Monumental Victories Reveal Two Tiers of Equality in America

No DOMA In recent years, California's Proposition 8 and the discriminatory Defense of Marriage Act became symbols of anti-LGBT discrimination around the country and around the world. Today, both have crumbled.

In a watershed moment in the fight for equality, the United States Supreme Court ruled to return marriage equality to California and to strike down DOMA. The court ruled in the Prop 8 case on procedural grounds, not reaching a decision on the merits of Prop 8 or the broader question of whether the Constitution guarantees the fundamental right to marry the person you love.

RECENT POST-DOMA ANNOUNCEMENTS:

1. Same-sex married couples to get federal tax recognition regardless of state! Click here to read more!

2. Military Same-Sex Spouses Eligible for benefits starting September 3, 2013. Click here to read more!

However, after DOMA, gay couples still would not receive many federal benefits

The Supreme Court's Windsor v. United States decision, which ruled a key part of the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) "unconstitutional," was celebrated across the country by the gay-rights community, but gay-rights advocates warn that same-sex couples may not be eligible for all federal marriage benefits.

Dallas Business Journal Honors Lorie as a Top Woman in Business

The Dallas Business Journal (DBJ) honored Lorie L. Burch, a Dallas estate planning attorney, one of the top women in business along with 25 other honorees. Each year, the DBJ honors top female executives and entrepreneurs for their achievements in business.

Lorie Burch is the owner and attorney of the Law Office of Lorie L. Burch, PC in Dallas, Texas, which focuses on estate planning, including wills, trusts, powers of attorney, and probate. Lorie has a special emphasis on estate planning needs of the LGBT (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, or Transgender), and became an LGBT Certified Business earlier this year. "I pursued a law career that would allow me to help others who have rights the law does not currently provide" Lorie says. "I have also discovered how truly fulfilling it is to help all families and individuals have peace of mind and to guide them during a very difficult time."

Lorie recognizes the importance of giving back to the community having held a number of leadership roles with organizations dedicated to creating equality for the LGBT community as well as assisting women in business. Specifically she has been on the Board (including Chairwoman) of the North Texas GLBT Chamber of Commerce, as well as Co-Chair of the DFW Steering Committee of the Human Rights Campaign. Currently she is the National Vice President for the Board of Directors of the American Business Women's Association, and hopes to be elected National President later this year.

"When I first started my law practice, I had no idea whether I could build a business or be a leader in the community" Burch says. Asked what advice she would give to young women starting their careers in her industry, she responded, "My advice is to remember that fear and faith cannot coexist. Have faith and confidence that you are serving the right purpose, and leave worries to a higher power." Incorporated in 2008, she opened her own law practice in 2004, and reports that starting her own business has been the most rewarding professional experience, both as an attorney and business owner.
