              March 2014
Chemistry Ambassadors at the Cape & Islands Council of the Boy Scouts of America Wicked Cool Science Cafe during National Chemistry Week 2013

Last Thursday was an exciting night: In his role as Public Relations Chair of the Northeastern Section of the American Chemical Society, Jack Driscoll introduced 2013 Nobel Laureate, Martin Karplus, Professor Emeritus,  Harvard University, Department of Chemistry and Chemical Biology, Guest Lecturer at the March 6, 2014 Meeting of the Northeastern Section of the American Chemical Society (NESACS) Monthly Meeting in Cambridge, MA.
This is the first talk that Professor Karplus has delivered since his Nobel Laureate address last year in Sweden.
Here is the write-up
L to R: Martin Karplus, Joan Driscoll and Jack Driscoll
by Jack that was published in the March Issue of The Nucleus, the monthly NESACS newsletter.

Jack applied for and was granted an ACS Salutes to Excellence that he presented to Martin after his dinner lecture. Jack said, as he presented the award to Martin, "Well it's not a Nobel Prize but it's the best we can do". Martin graciously accepted his ACS/NESACS salute to excellence. He also expressed interest in guest lecturing for NESACS in the near future. This was a truly delightful evening for those in attendance, with a hundred people at the social hour followed by dinner and an additional fifty came in for the lecture only.

STEM Journey: Space Lab to Zero G~Experience the Possibilities! is a K-14 event that Jack and I have been working on since last summer with the Cape & Islands Council of the Boy Scouts of America and Cape Cod Community College. We've got two keynote addresses by astronauts, career talks by local scientists, an inflatable planetarium and an interactive science cafe
for the K-8 attendees and their families. There will be a Chemistry Merritt Badge for participating Boy Scouts which will be led by our friend and NESACS member, Paul Reibach. We are hoping that this stand-alone event is well attended and well received in our community. If you are in the area and want to pitch in, please contact me. If you want to attend, I hope you'll
join us. See here for the complete event information.
