 Boys' Basketball:
SHARKS HOST BISHOP KENNY IN FIRST HOME GAME

Ponte Vedra's much improved basketball team will take a two-game winning streak into Monday's home opener for the 2013-14 season when they host Bishop Kenny.

The challenge to remain undefeated will be extremely difficult for the Sharks as Bishop Kenny, coming off a season which saw the Crusaders reach the state final four, are also sporting a 2-0 record following a pair of convincing early season victories.

The varsity game will follow the 6:00 PM scheduled start for the Junior Varsity contest between the two rivals, with a large crowd expected to watch the action at 'The Shark Tank'.

The Sharks followed up their two victorious pre-season tune-ups with a pair of wins this past week to set up Monday's battle of the unbeatens.

Coach Bud Beech's cagers made the short jaunt to Episcopal Tuesday night and rallied from a seven-point third quarter deficit to defeat a veteran laden Eagle squad 52-41.

The Sharks saw Episcopal deploy a box and one defense to contain high scoring Shark point guard Jackson Johnson but other Shark players came through in the closing stages of the contest.

The Sharks trailed 21-19 at halftime but a late third quarter spurt saw the Sharks go into the final stanza tied at 34-34.  The final period belonged to Ponte Vedra as they outscored Episcopal 18-7 with Quinn Carey, who led all scorers with 14 points, leading the way for the Sharks.

Donovan Garrard chipped in 13 points and added 9 rebounds for the victors while Johnson directed the offense with 6 assists, 6 rebounds and 3 steals while tallying 9 points.  Isiah Gibson paced the host Eagles with 13 points with Danny Voss adding 10.

No such comeback was needed in the Shark's second tilt of the season as they raced out to a commanding 18-5 first quarter lead against Fletcher Saturday night and then cruised to a convincing 63-45 win.

Jackson Johnson and Quinn Carey combined for 41 of the Sharks total points as coach Bud Beech was able to utilize all of his 12 man roster during the game.

Johnson filled up the stat sheet by adding 7 assists, five rebounds; a school record 8 steals, and netted 20 points while committing but one turnover.  Carey had an outstanding shooting night from the field by connecting on 9 of 11 shots from the field including a perfect 3-3 from 3-point range.

After a pair of pre-season contests and the two regular season tilts, coach Beech's 2013-14 edition has flashed signs for what could very well be a promising season throughout the current campaign.

Beech, and his experienced assistant coach Marcus Perez, is encouraged with the depth of this year's squad as they continue to search for a solid rotation.

Beech welcomed a pair of juniors off the football team for the start of the regular campaign in Pat Boylan and Corey Russi and each have made an early positive impact.

Returning starter James Crowther has given the team some much needed energy while 6'4 junior Ross McCarthy continues to improve his play from game to game.

Although the Sharks looked very impressive in the opening stanza Saturday night at Fletcher, they did experience some sloppy moments during the contest that contributed to 18 turnovers, many of those being of the unforced variety that Beech and Perez are confident of correcting in the coming weeks.

To keep up to date for more complete news and stats for Ponte Vedra Boys basketball, both for the varsity as well as the Junior Varsity teams, followers of PVHS hoops are encouraged to log on to the Sharks' web site at:
