What to Do...

Volunteering with K9COLA can be rewarding and fun! We need the most volunteers (dozens) at our annual K9Splash! dog swim, which takes place in August. In addition, our valued volunteers (working as often as they like) perform important services such as emptying the trash cans in the parks, helping staff information tables at public events, and baking dog treats for sale to help raise money to improve the dog parks. Note that volunteering will become especially crucial when the new park opens this spring or summer!

Besides time, you can donate money. K9COLA is a not-for-profit 501(c)3 organization, so any cash donation is tax-deductible. As an all-volunteer group, K9COLA has practically no organizational expenses, so a large proportion of its income goes to help support the two dog parks. Examples of what we have purchased for the parks include the trees, benches, and agility and play equipment. We also have built storage sheds and are planning to construct a gathering area for events at K9 Acres park.

You can also participate in fun events like SaPaDaPaSo, the annual Cedar Rapids St. Patrick's Day parade, marching with others and their dogs as thousands look on.

Remember your dog needs regular off-leash exercise all year round. To help make this possible, Cheyenne Park is open 365 days a year. Probably you don't want to go during a blizzard, but there are many good days in winter to enjoy the crisp fresh air. And think how much the dogs enjoy the snow!

What a Good Dog

On a recent dark, chilly fall evening, a three year old child wandered out of his home unnoticed by his parents. His departure was, however, observed by the family dog, a large neutered  male Pit Bull, who took it upon himself to follow the little boy and stay close by his side. They were a good distance from home before they were seen by some passers-by who stopped to help. The child was unable to tell them where he lived or give them any other information so deputies were summoned. The dog stayed by the child's side the entire time, friendly but watchful. Read More

The Value of Microchipping

A microchip is a small electronic identification device permanently inserted under your dog's skin. The tag is about the size of a grain of rice. If the dog is lost, officials can read the tag, identify the owner, and make sure they are reunited. The cost is about $35, often less on special occasions (such as at K9Splash!).

You can have this done for your dog at any number of local providers.

We appreciate your continued interest in the Cedar Rapids metro area's off-leash parks, and we'll look forward to seeing you at the park!

Sincerely,
K9COLA Board of Directors
