Attention 10th Grade Parents!
All 10th grade students will be taking the Grade 10  FCAT 2.0 Writing Test on Tuesday, February 25, 2014.  The FCAT 2.0 Writing Test is administered in one 60-minute session in which students write an essay in response to a prompt.  Later this spring, your student will receive a score for his/her writing on a scale from 1-6 score points.  You may visit http://fcat.fldoe.org/writing-prompts.asp to access writing prompt descriptions and scoring guides with sample essays.

Please review the following policies with your student before testing:

■ Electronic Devices-If your student is found with ANY electronic devices, including, but not limited to, cell phones and smart phones, at any time during testing OR during breaks, his or her test will be invalidated, which means it will not be scored. The best practice is for students to leave devices at home or in their lockers on the day of testing.

■ Testing Rules Acknowledgment-The Writing test includes a Testing Rules Acknowledgment that reads, "I understand the testing rules that were just read to me. If I do not follow these rules, my test score may be invalidated." Prior to testing, test administrators will read the rules to students, and students must acknowledge that they understand the testing rules by signing their names under the statement.

■ Discussing Test Content after Testing-The last portion of the testing rules read to students before they sign the acknowledgment reads, "After the test, you may not discuss the Writing prompt with anyone. This includes any type of electronic communication, such as texting, emailing, or posting online, for example, on websites like Facebook, Twitter, or Instagram." If students are found sharing information about test items, even without the intent to cheat, their tests will be invalidated.

■ Leaving Campus-If your student leaves campus before completing the test (for an appointment, illness, etc.), he or she WILL NOT be allowed to complete the test. If your student does not feel well on the day of testing, it may be best for him or her to wait and be tested on the make-up day.
If you have any questions related to this test administration, you may contact Mrs. Hrach at 904-547-7378 or hrachd@stjohns.k12.fl.us. For more information about the statewide assessment program, visit the FDOE website at http://fcat.fldoe.org/.  Thank you for supporting your student as he or she prepares for the test.

ESE Parent Survey
February 1 - May 31
Parents, we need your help to make Florida's 2013-2014 ESE Parent Survey a record success!

Each year, the Florida Department of Education (FDOE) surveys parents of children with an individual educational plan (IEP) to determine how well your child's school is partnering with you and promoting your involvement in your child's education. All states must collect this data as part of their State Performance Plan, as required under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA).  Make your voice heard!

The web-based survey will open February 1, 2014.  You can complete the survey online at http://www.esesurvey.com or request a paper survey from your child's school.  Your feedback is important in helping the state and local school systems continue improving educational programs for children with special needs. Thank you!

For questions about the survey, please contact Aimee Mallini at FDOE 850-245-0916 aimeemallini@fldoe.org

