Each Wednesday during Lent, our services will begin with a call to worship.  We will have candles placed on a crown of thorns.  Each Wednesday, a candle will be extinguished, leading up to the last candle, the Christ candle.

Our Lenten dramas are based on Luke 14:16 when Jesus told the parable of the "Banquet of the King."  The dramas focus on Christian worship.

March 17 A.E.D. Use

A few years ago, we saw a presentation on the use of the defibrillator.
This session is a refresher, intended to keep us abreast on how we may respond in an emergency with the use of the defibrillator.

Presenter: Becka Jenzen

Living the Word for Children and Youth

This week the children will study how a sinful woman lovingly anointed Jes us' feet by faith (Luke 7), and learn that by faith we grasp God's free mercy, receive forgiveness of sins, and respond with acts of love and praise.  The youth will study Mary washing Jesus' feet (John 12) to learn Jesus calls us to compassion, forgiveness and conversion-that is to new life!   The children meet in Sandrock Hall at 10:10 for the opening; High School and Middle School youth meet in their respective rooms meet upstairs.
Faith and Ale 2.0
faith and ale
On March 17, we will meet at the home of Marie and Mike Zeller.  Since it is St Patrick's Day, we thought it would be appropriate to explore the Celtic and Irish history, faith stories and customs.  This will be an interactive session with shared leadership by anyone who wishes to share with the group.  Personal family stories are especially welcomed.  Marie is preparing a simple meal with peasant soup and Irish soda bread; please RSVP to her so she knows how much food is needed.  There will be a free will offering to cover the meal and support the Pieces Be With You Quilt project for Freedom House.

Upcoming Milestones for children and youth

Welcome to the Lord's Table Milestone, March 23 & 24
At St Paul, children are welcome to prepare for Holy Communion beginning in 2nd grade.  This year's preparation workshop will be offered Saturday March 23 9-10:30, with the Milestone celebration and Holy Communion on Palm Sunday March 24 at 9 am.

Please contact the office if you would like your child to participate.
  Families are invited to prepare a scrapbook page celebrating the child's Baptism and Holy Communion to be displayed in the Narthex.  Materials are available in the elevator landing area on the lower level.

Stepping into the World Milestone May 19 at 9:00
graduation day
The date of this year's celebration and quilt sending service for High School graduates has been moved from June to May 19 at 9 am so that Pastor Harms may participate.   Families are asked to begin assembling photos for display and the presentation which will be shared in worship.  A coordinator is needed for this activity; familiarity with Power Point presentations is necessary.  Please contact Gretchen Archinal for more information.

Affirmation of Baptism Milestone May 19 at 11:15
Confirmation of all youth who have completed their catechism studies will be at 11:15 am on May 19.

Sping Celebration

St. Paul will be hosting a "Spring Celebration" at Gateshead Crossing on April 12th.  This is a great opportunity for us to partner with the LSSM operated senior housing facility.  There will be sing-a-long, craft project, and an ice cream sundae bar.  Volunteers are needed to help with the festivites.  A sign up sheet is on the WELCA bulletin board.

Please join us as we interact with our close neighbors.  All are welcome.

The Zimmann's in the Holy Land

Angela and Martin Zimmann, formally of the SEMI Synod were installed at Redeemer Sunday by Bishop Munib Younan of the ELCJHL. Also participating were Rev. Mark Brown of the Lutheran World Federation, Rev. Ibrahim Azar, Pastor of the Arabic-speaking congregation, and Propst Wolfgang Schmidt of the German-speaking congregation. Mary Mobley and Bev Netzloff from our congregation as well as members of Zion Lutheran, Ann Arbor were there as well.

On March 10th, 2013, Bishop Munib Younan installed Rev. Dr. Angela Zimmann and Rev. Dr. Martin Zimmann as pastors of the English Speaking congregation and Special Assistants to the Bishop.

Community Events
TIP Needs Your Help
The success of Wayne State University's Foster Care and Higher Education Transition to Independence Program (TIP) would not be possible without the generous support from volunteers from the community.    WSU is currently supporting 84 foster care youth in pursuit of their post-secondary education goals.  We are actively recruiting assistance from the congregation and other members of the community to Create and Disseminate Care Packages to Foster Care Youth.  Care packages will be provided to foster care youth during finals week this winter semester, which is the last week of April.  This program provides foster care youth with a boost of energy to promote diligence and good study habits at a time when school is most stressful for students. Care packages include nonperishable food items, gift cards to local area restaurants and stores, personal hygiene items, and school supplies.

Students who come to campus from foster care often do not have the benefit of this type of informal support from family and friends. These periodic "pick me ups" reminds foster care alumni  that someone is thinking about them and can help students avoid slipping up, giving up, and even dropping out of school. Critical Partners who have assisted with creating these care packages in the past include the Faith Based Coalition on Foster Care Youth, Big Family of Michigan, and the WSU community of faculty and staff.

Suggested Care Package Contents:
* A Note of Encouragement
* Laundry basket
* Towel
* Washcloths (2)
* Soap ( 4 bars)

* Feminine Hygiene Products
* Toilet Paper
* Non-Perishable Snacks

Danita can be reached at 313-576-6985 or at danita.echols@wayne.edu to schedule a drop off or pick up time.  Care packages are being collected through April 10, 2013 to ensure we can accurately plan.  In-kind and cash donations are tax deductable

LSSM Connection
March Update

During the month of March we will be focusing on LSSM programs that deliver care for Persons with Disabilities   and a community youth program called Neighborhood House.
Lutheran Social Services of Michigan manages 15 group homes for adults with developmental disabilities. Each home has three to 16 residents and 24-hour staffing.  LSSM works to integrate their consumers into the larger community by encouraging choice and independence. Please join us for the Adult Forum on March 10th when Kevin Majeske shares about the programs LSSM provides for persons with disabilities.

Lutheran Social Services of Michigan runs Neighborhood House in Saginaw to provide a safe haven for children in struggling urban neighborhoods. Neighborhood House offers educational and recreational activities for children and a hot dinner program for families.

The manager of Neighborhood House has started a program to provide personal hygiene items to the school children and young adults as most of them would not be able to afford these items. Making these items available to kids can make them feel like they fit in at school and help their self-image.

A current need for this branch of LSSM is personal hygiene items for the middle and high school students such as;

Toothbrushes
Tooth Paste
Bar soap
Body wash
Hair shampoo and conditioner
Razor blades: male and female

There will be a collection bin in the foyer for Neighborhood House.  Please pray for the ministry of LSSM this month and for all the programs that serve disabled adults and at-risk teens.
