April 7 A Bible Study on Mark Presenters: K. Ward & J. Callewaert
Living the Word for Children and Youth
This Sunday the children and youth will discuss the Gospel lesson of Jesus appearing to Thomas in John 20:19-31. The children will learn that like Thomas, we doubt what we cannot see, and that through His Spirit, God gives us eyes of faith. The youth will consider the great blessings Jesus promises for those who believe though they do not see Him, and the impact of those blessings on their lives. The children meet in Sandrock Hall at 10:10 for the opening; High School and Middle School youth meet in their respective rooms meet upstairs.

| |
The Luther League will have a "Spring Kick-Off" meeting in the youth room on Saturday, April 6, beginning at 5:00 pm and ending at 7:00 pm. This will be a chance for ALL members of the Luther League (and their parents) to meet our new Youth/Family director: Len Cugliari. Pizza, pop, chips, etc will be provided for the kids. Initial discussions will focus on the direction of the Luther League, as well as other Youth/Family programs - bring your ideas! We will also discuss revamping the youth group room!

The direction of any Youth Group needs to start with you! Please RSVP via email so I can have plenty of pizza. Parents you are welcome to stay but are welcome to drop off and pick up your son/daughter. If you will be dropping off/picking up please let me know in advance via email.
My email address is: lcugliari@lsimichigan.com - my cell phone is (586) 630-2149. It is easier for me to respond to emails, but if you need to discuss something with me please feel free to call.

Worship Chairperson Needed
| |
We have a church council vacancy to fill the position of Chair of the Worship Committee; the term would be through the end of the year Our current Chair, Katherine Ward, will be relocating to Florida to care for her mother, and will not be able to continue in this position.
The position coordinates and plans the worship services with much assistance from the pastors, music staff and an active committee. As we consider moving to a single service and alternative worship formats and times, this is an important position on the Council at this time.
If that would be your interest and calling, and you would be able to serve in that position for the remainder of the year, please contact one of the pastors or Dave Upmeyer. Thank you.

TIP Needs Your Help | |
The success of Wayne State University's Foster Care and Higher Education Transition to Independence Program (TIP) would not be possible without the generous support from volunteers from the community. WSU is currently supporting 84 foster care youth in pursuit of their post-secondary education goals. We are actively recruiting assistance from the congregation and other members of the community to Create and Disseminate Care Packages to Foster Care Youth. Care packages will be provided to foster care youth during finals week this winter semester, which is the last week of April. This program provides foster care youth with a boost of energy to promote diligence and good study habits at a time when school is most stressful for students. Care packages include nonperishable food items, gift cards to local area restaurants and stores, personal hygiene items, and school supplies.
Students who come to campus from foster care often do not have the benefit of this type of informal support from family and friends. These periodic "pick me ups" reminds foster care alumni that someone is thinking about them and can help students avoid slipping up, giving up, and even dropping out of school. Critical Partners who have assisted with creating these care packages in the past include the Faith Based Coalition on Foster Care Youth, Big Family of Michigan, and the WSU community of faculty and staff.
Suggested Care Package Contents:
* A Note of Encouragement
* Laundry basket
* Towel
* Washcloths (2)
* Soap ( 4 bars)
* Toothbrush
* Toothpaste
* Shaving Cream
* Razors
* Comb
* Hair Products (culturally sensitive)
* Deodorant
* Pocket Tissues (4 packs)
* Feminine Hygiene Products
* Toilet Paper
* Non-Perishable Snacks
* School Supplies
* Laundry Detergent (50 fl oz)

Care packages are being collected through April 10, 2013 to ensure we can accurately plan. In-kind and cash donations are tax deductable

March Update
|
During the month of March we will be focusing on LSSM programs that deliver care for Persons with Disabilities and a community youth program called Neighborhood House.
Lutheran Social Services of Michigan manages 15 group homes for adults with developmental disabilities. Each home has three to 16 residents and 24-hour staffing. LSSM works to integrate their consumers into the larger community by encouraging choice and independence. The current need they have for persons with disabilities has to do with the cost of recreational activities. It is helpful for community reintegration for residents to get out to the movies, museums or community events.
If you would like to support the recreational fund for adults with disabilities in group homes, a purchase of movie gift cards, restaurant gift certificates, gas cards or monetary donations would be welcome. These can be dropped off to the church office in an envelope marked LSSM - Kevin Majeske, or you can contact Kevin at kmaje@lssm.org to send by mail or to send online order donations.
Lutheran Social Services of Michigan runs Neighborhood House in Saginaw to provide a safe haven for children in struggling urban neighborhoods. Neighborhood House offers educational and recreational activities for children and a hot dinner program for families.
The manager of Neighborhood House has started a program to provide personal hygiene items to the school children and young adults as most of them would not be able to afford these items. Making these items available to kids can make them feel like they fit in at school and help their self-image.
A current need for this branch of LSSM is personal hygiene items for the middle and high school students such as;
Toothbrushes
Tooth Paste
Bar soap
Body wash
Hair shampoo and conditioner
Razor blades: male and female
There will be a collection bin in the foyer for Neighborhood House.
Pray specifically for the family of the young man who was a victim of violence outside of the Neighborhood House earlier this month. Pray that law enforcement will find the perpetrator and that this will help youth feel safe when they return to the program. Pray for the staff of Neighborhood House to continue to be encouraged in their efforts at violence prevention. Pray for God's strength and patience for the staff and God's protection for the children that attend the after school programs. Please pray for the ministry of LSSM this month and for all the programs that serve disabled adults and at-risk teens. .
