Recall Testing for Permit Discount

On Saturday, November 2nd we will host recall tests from 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at Cheyenne Park. Passing a recall test qualifies your dog for a discount of $5 from its annual permit fee for life. Although not required, it is useful for our volunteers to know in advance if you're planning to attend: email info@k9cola.org. This will be our last recall test session until early spring 2014.

Could your dog pass? The basic idea behind recall testing is that your dog comes when called. Why do we do it? Safety. If an unpleasant incident happens at the dog park, owners calling their dogs limits the number of dogs involved in the incident and its "energy level."

On testing day you will need to check in at the table in the main yard. Tell them your name and your dog's name. The volunteer will give you a number letting you know how far down you are on the list. When the tester calls your number, let her know who you are and describe which dog is yours. When she sees the dog is sufficiently distracted she will ask you to call your dog. If your dog comes you pass.
This test takes place off-leash in the main yard.

Worried that your dog won't get far enough away from you to try calling? No need to be concerned on this count: we have volunteers to help lead your dog away from you so you can call it back. Still have questions about the test or how it works? Email info@k9cola.org.

Volunteer: Your Dog Will Love You For It
There are always creative ways to get involved with the dog parks. We welcome your ideas, or if you'd just like to help -- ask, and we'll suggest some ways!

Helping Paws

Did you know that over 1,000 dogs use Cedar Rapids' two off-leash parks? Although both are City of Cedar Rapids parks, they are supported by donations from people like you!

Donations of time and money to K9COLA (Citizens for Off-Leash Areas) help with improvements at both parks. What's more, even though 1,000 dogs and their people use the parks, K9COLA is comprised of fewer than 20 volunteers donating their time for everyone's enjoyment.

My kids would tell me "that's not fair," and I would say "Then let's do something about it!" So that's what I'm telling you, too. By volunteering as little as one or two hours a month, you can make the off-leash dog parks better!

Please email info@k9cola.org or our volunteer coordinator Jill (volunteer@k9cola.org) to find out how we can use your talents. We have board elections coming up in November and some empty spots to fill, so the sooner you get involved the more fun you'll have!

An Easy Way to Help

Saturday, November 2nd is Clean Up Day at Cheyenne Park, from 11:00 a.m to 2:00 p.m.

We will be doing some work to tidy up the park for winter and remove items that were damaged in flooding. We encourage you to stop out, or better yet, let us know you are coming by emailing volunteer@k9cola.org. We will need all the help we can get, and many hands make light work.

We will be holding recall testing that day; see accompanying article for details.

Thanks very much in advance for any time you're willing to donate that day! We really appreciate the help.
Elections

K9COLA holds its board elections in November every year. Positions available this year include
treasurer and
fundraising coordinator; it's important to the continued success of K9COLA that we have a full complement of board members. If either of these positions sounds like something in which you'd be interested, you can review the position descriptions at our website, or email info@k9cola.org with any questions about the best ways to get involved.
Peanut Butter Boomer Treats
2 cups whole wheat flour
½ cup cornmeal
1 cup peanut butter
2 Tbsp. olive oil
Heat your oven to 350° F.

Mix the ingredients and roll out the dough. Use cookie cutters, or press the dough into a cookie sheet and use a knife to cut into small bite-sized squares before baking.

Bake for 15 minutes on the top shelf of the oven.

Check the treats, and then bake for 15 more minutes. Cook until the treats are hard.

Check again; they should be done. Remove pan from oven and let cool for 45 minutes before removing the treats.

Keep these treats in the fridge; they are perishable.
We are grateful for your interest in our dog parks, and look forward to seeing you and your dogs at the parks!

Sincerely,
