Green Schools Quest: School Applications due September 16th!

WHERE WE LEARN MATTERS! Apply now to implement creative & effective sustainability practices in your school!
 
USGBC - Missouri Gateway Chapter is challenging public and private schools in our territory
to devise and implement the most creative, effective and no or low cost sustainable practices for their schools.
Participating schools are asked to form a Green Team, which may be a single classroom, a grade level, an entire school or a student club.

 

To assist the schools, a USGBC-MGC Green Mentor will be assigned to each school Green Team to help with project ideas, implementation, documentation, and resources. School Green Teams and their mentors will work together throughout the 2013-2014 school year to engage in sustainability projects fitting the schools' unique needs and resources. Awards and trophies will be presented to three participants in each category: elementary school, middle school, and high school.

USGBC-Missouri Gateway Chapter photo contest!

Have photos of green buildings or sustainable practices to share? Enter the Chapter's second photo contest- this time open to ALL residents of the Chapter territory!
    

We're looking for photos that celebrate the transformation of the built environment into a more environmentally friendly, prosperous, and healthy place to live, work, and learn.  

 

Submissions are due on October 1st, 2013 and winners will be announced on October 8th, 2013 at the Chapter program.

 

PRIZES  

  • FIRST PLACE: Complimentary one year Chapter membership & a canvas print of the winning photo donated by Schiller's Camera and Video!

Green Shadow Program seeks Mentors & Students!   

Are you a green professional looking to give back?
A student interested in green building or sustainability?

Developed by our Higher Education Committee, this program exposes students to green jobs within our Chapter territory through a one-day job shadow of local business people.
We are looking for Mentors and Shadows to participate!

 

 

Mentors must be active USGBC-Missouri Gateway Chapter members. Complete the mentor application to participate!

 

Shadows must be enrolled in a local college or university. Complete the student application to participate!

The USGBC-Missouri Gateway Chapter will have booths at three upcoming events. We're looking for volunteers to act as ambassadors for Green Building and the Chapter!

The SMACNA St. Louis Products Trade Show gathers local consulting engineers, architects, area sheet metal contractors, mechanical contractors, industrial users, and code officials from throughout the region! Volunteers will receive free admission to the event.

The Green Product & Services Expo
will showcase green products and services. The St. Louis Regional Council is hosting this Expo as part of their Green Business Challenge Program.

The Green Homes & Great Health Festival,
organized by the EarthWays Center of the Missouri Botanical Garden, celebrates sustainable living and offers attendees the opportunity to explore ways to maintain healthy lifestyles and a healthy planet! Volunteers will enjoy free admission to the Missouri Botanical Garden and the festival.
When: September 28th, 2013
Volunteer Shifts are 8:30 -11:00 am, 11:00 am-1:30 pm, and 1:30 -4:30 pm

Green Apple Day of Service 


  
null The Green Apple Day of Service, which will take place on Saturday, Sept. 28, 2013, gives parents, teachers, students, companies and local organizations the opportunity to transform all schools into healthy, safe and productive learning environments through local service projects. Be sure to check out project ideas, read last year's highlights and register your 2013 project today!

 

A number of projects have already been registered in the St. Louis area. Check out the map here, and see if you can find one in your zip code!

 

USGBC-MGC is celebrating Green Apple Day of Service through the Green Schools Quest (school applications are open until September 16th!) and at our booth at the Green Homes Great Health Festival. Please help spread the word to teachers, students and parents in your community!
  

Energy Efficient Housing Contest- Win a Vacant Lot or Free Building!

The St. Louis Energy Efficiency Housing Contest gives participants the change to design new infill housing or the renovation of an existing property. Winners will receive a free vacant lot, free building for gut rehab, or a cash award from a sponsoring government!

Teams can choose to enter in the Design-Build category, or the Design-only category.

The Design-Build Category
is accepting proposals from complete development teams.
Proposals must include adequate assurances that the project can be completed and built in 2014. Depending on the contest site that participants choose to address, winners will receive a free vacant lot or free building for gut rehab.

The Design-Only Category will include proposals from teams or individuals that do not intend to construct the design, even if selected for an award. Winners will not receive awards of real estate, but will be eligible to receive a $1,000 cash prize. Sub-categories include non-students, students, Living Building Challenge (Full Challenge, Petal Recognition, or Net Zero Energy), and Built Housing completed since November 1, 2011.

Save the Date- "Dead or Alive" Historical Architecture Tour  

 
The Construction Specifications Institute (CSI) is offering a  "Dead or Alive" Historical Architecture tour. Tours will begin at the The Engineers Club of St. Louis (4359 Lindell Blvd, 63108). The group will travel by bus to visit 4 historic churches, the "Holy Corners", and Bellefontaine Cemetery. Space is limited- so register early!
