NHS Tutoring - NEW and IMPROVED
NHS tutoring is now more subject-specific, and will hopefully provide a better service for struggling students.

We're asking TEACHERS, GUIDANCE COUNSELORS, PARENTS, and STUDENTS to identify what subject a student  needs help in, let us know three days in advance, and we'll provide one-on-one tutoring with a NHS member who has self-identified as a confident and competent tutor in that subject.  We even have members available who can tutor AP courses!
Here's how it works for parents and students:

*    Email nhs.pvhs@gmail.com that you need a tutor for a student in a specific subject
o    For TUESDAY tutoring, we need to receive the email by THURSDAY.
o    For THURSDAY tutoring, we need to receive the email by MONDAY.

*    Student reports for tutoring at 8:30 am ROOM 650 on the correct day, with the assignment slip provided by their teacher, and the tutor is here waiting for them.

PLEASE help make this work by sending us your struggling students.  We have 150+ tutoring hours waiting to be filled.

ESE Parent Survey
February 1 - May 31
Parents, we need your help to make Florida's 2013-2014 ESE Parent Survey a record success!

Each year, the Florida Department of Education (FDOE) surveys parents of children with an individual educational plan (IEP) to determine how well your child's school is partnering with you and promoting your involvement in your child's education. All states must collect this data as part of their State Performance Plan, as required under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA).  Make your voice heard!

The web-based survey will open February 1, 2014.  You can complete the survey online at http://www.esesurvey.com or request a paper survey from your child's school.  Your feedback is important in helping the state and local school systems continue improving educational programs for children with special needs. Thank you!

For questions about the survey, please contact Aimee Mallini at FDOE 850-245-0916 aimeemallini@fldoe.org

Boys' Basketball:
Sharks End Successful Season with OT Loss to Baker County
It was not the ending Ponte Vedra's boys basketball was looking for in their regional opener with Baker County last Thursday, but the never say die Sharks came a split second from pulling off a stunner over a team that was an imposing 23-4 heading into the tourney.

Trailing by 4 points with only 0:48 second left in the contest, Ponte Vedra's senior point guard Jackson Johnson nearly single-handedly pulled the Sharks to victory.  Johnson nailed a 3 pointer to narrow the margin to 1 but the visitors quickly countered with 2 made free throws to take a 3-point lead.

Johnson drove the length of the court and somehow managed to strong arm in a contested short range runner, despite being fouled by Baker County's CeCe Jefferson, a 6'4 football superstar rated one of the top prep football players in the country.

Ironically Johnson, who has made more free throws than any other player on the First Coast, missed his free throw that would have tied the score with 0:34 seconds left on the clock.

Not to be deterred, the gritty Johnson stole the ball underneath the Shark's basket and curled in a reverse lay-up to give the Sharks a 1-point lead 50-49.

Baker County's Charles Ruise then was fouled with 0:14 showing on the clock and the junior gunner converted on one of his two free throws to tie up the heated contest at 50-50.

Time for one last shot for the Sharks to pull off the come back, Johnson's shot in heavy traffic rimmed off the cylinder. Ponte Vedra's Pay Boylan tipped in the missed shot but, unfortunately for the Shark faithful that again packed the Shark Tank, the tap in came just moments after the final buzzer went off sending the contest into overtime.

With Shark regulars Donovan Garrard and Ross McCarthy on the bench in overtime after having fouled out of the contest, the Sharks had little left in their tank during the four-minute overtime and fell to Baker Co. 66-54.

Not to be overlooked in the season finale was the outstanding success the Sharks had during this 2013-14 season.  The 21 victories easily surpassed their previous season high of 17 set two years earlier.

In district play the Sharks were a perfect 10-0 on the season, a district championship and three straight victories over perennial power Palatka.

Perhaps most important, the Sharks brought the fan interest in PV basketball to a fever pitch with near sell out crowds packing the local gymnasium during the second half of the season.

