Park Flood Threat
As of Tuesday evening, the National Weather Service is predicting a Thursday crest of 15.0 to 15.5 feet on the Cedar River at Cedar Rapids. This flood looks to be similar to the one we experienced in April 2008. (This was not the big one, which was in June of that year.) K9COLA collected data from that flood; it provides an idea of what damage may be done to Cheyenne Dog Park at this time. Here is what happened, foot by foot, as the river rose.
Flood stage is 12 ft. The river was not yet in the park.
13 ft. The river was entering the park at low points in the main and small dog yards.
14 ft. The river level was rising in the main and small yards, getting close to the parking lot.
15 ft. The river level was rising in the main and small yards and entering the parking lot area and entry area.
16 ft. The parking lot, entry area, alley area, main and small yards were covered, and water was entering the shed and training yard.
17 ft. Three feet of water in the entry area, with the main, small, and training yards covered. Cedar Bend Lane was covered.
You can see a map showing that the park would be almost entirely underwater if the river level rises to 18 ft. (The park is located right below the bend where the faint legend reads "Cheyenne City Park," not where it says "Cheyenne City Park Off Leash Area.")

It goes without saying that we will need volunteers to help clean up the park after the flood is over. Write to [email protected].
