A Note from Mr. Speziale
Dear Ponte Vedra High School Parents and Friends:

It's so good to be back to work, even though it is just part time for now.  I am on the road back to recovery and look forward to gradually easing back into the hectic pace of PVHS.

I sincerely appreciate all of the well wishes and gifts, too numerous to mention, sent during my leave.  I  was overwhelmed with the unbelievable kindness and concern of the Ponte Vedra High School family-it's an honor to be part of such an incredible group of people.

As we head into the testing season, I am confident that the teachers, students, and parents will continue to give it their all as they always do, and I anticipate a smooth end of the school year.

Sincerely,
Craig

Miss Ponte Vedra Pageant Taken By Storm
Twenty-two beautiful and talented high school juniors took to the stage on Saturday evening, March 8 to vie for the Miss Ponte Vedra High School Pageant crown held for the past year by Miss PVHS 2013 Leila Sabet.

The school's auditorium was filled to capacity as the sold-out crowd was entertained for over two and one-half hours, beginning with an upbeat group dance number entitled "The Richman's Frug from Sweet Charity".  Immediately following the opening number each contestant introduced themselves to the audience.  Emcees for the evening were Miss Ponte Vedra Sabet, who also co-holds the Miss Northeast Florida title, and the delightful and entertaining junior Mary Grace Scully.

Judges for the evening were: Karl Rogers, Tammy Johnson McGuire, a native to St. Johns County who graduating from Nease High School in its first graduating class was also the first Miss Nease, and Laura Adkison, an accomplished performer and teacher, former director of the Miss Nease Pageant for over ten years, with winners who have gone on to earn such titles as Miss Florida and Miss Kentucky.

Earlier in the week the contestants met with the judges for a personal five-minute interview that was scored, accounting for up to 35 percent of their overall score.  The opening number and individual introductions accounted for 10 percent of the scoring.  Following the opening sequence each contestant returned to the stage for the talent portion of the evening, which also earned up to 35 percent of her total score.  Outstanding displays of talent included singing, dance / gymnastics, jump roping, piano, and dramatic monologue.

Just before Intermission Sabet delivered her own outstanding dance presentation that brought rousing applause from the audience. Following intermission the Evening Gown Modeling competition took the stage.  Each contestant was given approximately one-minute to display not only their gown, but also their stage presence, confidence, and connection with the judges and audience.  This portion of the event accounted for 20 percent of the total score.

Following the modeling, and before the presentation of the first awards, Sabet gave a warm farewell speech and made her final walk as holder of the coveted crown.  Upon completion she was joined on stage by co-emcee Mary Grace Scully and long-time pageant director Randal Adkison.

The five finalists chosen from the field of 22 were Julia Scolapio, Sophia Bracken, Kendall Brower, Brenna Storm, and Lindsay Bettis.  Each were given the same final interview question, as determined by the judges, before the final scoring and presentation of the runner-up awards and the crowning of Miss Ponte Vedra.

Brower was named fourth runner-up, followed by Scolapio and Bracken, leaving Storm and Bettis in the final two positions.  When Bettis was announced as the first-runner up, Storm assumed the coveted role of Miss Ponte Vedra 2014. She received her crown from Sabet who had so ably had fulfilled her role over the past year.

During the evening Miss Storm earned several awards including Most Photogenic, Best Talent, and Best Evening Gown Modeling.  She also finished in the Top 5 of the Interview portion.  Her talent was an entertaining and lively presentation of the Carrie Underwood song "Cowboy Cassnova".  Storms lives Ponte Vedra Beach with her grandparents Geraldine and Billy Dettlaff and is the sister of Devon Storm.

On March 10th Ponte Vedra played their 2nd district game in a row, traveling to Nease for the match-up. Celebrating his birthday in style, Junior Eric Applegate scored just 27 seconds into the game. Nease junior goalie Kent Norris came up with several big saves. With a 4-2 lead, the Sharks offense came out firing in the 2nd quarter with two goals from Jason Randolph and Garrett Boyle. RJ Garcia added one to stretch the lead to 9-3.

The Sharks defense stymied Nease with  great efforts from Parker Eastland, Patrick Lynch, Augie Relihan and Nick Nehrling. Eric Weiner also contributed with several ground balls.

Applegate started the third quarter with his third goal of the night. The scoring paced slowed down a bit in this quarter with Boyle and Logan Taucher adding goals. Boyle had a big game, adding his  fourth and final goal in the 4th quarter and also was credited for two assists.  Randolph rounded out the scoring with a hat trick.  Goalie Colin Peaks had 3 saves. Senior Cody Legeza was in stellar form with three goals and 2 assists in the first half. Junior Miles Silva also contributed 2 of his 4 goals in the first half. Colin Peaks had two saves in goal thru two quarters. The second half was much the same, as the Red Raiders struggled to gain an offensive edge. 3/18/14 Sharks Undefeated in district play with 12-2 Victory over Creekside
The Ponte Vedra Sharks sealed first place in the district with a 12-2 win over Creekside on Tuesday night. Soggy field conditions forced the Sharks to move the game to Plantation Park in Julington Creek. The loss of home field advantage did not prove to be a problem as junior Miles Silva followed up his 5-goal day on Saturday with 2 goals to ignite the offense. Senior RJ Garcia added three as the Sharks built an 8-0 lead at intermission and increased it to 11-0 after 3. A scary moment in the 4th quarter as the Knights Brad Herrera was involved in a collision in front of the goal. Herrera was taken from the field in an ambulance and the Sharks players, coaches and families all wish him a speedy recovery. After the extended injury time out, the Knights hopped on the scoreboard with 2 goals. Ponte Vedra finishes regular season district play with a 3-0 record. On Friday, March 14, the JV team battled highly-rated Lake Highland Prep at home.  Lake Highland jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead before Ponte Vedra found its footing.  The Sharks battled back to close the first half in a 4-4 tie.  In the second half, it was all Ponte Vedra on both ends of the field as the Sharks scored 8 unanswered goals to win the game 12-4.  The Sharks played with high energy, winning virtually every face-off and ground ball and challenging every Lake Highland possession.  The defense was lead by Greg Celani, Austin Silva, Braxton Silva, and Bronson Holley, with Sean Hoffman doing a great job at LSM.  High scorers were Cord Bishop, Reid Smith and Jude Kuhn, each with 2 goals and 1 assist, Clay Welch with 2 goals, Andrew O'Dare with 1 goal and 2 assists, and Landon Taucher, Marshall Few, and Hal Swan with 1 goal each.

On March 18, during Spring Break, the boys faced the Creekside Knights in a game that was almost postponed because of bad weather.  Jacob Reeves got the scoring started with a run from his defensive position and the Sharks never looked back on their way to a 13-1 victory.  Andrew O'Dare led all scorers with 5 goals.  Reid Smith had 2 goals and Quinn Larson, Jude Kuhn, Hal Swan, John Santillo, and Marshall Few each had 1 goal.
