Scorecard
Girls' Basketball:
The Ponte Vedra HS Lady Sharks hit the courts for the opening of their 2013-2014 season on Tuesday, November 5. The past two-week stretch included two pre-season tournament games at Providence and three home games this past week. Coach Jim Piggott returns for his third season with Team Captains Megan Piggott, Tori Koski, Mandi Koski, and Brenna Storm leading the team.
The Lady Sharks opened with a flurry by defeating Yulee 77-54. Megan Piggott lead the team with 30 points, followed by Christi Begeman's 21 and Mandi Koski's 11. Rounding out the team scoring were Erin Landis with five, Rachel Aspinwalll at three, and Miriam Grant and Julia Cressman with two apiece. Two days later Ponte Vedra faced the always difficult Providence Lady Stallions in a tough battle where PVHS fell 66 to 55. The lead traded sides early, but Providence outlasted Ponte Vedra with a 4th quarter push. Piggott again lead team scoring with 19 points. Double-digit scoring came from Mandi Koski with 15 and Begeman with 10. Four other added to the scoring lead by Brenna Storm with four, Aspinwall with three, and two each from Cressman and Grant. An injury to Tori Koski took her out of the game and unfortunately it may be for a good portion of the season. She will be missed.
The regular season began on Tuesday, November 12 when cross-county rival Creekside invaded the Shark Tank. In a hard fought game the Lady Sharks came up four points short of gaining their first-ever victory over the perennial tough team. The game game ended at 48-44. A tough Creekside defense managed to stifle most of the PV offense allowing only four players to score. The four scorers were: Piggott, 24; Begeman 14; Mandi Koski 4; and Mickaela Hulihan with 2.
Two days later, on November 13, the Bartram Lady Bears made their way to Ponte Vedra. The Lady Sharks looked flat as they fell to a dominating Bartram defense that employed a full-court press for most of the game. The Lady Sharks could manage only 29 points while the normally aggressive defense was broken by Bartram offense who earned 72 points. Again only four Lady Sharks earned their way into the scoring column with Piggot hitting for 18, Mandi Koski brought in 5 points while Cressman had four and Begeman added two.
On Saturday afternoon, November 16, Keystone traveled Ponte Vedra. The Lady Sharks dominated from the beginning driving their way to a 74-35 victory. The event was marked by a historic event for Ponte Vedra High School when Junior Guard Megan Piggot blasted through the career 1,000 point barrier on her way to leading the team with 30 points. The game was stopped in the 3rd Quarter to present her with the game ball used to hit the mark, a first for girl's basketball at the school. She was followed by Christi Begeman's impressive 21 points and and Mandi Koski's 11. Rounding out the team scoring were Erin Landis with five, Rachel Aspinwalll at three, and Miriam Grant and Julia Cressman with two apiece.
The Lady Sharks have two home games this week. They will be taking on St. Joseph on Tuesday evening, then have three days to prepare for Nease who invades the Shark Tank on Friday evening. Please come out to support this group of hardworking young ladies.
