Scorecard

Girls' Basketball:

The Ponte Vedra HS Lady Sharks had another busy week as they played three games, winning two to run their regular season record to six wins and three losses.

On Tuesday evening, December 3rd, Pedro Menendez ventured into the Shark Tank where the Lady Sharks jumped to a quick 10-point lead in the first quarter when it ended 21-11.  By half-time the lead had grown to 24 points as the Sharks headed to the locker room with a comfortable 42-18 margin.  More of the same in the third period as the home team added 15 points while holding Menendez to a meager five-points.  The game ended with a running clock at 70-31.

Megan Piggot led Ponte Vedra scoring with 26 points, and also picked up five steal, four assists and four rebounds.  Christi Begeman added 13 points and picked up three steals. Always dependable Mandi Koski hit for 12 points, collected seven rebounds, and also found five steals.  Erin Landis, who swaps court-time with Koski, hit for six points and garnered a team high eight rebounds.  While Brenna Storm had only two points she led the team with six assists and brought in six rebounds and two steals.  Miriam Grant had an all-round solid evening with four points, and seven rebounds.  Rachel Aspinwall hit for five points and had a rebound on each side of the court.  Michaela Hulihan scored two points and gathered in three rebounds.

Thursday evening December 5 the Lady Sharks boarded a bus to a hostile opponent at St. Augustine High School.  The tables were reversed from Tuesday's dominating victory when the Lady Sharks fell to the taller and faster St. Augustine team 59-11.  Megan Piggott was benched with a minor injury, leaving only seven Ponte Vedra players to deal with the onslaught.  St. Augustine jumped to a 34-8 first quarter led.  Over the final three quarters the Lady Sharks managed only three additional points with the game ending at 59-11.  Christi Begeman was the high team scorer with five points.  Miriam Grant, Erin Landis, and Mandi Koski rounded out the scoring with two points each.

The following evening the Lady Sharks hit home court with a dominate victory over Orange Park's Ridgeview.   Showing few battle scars from the prior evening the Lady Sharks drove to a quick 13-2 first quarter lead.  By half-time they were dominating Ridgeview on both ends of the court holding the young team to only six points while scoring 29 of their own.  Over the final two quarters the game went into a running clock as the third quarter ended 44-10, and the final tally rose to 57-15.

Piggott fired in a team high 29 points and was backed by Mandi Koski's 17.  Julia Cressman collected four points, Miriam Grant hit for three, and Christi Begeman had two.  Brenna Storm had a team high seven assists and shared team high steal honors with Koski at four.  Both Piggott and Koski collect game high rebounds with eight apiece. Erin Landis followed with seven.

The Lady Sharks are on the road this week traveling to Palatka on Tuesday evening, then invade Nease on Thursday, and finish the week with a Saturday eventing game at Providence.

Boys' Basketball:

Ponte Vedra's boy's varsity basketball team resumes action at home this week with a pair of games beginning Tuesday night against St. Augustine, followed by a district clash with first time opponent Ridgeview on Thursday.

The Sharks have been idle for seven days following an important road district win on Dec 3 against Menendez, improving their season's overall record to 3-2 and 1-0 in district competition.

The host Falcons of Menendez proved to be a tough foe for the Sharks, as it took a decisive 19-8 run in the final quarter before the Sharks were able to pull away.

Jackson Johnson took charge in the second half where he tallied 23 of his game high 29 points, 13 coming in the pivotal fourth quarter to spearhead the victory.

The Sharks trailed Menendez at halftime 27-26 before finally taking a slim one point 39-38 lead heading into the final stanza.

Johnson then began his final period barrage by nailing a three pointer and a couple of pull up 16-foot jumpers to ignite the Shark attack.  The final moments of the game saw Johnson doing his best Bob Cousy/Marques Haynes impersonation by forcing Menendez to foul while dribbling the basketball.

6'4 Junior Ross McCarthy had a big bucket and a pair of free throws in the quarter to help insure the Sharks of a winning record when they host the Yellow jackets of St. Augustine on Tuesday evening.

Coach Bud Beech and his new assistant Marcus Perez are hopeful of the Sharks going on a run with their next three games at home before visiting last year's nemesis Bartram Trail before the holiday break.

Johnson leads the Sharks in scoring with a 20 point per game average to begin the season with Junior Quinn Carey also in double figures with 12 ppg.  6'4 Junior Donovan Garrard leads the locals in rebounding with 32 rebounds over the first five games while Johnson leads in assists and steals.

6'2 Sr. James Crowther has sparked the Sharks with a great defensive effort in the early going with the 6'4 McCarthy showing consistent improvement from game to game.

A pair of juniors guards who got a late start after seeing duty on the Ponte Vedra football team, Corey Russi and Pat Boylan, have supplied some much needed depth in the backcourt.

The varsity contests will follow the Junior Varsity games that will tip off at 6:00 PM. Coach Dustin Latta's very young JV squad, featuring four freshman starters, are off to a great start with a record of 3-1 heading into their game with the Yellow Jackets Tuesday evening.rter.

Boys' Soccer:

Varsity - The Varsity Boys Soccer remain undefeated playing their first home game against Providence Dec 3, winning 2-0.  The first half Ponte Vedra put a lot of pressure on Providence's net but could not score, going into half time with a 0-0 score. Second Half performance was stronger,  Ponte Vedra's striker Ben Costantino scored one goal , and Corey Johnson was credited with second.

JV - JV Boys Soccer continues winning streak with a 9-1 victory over Clay County High School, Goals by Alec Schoengrund, Sam Nicholson (2) , Jordon Klefeker (2) , David Jones, Chris Howard, Ethan Penn (2) and Jack Bingemann.  JV Boys soccer beat Providence  8 - 0 goals by Cameron Alvarez, Jordon Klefeker (2) Chris Howard (2) Ethan Penn (2) and Jack Bingemann. Will Bomar is defending the net as starter goalkeeper.
