May 2013

Dear  ,

I want to personally thank Denise Begley and Anja Paier for co-chairing our very successful Chamber Golf Tournament this year. In addition, I want to acknowledge our Events Committee and all the volunteers who worked so hard on this event.  We had 136 registered golfers this year, and even though the weather was on the chilly side, we had a great time! Also, I want to thank Peter Clark and his staff at the Ranch for making it an effortless tournament; especially for me, as I am not a golfer. Here are some photos to enjoy:

Also in May, our WestNet was hosted by Amelia Park Children's Museum and sponsored by the YMCA.  Please enjoy the pictures:

Karen Rubin, Executive Director, AMCM

Andrea Allard, CEO, YMCA

Heather White, Director of Development, CityStage & Symphony Hall

John Keilch, Head Farmer, Yellow Stonehouse Farm

In addition to the above two events, we also heard from Mayor Knapik at the May Coffee Hour hosted by Holiday Express Inn. The Mayor's updates are further down in the newsletter, but here are some more pictures:

Noble Hospital Earns an "A" in Patient Safety by

Hospital Safety Score

Noble Hospital was recognized with an "A" Hospital Safety Score by The Leapfrog Group, an independent national nonprofit run by employers and other large purchasers of health benefits. The A score was awarded in the latest update to the Hospital Safety ScoreSM, the A, B, C, D or F scores assigned to U.S. hospitals based on preventable medical errors, injuries accidents, and infections. The Hospital Safety Score was compiled under the guidance of the nation's leading experts on patient safety. The first and only hospital safety rating to be peer-reviewed in the Journal of Patient Safety (April 2013), Hospital Safety Score is designed to give the public information they can use to protect themselves and their families.

"Noble Hospital is very proud of our patient safety record. It reflects a commitment to care that is shared by everyone," said Allison Gearing-Kalill, Vice President of Marketing. "This represents our dedication to the community and to providing the best patient care possible."

"Earning an 'A' on the Hospital Safety Score demonstrates that this hospital has exhibited excellence in our national database of patient safety measures," said Leah Binder, President and CEO of The Leapfrog Group. "I'd like to congratulate Noble Hospital for your achievements and encourage you to continue to put a priority on the safety of your patients."

To see Noble Hospital's scores as they compare nationally and locally, visit the Hospital Safety Score website at www.hospitalsafetyscore.org, which provides information on how the public can protect themselves and loved ones during a hospital stay. Local hospitals' scores are also available on the free mobile app, available at www.hospitalsafetyscore.org.

Calculated under the guidance of The Leapfrog Group's eight-member Blue Ribbon Expert Panel, the Hospital Safety Score uses 26 measures of publicly available hospital safety data to produce a single score representing a hospital's overall capacity to keep patients safe from infections, injuries, and medical and medication errors. The panel includes: John Birkmeyer (University of Michigan), Ashish Jha (Harvard University), Arnold Millstein (Stanford University), Peter Pronovost (Johns Hopkins University), Patrick Romano (University of California, Davis), Sara Singer (Harvard University), Tim Vogus (Vanderbilt University), and Robert Wachter (University of California, San Francisco).

Noble Hospital Celebrates National Hospital Week

Noble Hospital will celebrate National Hospital Week, May 13th through 17th, 2013, with themes and special events. Employees will wear themed clothing (Boston, Noble, and community/town) to show their spirit. Tuesday includes an ice cream social. On Wednesday, employees with 5 to 35 years of service will be honored at a luncheon. A vendor fair will be held on Thursday. Friday will end the week with an employee picnic and obstacle course on the lawn. Throughout the week, employees will be donating $5 to the One Fund Boston for the opportunity to wear jeans to work, raising money for a great cause.

National Hospital Day was originally conceived by a Chicago magazine editor as a public healthcare event that encouraged the public to trust in the city's hospitals after the Spanish Flu outbreak of 1918, which killed more than 600,000 Americans. The event expanded to an entire week in 1953, and today every state celebrates National Hospital Week, which is sponsored by the American Hospital Association. This annual celebration serves as a reminder that hospitals are foundations of the communities that built them and nurture them, and that hospitals serve people in every community from all walks of life.

Blood Pressure Screenings

Noble Hospital is now offering free monthly blood pressure screenings. This opportunity for the public to have their blood pressures checked is being offered by the Building Bridges Committee, a group of Noble Hospital nurses who volunteer in the greater Westfield community to educate the public about healthcare and disease prevention.

Screenings will be held on the first Wednesday of the month from 9:00 to 10:00 am downstairs in the Cardiology Department. Please enter through the Hospital's main entrance and follow the signs to Cardiology. This is a first-come, first-served screening clinic and there is no need to preregister. If you have any questions, please contact the Community Development Office at info@noblehealth.org or 413-568-2811 x5520.

Noble Hospital Makes Donation to St. Mary's Schools

St. Mary's Schools are thrilled to accept a very generous donation of two portable Automated External Defibrillator (AED) machines from Noble Hospital. Portable AED machines provide life saving medical attention to someone suffering from cardiac arrest. In an effort to increase the safety and security of its students and staff, St. Mary's Schools will now carry portable AED machines to athletic events and off campus activities. From left to right: Allison Gearing-Kalill, VP of Community Development of Noble Hospital, Michael Hourihan, Dean of Students and Director of Guidance at St. Mary's High School, Marcia Pelli, Nurse at St. Mary's Schools, Ron Bryant, President and CEO of Noble Hospital, Fr. Brian McGrath, Pastor of St. Mary's Parish, and Sr. Christine Lavoie, Principal of St. Mary's Elementary School (Kate Phelon, Executive Director, Greater Westfield Chamber of Commerce, absent from picture).

Tighe & Bond's Ranking As One Of The Nation's Top Design
Firms Gains Leverage

Last month, the Engineering News-Record (ENR) once again ranked Tighe & Bond among the top 500 design firms in the nation, as it has for more than 10 consecutive years.  ENR ranks companies on the previous year's gross revenue for providing design services to domestic and international markets.  This year marked a substantial bump for the firm as it claimed the 250 spot in ENR's 2013 report, which exceeds last year's 272 ranking, and reflects the firm's 2012 annual gross revenue of $41 million.

"Substantial growth across nearly all of our markets, and an extension of our geographic reach, drove last year's record revenue," comments David Pinsky, president of Tighe & Bond.  "We also significantly expanded our staff to provide existing and new clients with increasingly responsive and integrated services.  All of this is backed by our ongoing commitment to deliver the highest quality services to our clients on time and within budget."
