Westfield Vocational Students Walk in Technicians' Boots
Dustin Mara (right) shows automotive technology student Cam W. (left) how to inspect wheels.
Westfield opened its doors, or rather hangars, to 11th grade students from the Westfield Vocational Technical High School to expose them to the aerospace industry. Six students toured the facility for about three hours on June 6, working alongside aircraft and avionics technicians as part of the Federal Aviation Administration's "Walk In My Boots" program.
"Allowing students to see the No. 1 corporate business aircraft in the industry shows them there are many sides of maintenance, and there are many career opportunities with Gulfstream," Dustin Mara, mid-cabin aircraft technician, said. While the majority of the students were studying automotive technology, the program introduced them to a different side of maintenance.
| Group shot of Westfield employees and Westfield Vocational High School Students who participated in "Walk In My Boots". |
"It gave them a hands-on experience of what it's like to walk in our shoes for a few hours. This I'm sure will prove valuable when it comes time for them to make career and learning choices in the future," said Robert Cresenzi, avionics and electrical technician. The tour not only focused on the maintenance side of aviation, but it also introduced students to representatives from area schools that offer Airframe and Powerplant training.
"A program similar to this is why I am currently involved in aviation maintenance," Mara said. "This project should be allowed to continue in the future." "I wish this program was offered to me 18 years ago," Mike Duris, hawker team lead, said, "It would be nice to spend a little more time with these kids during the work day. I feel three hours was just not enough time to really get them involved, but it definitely got them introduced to the business." Gulfstream will continue the program with Westfield Vocational Technical High School to coordinate two job shadow days in the coming year. Westfield Vocational Technical High School director of student services, Rob Ollari, said, "It was a great opportunity for the students to see what happens in the work environment."

Noble Hospital Recognizes Arbors Resident
Arbors Resident Goes the "Extra Mile" for
Breast Cancer Research and in Life
|
Harvey, 94 year old resident of The Arbors
|
The Arbors at Westfield's residents showed their support for breast cancer research and Noble Hospital's Comprehensive Breast Program in a walk around the front greens of the Arbors. While most residents finished three laps, one resident, Harvey (age 94), went the "extra mile" and finished an amazing five laps.
"On the third lap our activity director made him drink some water and he just kept going," said Sondra Jones, Marketing Director at the Arbors.
When asked why he was motivated to put in such a performance, he replied that it is important to keep moving. Harvey said that if he sits too long it's "hard to get up", so he just keeps on going. This is true in a literal sense, but it is also a philosophy that has kept him on the move his entire life. As a younger man, Harvey travelled to Hawaii four times and said that his favorite destination spot is New Zealand.
Harvey said the key to staying healthy at 94 is to keep on moving. He stays active everyday with his fellow Arbors residents by participating in a range of exercise classes offered by The Arbors. Asked the secret of his longevity, Harvey said you must "take everything in moderation. If somebody offers you three beers you drink only two. If you have three shirts you give one away."

Jeffrey Bibeau Recognized for Toxics Use Reduction Leadership
Jeffrey Bibeau, a Registered Environmental Manager (REM) and environmental compliance group leader at Tighe & Bond, received two recognition awards at the Toxics Use Reduction Institute's 2013 Champions of Toxics Use Reduction (TUR) awards ceremony held on June 12th at the Massachusetts State House in Boston. Established by the Massachusetts Toxics Use Reduction Act (TURA) of 1989, the Toxics Use Reduction Institute provides resources and tools to help make the Commonwealth a safer and more sustainable place to live and work. These awards recognize outstanding leaders who have reduced toxic chemical use in Massachusetts through innovation and outreach.
Bibeau, a certified TUR planner, is the first individual to receive the TUR Planner Champion Award from the Toxics Use Reduction Institute (TURI) located at the University of Massachusetts, Lowell. TURI recognized him for demonstrating environmental leadership in TUR by educating future TUR planners, improving the TUR process, and demonstrating the highest standards of excellence in TUR planning. Commissioner of the Department of Environmental Protection, Kenneth Kimmell, and Secretary of Energy and Environmental Affairs, Richard K. Sullivan, Jr., attended the ceremony to congratulate Bibeau and the other award recipients on their achievements. Also in attendance were Senator Marc R. Pacheco and Representative Anne M. Gobi, co-chairs of the Joint Committee on Environment, Natural Resources and Agriculture.
In addition, Senator Michael Knapik presented Bibeau with an official citation for his efforts in making the Commonwealth a safer place to live and work.
"We are very proud that Jeff Bibeau is the first TUR Planner in Massachusetts to receive this award," says Tighe & Bond President, David Pinsky. "An employee at our firm since 1988, Jeff has been at the forefront of making toxics use reduction a reality in Massachusetts for more than 20 years," he adds.
As a certified TUR Planner, Bibeau has been an invaluable resource in training new TUR Planners - both as an instructor in the intensive TUR Planner training course, and as a contributor to TURI's continuing education conferences. He has delivered numerous environmental compliance presentations throughout the country, most recently for the National Registry of Environmental Professionals on EPA Boiler Emissions Standards in Las Vegas, Nevada.
He also has prepared and certified hundreds of TUR plans for industries as diverse as metal finishing, plastics manufacturing, flexographic printing, paperboard manufacturing, power plants, wire and cable manufacturing, and circuit board manufacturing. During his 30 years of professional experience, Bibeau has managed many projects associated with comprehensive environmental audits, air emissions permitting/modeling, waste site remediation, hazardous waste elimination, wastewater and water permitting, and risk management planning.
A resident of Holyoke, Bibeau holds a bachelor of science in civil engineering from the University of Massachusetts. He is also a member of the American Society of Civil Engineers, the National Association of Metal Finishers, Printing Industries of New England, the Western Massachusetts Society of Engineers, and the Wood Products Manufacturing Association.
