Estate Tax Changes
So many clients have been wondering how the changes to the estate tax affect their estate. The good news is that Congress' last minute action kept the estate tax exemption at $5 million per person. Keep in mind, while this is a very high amount, your life insurance and retirement payouts are included in calculating the tax. This won't necessitate any changes to most of my clients' plans, but it's never a bad idea to review your current Will or Trust to see if it still fits your needs. Feel free to contact our office for a complimentary review of your estate plan.

New Year's Resolution Time!
An important resolution that should be on the list this year is to have your estate planning documents created or updated.
There are many types of documents that exist which help you customize both present and future plans. Knowing the proper planning is in order will give you and your loved ones peace of mind in the event something should happen.

Ask Matthew!

Dear Matthew: My wife and I have two children, Sophie (age 14) and McKenzie (age 11). We feel like we should at least have our Wills made in case something happens to both of us. At the same time, we want to keep our expenses under control. What are your thoughts?
-Sincerely, Parents of Two
Dear Parents: We completely understand wanting to keep expenditures under control.
We have different packages available to fit almost any budget. While most everyone should have a Will, it is vital for parents of minors to have Wills prepared! When you weigh having an affordable Will prepared versus having a Court appoint a Guardian for your children, I'd say a Will gives you a significant return on investment! (I also know that Sophie has a Coach® bag and an iPad, and McKenzie has about $500 worth of video games. I think this is less about a worthwhile expense and more about priorities.)
-Best, Matthew