Outgoing senior star guard Jackson Johnson summed it up best with a quote following the game to the media:  "I'm really happy of how the program has grown.  We went from having crowds of 75 (when he was a freshman starter) to now having crowds of 1000."

Johnson certainly went out in style.  Playing his final game in a Shark uniform, the gritty Johnson, who will play at the next level for Tulane University, --- not in basketball--- but baseball, scored the final 11 points for the Sharks and came up with 6 assists and 6 steals.

The difference in the game was at the free throw line and the poor Shark shooting from behind the three-point arc.  Baker County attempted 26 free throws for the game, making good on 20 of those shots, compared to the Sharks lowly 6 attempts.

The normally sharp shooting Sharks had an uncharacteristic poor performance from long range, netting but 6 of their 29 three-point shots.

Johnson ended his career with 16 points, with Quinn Carey adding 15 and Matt McGuier 11, all in the first half.

Head coach Bud Beech and his valuable assistant Marcus Perez can take comfort in losing but two players from this year's rotation, Johnson and James Crowther.

With many regulars set to return in 2014-15, headed by front line starters Quinn Carey, Ross McCarthy and Donovan Garrard, as well has some promising newcomers from this years outstanding Junior Varsity team, Shark followers are all set to again see some outstanding basketball for years to come.

Boys' Varsity Lacrosse:
Sharks Split Results in Pre-Season Jamboree
The Sharks participated in the Providence Pre-Season Jamboree on Saturday afternoon. In the first game against the Stanton Prep Blue Devils, the Sharks were dominant and scored 8 goals in the first half. They added two more in the 2nd half and blanked the Blue Devils 10-0. A strong  defensive effort foiled Stanton's efforts to get even one shot on goal.7 different players found the back of the net.  Miles Silva led those scorers with 3 goals.
The second game saw the Sharks battle the Benjamin School and the result was much different. The Sharks scored first, but the Buccaneers answered back and continued to match goals throughout the first half. Tied at 3at the start of the 2nd half, the Sharks were plagued by penalties and Benjamin was able to capitalize on man-up situations to score 2 more goals and keep the Sharks scoreless. The final was 5-3. RJ Garcia, Eric Applegate and Miles Silva each contributed a goal.
On Monday, the Sharks will start their season at EverBank Field against Boca High in the Moe's Classic High School Kick-Off. On Wednesday they are on the road against Pedro Menendez.

3rd Annual Beaches Community Healthcare Family Walk and Fun Festival

Saturday, March 1, 2014, 9:00 a.m. - 11:00 a.m.

Seawalk Pavilion at Jacksonville Beach (north 1st Street at Beach Blvd)

Whether March "comes in like a lion or a lamb," it's not too late to get your new year off to a healthy start with a fun-filled, community event, all for a good cause - healthcare services at Beaches Community Healthcare, a Sulzbacher Center clinic.

It will be a great day of seaside family fun at beautiful Jacksonville Beach, complete with a beach walk, health and wellness vendors, refreshments, outdoor activities and more. More importantly, your participation will help support critically needed medical, dental and behavioral health services for our uninsured beaches neighbors.

With nowhere else to turn, more and more of our uninsured neighbors are seeking health services provided by the Sulzbacher Center's Beaches Community Healthcare clinic. Our federally qualified clinic provides more than 800 patients with behavioral, dental and primary health care every month. But the Sulzbacher Center needs your help more than ever to meet the growing medical needs of our community's most vulnerable citizens.

Here's how you can help:
Register as an individual, family or corporate group and participate in the walk.
Partner with us as a Community Health Sponsor.
Take part as a Wellness Vendor to share healthy living information, food samples, etc. Or offer a sampling of special services, such as massage, yoga, exercise tips, etc.

Whether you walk like a lion or stroll like a lamb, come join your friends, neighbors, family, and coworkers at the Jacksonville Beach oceanfront on March 1.  By supporting our family-friendly community event, you will be helping to improve the health and well being of those who need it most.
