Attention 10th Grade Parents!
All 10th grade students will be taking the Grade 10  FCAT 2.0 Writing Test on Tuesday, February 25, 2014.  The FCAT 2.0 Writing Test is administered in one 60-minute session in which students write an essay in response to a prompt.  Later this spring, your student will receive a score for his/her writing on a scale from 1-6 score points.  You may visit http://fcat.fldoe.org/writing-prompts.asp to access writing prompt descriptions and scoring guides with sample essays.

Please review the following policies with your student before testing:

■ Electronic Devices-If your student is found with ANY electronic devices, including, but not limited to, cell phones and smart phones, at any time during testing OR during breaks, his or her test will be invalidated, which means it will not be scored. The best practice is for students to leave devices at home or in their lockers on the day of testing.

■ Testing Rules Acknowledgment-The Writing test includes a Testing Rules Acknowledgment that reads, "I understand the testing rules that were just read to me. If I do not follow these rules, my test score may be invalidated." Prior to testing, test administrators will read the rules to students, and students must acknowledge that they understand the testing rules by signing their names under the statement.

■ Discussing Test Content after Testing-The last portion of the testing rules read to students before they sign the acknowledgment reads, "After the test, you may not discuss the Writing prompt with anyone. This includes any type of electronic communication, such as texting, emailing, or posting online, for example, on websites like Facebook, Twitter, or Instagram." If students are found sharing information about test items, even without the intent to cheat, their tests will be invalidated.

■ Leaving Campus-If your student leaves campus before completing the test (for an appointment, illness, etc.), he or she WILL NOT be allowed to complete the test. If your student does not feel well on the day of testing, it may be best for him or her to wait and be tested on the make-up day.
If you have any questions related to this test administration, you may contact Mrs. Hrach at 904-547-7378 or hrachd@stjohns.k12.fl.us. For more information about the statewide assessment program, visit the FDOE website at http://fcat.fldoe.org/.  Thank you for supporting your student as he or she prepares for the test.

ESE Parent Survey
February 1 - May 31
Parents, we need your help to make Florida's 2013-2014 ESE Parent Survey a record success!

Each year, the Florida Department of Education (FDOE) surveys parents of children with an individual educational plan (IEP) to determine how well your child's school is partnering with you and promoting your involvement in your child's education. All states must collect this data as part of their State Performance Plan, as required under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA).  Make your voice heard!

The web-based survey will open February 1, 2014.  You can complete the survey online at http://www.esesurvey.com or request a paper survey from your child's school.  Your feedback is important in helping the state and local school systems continue improving educational programs for children with special needs. Thank you!

For questions about the survey, please contact Aimee Mallini at FDOE 850-245-0916 aimeemallini@fldoe.org

Girls Basketball:

The Ponte Vedra Lady Sharks saw their season come to an end last Thursday evening, February 6, during an away Regional contest at Bishop Kenny.

The Lady Sharks jumped to an early lead only to surrender the advantage when the first quarter ended at 8-12.   In the second quarter the Lady Sharks played tough but were only able to cut into the deficit by a single point, although they scored 12 points.  Halftime closed with the Lady Sharks down 20-23.  A slow offensive and defensive start in the third quarter found the Lady Sharks falling behind by 15-points midway through the quarter before the team came back alive. From that point they cut nearly halfway into the Bishop Kenny lead edging themselves back into the game with the quarter closing at a 34-42 shortfall.   The charging Lady Sharks continued to whittle away at Bishop Kenny throughout the final stanza on the power of three-point baskets by Teresa Irwin and Senior Tori Koski.  With 1:30 remaining the Lady Sharks were within three points at 46-49 as Megan Piggott was fouled.  She converted on both free-throws to narrow the deficit to a single point at 48-49. Bishop Kenny immediately went down court to hit for two taking back their 3-point advantage as the game was at 48-51 with less than a minute remaining.  After nearly 50 seconds without any scoring, and the clock under 10 seconds, Lady Shark Brenna Storm was fouled and sent to the free-throw line.  She converted on both shots to again narrow the deficit to a single-point at 53-54. As the ball was inbounded Tori Koski took an intentional foul, which unfortunately led to Bishop Kenny gaining the two-points back from the line for a 56-53 lead. In an exciting final five-seconds the Lady Sharks advanced the ball down court from where Christie Begeman took a valiant effort at a final three-point attempt to tie the game. Bishop Kenny advanced into the Regional finals this coming week.

The Lady Sharks were led by Piggott who gathered 14 points on four baskets and six of six from the free-throw line.  Begeman recorded 11 points on two three-pointers, two regular baskets, and one for one from the free-throw line.  Mandi Koski earned 10 points, all from the floor.  Storm hit for seven including those closing clutch pair of free-throws. Miriam Grant collected five points while Irwin and Tori Koski each had three,

The team finished the season with two losses, one in the District finals to Palatka 47-52, and the opening game of the Regionals to Bishop Kenny to close out the season with a record of 17-10 during regular and post-season play.  Ponte Vedra had brought an eight-game winning streak into the post season.

