March 2013

Dear  ,

First, I want to tell all of you about a two-day summit I attended in Turners Falls on March 22 and 23rd.  It was called the Creative Economy Summit 4. This year's summit focused on how to connect the arts, businesses, and public sector that can have a profound effect on economic development. The Creative Economy consists of non-profit organizations, for profit businesses, creative individuals, and communities.  Some of the key points that we took away from the summit include (but certainly not limited to!):

  • Cultural District designation
  • Commercial Homesteading
  • The role of city government
  • Cultural Revitalization
  • Fostering strong relationships that plan for the future
  • Numerous ideas for events that will draw people to our city
  • Funding sources

We had an entourage of eight people from Westfield and during and after the summit, our excitement was clearly evident amongst ourselves and with the other attendees. We cannot wait to share our enthusiasm with the businesses, residents, and local government officials in the City of Westfield. So if you hear the words, Creative Economy, please know that your business may very well be part of it, and that the Chamber is committed to playing a role in developing our cultural assets which will have a direct and indirect impact on our local economy.

Second, I want to point out a new section in our enewsletter.  We will now be adding events, workshops, and general information that will pertain to international trade. The new heading is "International Trade Information." We hope this section will assist our members who are manufacturers, distributors, or anyone who wishes to start or increase their international trade.

Since our last enewsletter, we had our March WestNet Connection and St. Patrick's Day Breakfast. Please enjoy some photos from both events!

City of Westfield, MA Launches New Website

Redesigned Site Offers New Technologies, Features and Services to Residents and Visitors

The City of Westfield, MA is pleased to officially announce the launch its new website, www.cityofwestfield.org.  Designed by the government website experts at CivicPlus, the new site reflects the personality of the City of Westfield while incorporating a host of new and improved features and tools designed to help residents & visitors quickly locate the information and services they need.

Mayor Daniel M. Knapik states "The City's new web site reflects the direction we are taking for the future of Westfield.  We have faith in our community to engage in what's going on in the City.   Reporting, notifying, and contact tools are all new features that allow for that engagement and dialogue to happen."

The new homepage is easy to navigate and breaks down information for residents, businesses and visitors. A search feature takes citizens directly to specific information while interactive online forms currently under development will allow citizens to complete City business, including online employment application submissions. Reporting a concern or requesting information from the City of Westfield also is easier than ever. Visitors simply click the Report a Concern button on the left of every page to access an online submissions listing, which will automatically enter work requests to respective departments.  A new feature, Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ), has been added to further assist citizens with inquiries.  There is also an application available for iPhones, Citizen Request Tracker, which allows requests to be entered with a photo attachment.

"There are many new features of the website, including social media and citizen interaction that we are continuing to develop.  The Technology Center team has been interacting with many departments within the City to streamline their updates to the website.  We are excited about this new website and hope that it provides the citizens with greater access to the City," said Information Technology Manager, Lenore Bernashe.  "Online payments have been set up to allow for debit/credit card payment of real estate, personal property, motor vehicle excise, and combined utility bills."

In addition to emergency information, a new "Notify Me" option on the homepage allows visitors to sign up to receive alerts from specific departments about special events, bids, public meetings, job opportunities and a variety of other City of Westfield activities. Citizens may choose to be notified via email or mobile phone text message.

Other features and functionality of the new City of Westfield website include clickable interactive maps and a centralized location to store and view meeting agendas and minutes.  Videos of City Council, School Committee, Planning Board, and other city programming and special events will continue to be available for viewing on demand.

"Modernizing our technology tools, online bill pay, increased and enhanced use of electronic communication and social media were and still are major goals of mine when I took office in 2010.  I am pleased to say, that we have finally arrived and will continue to enhance the website to promote additional interaction opportunities for our citizens." Said Knapik.

Noble Hospital Main Laboratory Receives Accreditation from College of American Pathologists

The Noble Hospital Main Laboratory was recently awarded accreditation from the College of American Pathologists as a result of an on-site inspection as part of the CAP's Accreditation Programs.

