Bullying Prevention

Attention all Sophomores! Are you a natural leader who wants to make a difference in your community? If so, then the Hugh O'Brian Youth Leadership program (HOBY) may be for you. PVHS is able to nominate one 10th grade student to represent the school and the state as a HOBY ambassador. There will be an application and selection process. If selected, the PVHS HOBY ambassador commits to attending a Youth Leadership Seminar next summer. How to apply? All interested 10th graders should see Ms. Mitchell in the guidance office to obtain an application and the essay topic. Completed applications are due to Ms. Mitchell no later than November 6, 2013. All essays will be evaluated by a team at the school. The PVHS HOBY student ambassador will be chosen based on leadership ability and outstanding written communication skills. For more information please visit www.hoby.org. Reading Lab Volunteers Needed Ponte Vedra High has a solution to help its students! We have a reading lab that works one on one with a parent volunteer to help our students get organized, go over unknown words, help think test questions through and more. These students need a little specialized attention in order to give them a wider skill set or confidence level and build a stronger foundation with reading skills. You can make a difference to one of them. You don't have to know the topic or be a doctorate candidate, you just have to want to make the difference in someone's life - a difference that could change their life! Please do! Contact Yvonne Ratcliffe at y.ratcliffe@comcast.net. Thank you! All Call for Cafeteria Volunteers! Our Food & Nutrition Services Manager, Susan Johnson, really needs some volunteers for serving lunch in the cafeteria. We have so many kids to serve in a very short time. It really makes everything so much more efficient with the help of the volunteers. Unfortunately the county cannot afford to give us any more hired hands. Even if your kids bring their lunch it is a really great way to see the kids and be a HUGE help! The commitment is about 2 hours per shift. We are looking for as many helpers as we can so that we can do a rotating schedule for Susan. Times: Arrive at least 10 minutes prior to the start time to allow check in at the front office . Shift times are as follows: Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday 11:30 - 1:45 Wednesday 11:15 - 1:15 The dress is casual. Closed toed shoes(tennis shoes) hair in a ponytail and wear a hat. Please let me know your availability so that we can continue to keep PVHS the best in all areas for our kids. Please contact Suzanne Franco to get involved. 904-613-4120 holley.franco@gmail.com St. Johns River State College Tour On November 8 Juniors and Seniors are invited to tour St. Johns River State College from 10-1:30. The Ponte Vedra Girls Divers swept the medals: First Place, Meg Barnhorst (10th grade), 225.55 Second Place, Lora Frazier (12th grade), 205.75 Third Place, Mercedes Poole (10 grade), 126.9 In the Boys Diving Competition, Creekside won the top three medals: Fourth Place, Wes Virtue (11th grade), 131.0 Fifth Place, Josh Daniels (11th grade), 120.15 Ponte Vedra divers have now completed their regular season and head into Districts for post season competition. Cross Country:With the Varsity teams taking the week off to prepare for next week's District Championship, the focus was on the Shark JV team this week to see what kind of future PV cross country teams have in the coming years. The North Florida JV Championships were held at Bishop Kenny Saturday morning and it was the second time the Sharks had run the course this year. This gave all our Sharks a chance to see how much they have improved during the 2013 campaign and improved results were the norm for the day as most athletes were rewarded significantly improved times since they ran the course in early September. The boys team took third place behind Mandarin and Bishop Kenny, the two top JV programs in the area. The boys were led by award winner Frank Blumenfeld who took 14th out of 157 runners to lead a swarm of Sharks that followed. In 15th place freshman Perry Bechtle had a season PR, junior Brett Green in 19th, sophomore Andrew Kessler in 20th, junior Tyler Lowery in 22nd, Evan Weiner took 26th and sophomores Palmer Mowlam in 27th and Mahi Sankar in 30th place to round out the team scoring for the Sharks. Providing leadership for the team and running their last race, senior Kevin Kellaher had a season PR and Carson Foster was not far behind. Juniors Johnathon Fennell, Dylan O'Shea and Nathan Worrell, along with sophomores Cole Laur, Cameron Rumsey and Brandon Blackwelder all finished their seasons with strong performances. Our freshman group continued their steady improvement and our strongest class in years leave all involved with the program and excited for the future. Mark Davey came back from injury to run a PR followed by Greg Kearney, Ryan Quintal, Alex Lazzara, Harrison Crowley and Davis Massey also with PR's on this difficult, slow course. Marshall Frye, Sean Minchin, Matthew Crawford, Clark Russell and Peter Carmichael all made special efforts to fight back from injuries and illnesses to make it back for the last race of the season!! The Lady Sharks also took 3rd place in the team completion behind Bolles and Bishop Kenny. Your Lady Sharks were led by junior Sara Lindell who took 10th place overall and 8th in the team scoring out of 156 finishers in a strong race. Sara was followed closely by freshman Madison Santore in 12th place with a PR and by a pack of juniors with Alexa Burch taking 13th, Kerri Wonsock in 19th, Stephanie Stroupe in 21st and Grace Kellaher in 22nd place. Senior Rachael Babcock finished her fine career here with PVHS in 25th place with her best race of the year. A group of freshman led by Fallon Farrell, Caroline Bing, Madison Cooper and Kelly Crolius ran strong races and had significant improvements over the last time they had run this course. Senior Luna Adamo competed though ill in her last race as a member of the PV team--way to set an example for our other "walking wounded/ill" runners who gutted out their last races; junior Kim Halbert and freshman Heather Frank, Hannah Lilly and Katherine Scott, way to go ladies! Girls' Golf:Lady Sharks Varsity Golf Team Runners Up at Districts, Move On to Regional Finals! The Lady Sharks, who finished 10-1 in the regular season, got their post-season off to a good start, taking runner up honors in the District Championship on October 14 at Julington Creek Plantation. Junior Nicolette Donovan took overall medalist honors with a one-over par 73 and sophomore Hannah Berman finished tied for second on the scorecard overall with a 79. Bartram Trail took the overall team title, edging out the Lady Sharks by just two shots 321-323. In addition to Donovan and Berman, the post-season roster includes seniors Lauren Bryshell, Kelsey Lecker and Aleya Peete. The team heads to the State Regional Finals on October 22 in Lake City at Quail Heights.