Boys' Basketball:
District Champs host Baker County Thursday
Another jam packed and highly partisan crowd jammed the Shark Tank Friday evening where they were treated to another exciting Ponte Vedra victory, 72-67 over a talented Palatka squad.

The win was the 21st win on the season for the Sharks and the 3rd on the season over a Panther team that made it into the final four a year ago.

More importantly, the win was for the 5A District Championship, insuring the Sharks of hosting a first round regional game February 13 against Baker Co.

It was a hard fought and well-played game by both teams with the Sharks outscoring Palatka in each quarter, but never by more than a 2-point margin in any of the periods.

The visitors from Palatka took the lead at 19-18 early into the second quarter, but the Sharks countered with a shot in the paint from James Crowther to take a 1-point lead, a lead they would never relinquish the rest of the evening.

Although Crowther was experiencing a rare off night, by connecting on but 2 of his 11 field goal attempts, it was the 6'1 senior's play just before the halftime buzzer that may have turned the tide in the Shark's favor.

After Palatka 6'5 forward Desmond Chandler missed a slam dunk with just 11 seconds remaining in the half, giving the ball back to the Sharks, Crowther surely didn't miss his dunk.

With 1.2 seconds left on the clock, Crowther leaped high in the air to slam dunk home a missed 3-point attempt of Jackson Johnson, not only giving the Sharks a 30-27 edge at the break, but sending a capacity crowd into a frenzy and giving the Sharks a big dose of confidence entering the second half.

6'4 junior sharpshooter Quinn Carey tallied 13 of his 22 points in the first half to keep the Sharks on top with Johnson scoring 7 and 6'5 Junior Donovan Garrard adding 6 markers.

The 3rd quarter was much like the previous 2 quarters with the Sharks at one point enjoying 7 point edge at 47-40, only to see the always hustling Panthers rally to close the gap to 4, 49-45 heading into the final quarter.

Johnson netted 8 of the Shark points in the quarter with Garrard muscling his 6'5 frame underneath to tally 6 of his game total of 12.

Johnson and Carey each drilled 3-pointers at the onset of the final quarter to give the Sharks a 57-47 lead, their biggest lead they would enjoy during the contest.

Palatka coach Don Lockhart then had his Panthers take their already stifling full court-pressing defense and turn it up yet another notch.

The Panthers fought hard and created three turnovers that they would convert into baskets to bring Palatka within 3 points at 64-61 with 2:37 remaining.  However, the Sharks never lost their composure, quickly breaking the Panther press with an easy lay-up basket by Ross McCarthy to lead 66-61.

Among the spectators in attendance was Ponte Vedra Beach resident and basketball icon Christian Laettner.  Surely the former member of that 1992 Olympic Dream team thought of his former teammate Bobby Hurley at Duke when the Sharks put the ball into Jackson Johnson's hands.

Forced to foul, as even double team traps would not work against Johnson, Jackson went to the foul line 10 times in the quarter, and made 9 of his free throws.  Ironically, his one miss ended his streak of consecutive free throws made at 33 straight.

A last moment three-point bomb by Palatka's Chandler made the final score read 72-67 as once again the students swarmed the court to congratulate their Shark classmates.

Johnson, who scored 26 points against Palatka in their previous meeting two weeks earlier, once again was a thorn in the side to the Panthers by scoring a game high 27 points, while dishing off 10 assists, 3 steals, and only committing 3 turnovers against a very tough Palatka defense.

Quinn Carey continued his terrific play by having another outstanding game for the district champs.  Carey scored 22 points, hitting on 5 of his 8 shots from 3-point land, pulled down 9 rebounds and did an outstanding job of helping the Sharks break the tenacious Panther press.

And although he scored a modest 6 points, James Crowther's last field goal he scored on the evening ---the monster dunk just before the halftime break --- just might have been the most important basket of what has turned into the most successful basketball season in Ponte Vedra's brief history.

The Sharks will now set their sites on Baker Co., who will come to Ponte Vedra on Thursday night with a season record of 24 wins, against but 3 defeats.

One of those defeats was in their district final game Friday night against Bishop Kenny, a game they lost by but 1 point in overtime.

Bishop Kenny scored 2 free throws with one second remaining to upset Baker Co. and send them on the road to play at the Shark Tank Thursday in front of what surely will be another tumultuous crowd.

If the Sharks can post the upset over Baker Co, they will then again be the host team and would play the winner of the game between Bishop Kenny and Palatka on Saturday the 15th at 7:00 PM.

For now Ponte Vedra Coach Bud Beech and Palatka coach Don Lockhart are surely not looking past Thursday and yet another battle between these two evenly matched teams.