The Noble Hospital Main Laboratory's director, Krystyna Sikorska, MD, was advised of this national recognition and congratulated for the excellence of the services being provided. Noble Hospital's Main Laboratory is one of more than 7,000 CAP-accredited facilities worldwide.

The U.S. Federal Government recognizes the CAP Laboratory Accreditation Program, begun in the early 1960s, as being equal-to or more-stringent-than the government's own inspection program.

During the CAP accreditation process, designed to ensure the highest standard of care for all laboratory patients, inspectors examine the laboratory's records and quality control of procedures for the preceding two years. CAP inspectors also examine laboratory staff qualifications, equipment, facilities, safety program and record, and overall management.

Armbrook Villages Announces April 1st Opening

Mayor Knapik and Others Attend
Pre-Opening Presentation

Armbrook Village, the Pioneer Valley's newest senior living community, hosted Westfield Mayor Daniel Knapik and other local community guests at a pre-opening presentation this past Friday. Armbrook Village Executive Director Beth Cardillo also formally announced the community's April 1, 2013 opening date.

Those in attendance got to see several model apartments including studio, one bedroom and two bedroom homes. Guests were also taken on a hard-hat tour of the unfinished building. The tour featured a presentation of the community's extensive amenities which include award-winning healthy cuisine in the Grill Room restaurant, group exercise classes and an on-site fitness center, spa and hairdressing services, aCreative Arts and Computer Center and Putting Green. Ms. Cardillo, who conducted the tour along with developer Michael McCarthy, highlighted the fact all of these features and more are available to residents as part of their monthly fee and that Armbrook Village, unlike many other similar communities in the area, does not require a buy-in. It's a straight monthly rental community.

The new senior community will be managed by Massachusetts-based Senior Living Residences, a well- known name in the senior living industry and pioneers in launching Assisted Living in Massachusetts. With Senior Living Residence's expertise and a highly experienced local management team headed by Cardillo, Armbrook Village will feature independent senior apartments with concierge services, service-enriched assisted living, and a state-of-the-art Compass Memory Support Neighborhood™, affiliated with Boston University's School of Medicine's Alzheimer's Disease Center, featuring research-based treatment for those with memory loss.

Mayor Daniel Knapik, who has supported the Armbrook Village project over a now five-year planning, permitting and construction phase, said he is excited to see the project come to fruition. "Armbrook Village will add vitality to Westfield and our surrounding communities - not just for our seniors, but for other age groups in our community and our local businesses. The over 120 residents of Armbrook Village will make use of area amenities such as the YMCA, Noble Hospital, our shopping centers, grocery stores and restaurants. And they will be involved in the fabric of our community through volunteering and other social and cultural pursuits."

He added, "Armbrook Village will add 75 part-time and full-time permanent jobs in Westfield - music to my ears in an economy that is still recovering. This community serves as one of the major accomplishments of our city's revitalization effort."

"I read an article the other day. The first baby boomer turned 65 years old on January 1, right? So in the city of Westfield, we have 9,000 residents over age 65. It's clear by all the studies that have been done; we don't have enough locations and options for senior living throughout the region, so we are very happy to be home to this community."

Cardillo also announced the new senior community's affiliations with local groups and organizations including Noble Hospital, Noble VNA, and the YMCA of Greater Westfield. Another highlight from the morning's presentation was the announcement of Alzheimer's Association approved support group meetings for Westfield area families to be led by Compass Program Director, Brenda Lopes.

Allison Gearing-Kalill, Vice President of Community Development at Noble Hospital, was present on the tour. "Noble Hospital is very excited to have the opportunity to collaborate with Armbrook Village to provide professional on-site clinical services to the residents. This State-of-the-Art senior residence offers elegant accommodations, programs, and amenities, in a serene secure environment. Residents of Westfield are very fortunate to have Armbrook as a member of our community."
