Meet Our Missionaries - July 28th
With Jerusalem, the West Bank, and the surrounding areas continually in the news, St. Paul Lutheran Church welcomes ELCA Missionaries Reverend Jeff VonWald and Julie Rossate on Sunday, July 28th. Julie and Rev. Jeff serve as coordinator and associate coordinator of the Young Adults in Global Mission (YAGM) program in Jerusalem/West Bank in cooperation with the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Jordan and the Holy Land (ELCJHL).  Rev. Jeff and Julie will share news of their work in the Holy Land with their mission partner, the ELCJHL, led by Bishop Dr. Munib Younan.  Through its missionaries, companion churches, and partner agencies, the 9,638 congregations of the ELCA work every day to proclaim the love of God, an effort that could not be accomplished alone.

Julie has studied and worked in Egypt, Tunisia, and Morocco, cementing her love for the Arabic language and her respect for Islamic and multi-faith cultures. She received a B.A. in Religious Studies and Art History from Macalester College, St. Paul, MN, and a Masters of Theological Studies from Harvard Divinity School, Cambridge, MA.

Jeff received a B.A. in Philosophy from the State University of New York, Oswego, NY, and a Master of Divinity in Ministry Studies from Harvard Divinity School, Cambridge, MA. He was raised in the Pentecostal tradition, found his way to ordained ministry in the United Church of Christ, and is honored to be serving through the UCC's full-communion partnership with the ELCA.

All are welcome to join us for this time to learn about a land called holy, but one that is torn with violence, hatred and fear. Thanks in part to the dedicated and faithful support of the churches of the ELCA, God's spirit is maintaining a strong and vibrant global church, advocating for peace and justice.

Worship at 10am followed by an educational session 11:15 -noon.

Council Updates - July 3rd Edition

*Patty Dougherty has taken over as Worship Chair. Fred Orth and others will continue to actively support the worship planning, but Patty will serve as the chair and council representative for the remainder of the year.  Our thanks to Patty for this valuable service at this time.

*Pastor Ulmanis Visa Status:  The initial application was returned for two corrections.  We need a preliminary review from the Dept. of Labor, then will resubmit the application.  Best guess on a response is mid to late July.  We're hoping Pastor Ulmanis will be able to join us in late July or early August.

*Worship, Music and Christian Education committees will be meeting soon to plan our worship schedule for the fall.  We are planning to go to one service with a Christian Ed hour as our Sunday format.  Details to follow.

*Council will meet as needed in July and August to consider formation of a call committee, the contract for the Interim Pastor, the fall worship schedule, and other issues that arise as we go through this transition time.  Please keep Pastor Collier, our staff and leadership, and our whole congregation in your prayers.

Stewardship/Summer/Vacation Time
I had a conversation with the "Church" the other day about what he will be doing for vacation this summer. He said: "Vacation? What vacation?"  It turns out that the church keeps right on going all summer long !! Soooo... it would appear that we should keep in mind that during our own summer vacation time the church still needs our financial support. Let's all have a great summer and help the church have a great summer too. Thanks for your support.

Thrivent Members Did You Know????
thrivent
Eligible members, including eligible member leaders, who direct Choice Dollars online between July 1 and Oct. 31 will be designated an additional $25 Thrivent Choice Dollars

2.

Through Thrivent Choice, Thrivent Financial's member-advised charitable grant program, eligible members help support the causes and organizations they think are doing great work. Other reasons to direct online include:

  1. Going to the Thrivent Choice pages on Thrivent.com and directing often means that eligible members won't miss out on any special opportunities and initiatives (like this one). For example, during the Give Back to Schools initiative, when members recommend that Choice Dollars grant funds be distributed to Lutheran educational institutions, those educational institutions are entered into a drawing for a chance to receive one of ten $2,500 grants.
  2. Directing online means that members can review the Thrivent Choice catalog and see what new organizations have joined the program since they last visited or even nominate a new organization.

St. Paul is one of the organizations you can designate as a recipient.  Search for St. Paul Lutheran Church, 48236.  If you have any questions, please call Gretchen Archinal in the office.