Boys' Basketball: Sharks Open Tourney Tuesday on a Streak
Hollywood couldn't have scripted a more perfect ending to the regular season for the Ponte Vedra Boys varsity basketball team than what took place at the Shark Tank last week.
Before three near capacity crowds, the Ponte Vedra Sharks extended their current winning streak to eight straight heading into FHSAA tournament play this week.
And they won all three games against three of their closest rivals, saving the best for the final eight minutes in the season finale against Creekside.
After disposing, with a little room to spare, Fletcher Monday evening, and archrival Nease on Wednesday, such was not the case in their battle Friday night against a superbly coached Creekside five.
Prior to the start of the game with Creekside the Shark's honored their four seniors, Michael White, JR Hotes, James Crowther and Jackson Johnson, with a near capacity crowd in attendance.
After falling behind 15-9 at the first quarter break, it appeared the Sharks had regained control of the game by racing back to take a 24-18 lead at the break.
The huge Shark crowd was silenced by a couple of Creekside sharpshooters in the third quarter, Jamieson Powell and Chris Richardson, who singed the nets with five three pointers to spark the visitors on a 22-4 run on the surprised Sharks.
Trailing by 12 points entering the final eight-minute period, the Sharks finally caught fire, as the packed house roared in approval.  The dynamic Shark 1-2 duo of Jackson Johnson and Quinn Carey, held to a combined 10 points in the first three quarters, began firing on all cylinders while the rest of their teammates tightened up their defense to the delight of the Shark faithful.
Carey hit a couple of lay-ups, and drilled one of his patented long range three pointers, to cut the lead down to five points.  A Johnson three pointer narrowed the gap down to two before the Knights were able to answer with a two-pointer.
With less than two minutes to go the Knights fouled Shark Junior center Donovan Garrard, who had missed on his previous 4 attempts at the line.  However, much to the dismay of the Creekside followers, Donovan made a pair of free throws to again make it a two-point ball game.
Jackson Johnson then forced a five second call while defending his man and then was fouled with a little more than a minute left.  Johnson, who has now made an amazing 81 of his 92 free throw attempts in the fourth quarter of games this season, made both free throws to finally tie the game at 44-44.
A Creekside player was fouled at the one minute mark but missed the front end of the one and one and the Sharks called time out after securing the rebound.
The Shark brain trust of head coach Bud Beech and assistant Marcus Perez gave the Sharks their final instructions at the time out.
And they designed the perfect play!
Jackson Johnson again dribbled away from frantic Creekside defenders for about 50 long seconds and, after drawing a crowd, passed to Quinn Carey near the foul line.  Instructed to go one-on-one down the lane in hopes of making a lay-up or drawing a foul, the Shark sharpshooter accomplished both with 4.4 seconds showing on the clock as pandemonium erupted in the stands.
A long range shot by the Knights was well off the mark and the Sharks won 47-44 and stretched their winning streak to eight and an all time PVHS season best of 19 wins.
With Johnson and Carey experiencing a rare off night in the shooting department, 6'1 senior James Crowther kept the Sharks in the game by scoring 11 of his 13 points in the first half. Carey scored 9 of his 13 points in the deciding fourth quarter while Johnson hit double figures with 10 points and chipped in with 7 assists, including the final game winning assist to Quinn.
Ponte Vedra opened the week's action with their best scoring quarter of the season when they raced out to a 30-16 lead after the opening period of play in last Monday's battle of the beach against neighboring Fletcher.
Jackson Johnson and Quinn Carey combined for 54 points and were never threatened, as the closest the Senators could come during the contest was eight points with the Sharks on top at the finish 77-69.
Johnson led the Sharks with 28 points, including a perfect 11-11 from the free throw line and added 8 assists for the victors, while Carey netted a personal high of 26 and pulled down 9 rebounds.
The Sharks were quickly back in action Wednesday hosting rival Nease, played at the time, before the largest crowd in Ponte Vedra basketball history, an attendance record that would last but two days
After trailing by one, 20-19 midway through the second quarter, the Sharks then busted out on a 12-0 run to take a 31-20 lead at halftime over Nease and were never again threatened as the locals pulled away to win 69-54.
Quinn Carey paced the Sharks in scoring with 22 points while James Crowther netted a season high 17.  Jackson Johnson scored all 15 of his points in the first half and added 9 assists.
The Sharks will next focus on  this weeks district tournament that were be hosted for the first time by Ponte Vedra.
Looking for their 20th win in school history, the Sharks will play the winner of Monday's game between Clay and Ridgeview Tuesday at 7:30 PM, following the first district game between Palatka and Menendez.
The winners of Tuesday's game will then meet Friday at the Shark tank at 7:00 PM for the district championship.

Wrestling:
The Wrestling team traveled to Creekside on Saturday to compete in the District Wrestling Tournament. The Sharks came away with 7 athletes qualifying for the Regional Tournament which will take place this Friday and Saturday in Tallahassee - a team record!
Junior Colin Peaks took first place in the 152 pound weight class. Junior Matt Norton took 2nd place in the 126 pound weight class. Sophomore Zachary Gregory placed 3rd in the 145 pound weight class. Senior Matt Arnett placed 4th in the 220 pound weight class. Junior Michael Swain took 4th place in the 160 pound weight class and Freshman Jairo Hernandez placed 4th in the 120 pound weight class.

Whether March "comes in like a lion or a lamb," it's not too late to get your new year off to a healthy start with a fun-filled, community event, all for a good cause - healthcare services at Beaches Community Healthcare, a Sulzbacher Center clinic.

Our federally qualified clinic provides more than 800 patients with behavioral, dental and primary health care every month. But the Sulzbacher Center needs your help more than ever to meet the growing medical needs of our community's most vulnerable citizens.

Here's how you can help:
Register as an individual, family or corporate group and participate in the walk.
Partner with us as a Community Health Sponsor.
Take part as a Wellness Vendor to share healthy living information, food samples, etc. Or offer a sampling of special services, such as massage, yoga, exercise tips, etc.

Whether you walk like a lion or stroll like a lamb, come join your friends, neighbors, family, and coworkers at the Jacksonville Beach oceanfront on March 1.  By supporting our family-friendly community event, you will be helping to improve the health and well being of those who need it most.
