Cross Country:

Ponte Vedra High School hosted it annual Cross Country Invitational Saturday morning with almost 800 runners and the show went on despite nighttime rains drenching the course.  Over 26 teams from across North Florida ran in wet, muddy conditions which made an exciting event for spectators.  Athletes were covered in mud as they finished the 5K race and battled for position on the home stretch toward the finish line. Four races were held throughout the morning in cooler temperatures which was welcomed over the typical heat the athletes usually endure. The soggy course did not stop Ponte Vedra Teams from dominating the meet and taking home two new school records.

The morning started when Coach Kerry Mowlams' Ponte Vedra Boys Varsity Squad ran to a second place overall finish out of 24 Varsity Teams. Crisman Jones lead the way with a 5th place out of 195 athletes with Dustyn Johnson at his heels in 6th place. JP Mauriello and Connor Schramm were not far behind and Frank Blumenfeld followed to seal the 2nd place victory. The strong performances was enough to make a new Ponte Vedra Boys Team School Record. The top five Varsity Boys celebrated their last home meet as all will be graduating this year.  Bartram Trail Boys took the first place honors.

The Girls Varsity Squad, lead by Coach Amy Schottel, also ran for a new girls team school record and proved that they will be a formidable competitor at this years FHSAA District Championship on October 26 at Ridgeview High School.  With over 165 varsity girls competing, Bella Poole and Ashley Carpenter ran for an impressive sixth and 7th place with Abby Reimer and Casey Boland also taking ribbons for being in the top 25 runners. Courtney Henderson pulled in the final points for the team. Only sophomore Abby Reimer will return next season. The girls also took home a 2nd place overall finish with Providence School taking the first place prize and district rival Nease taking 3rd.

The excitement continued as the Boys Junior Varsity Team took another second place PV award. With over 221 JV Boys racing, Andrew Kessler had a strong race taking home a 5th place ribbon   Tyler Lowery and Perry Bechtle were right behind with 7th and 8th. Andrew, Tyler and Perry ran impressive times that were faster than many varsity runners showing the depth of talent of the JV team. Brett Greene, Palmer Mowlam, Johnathon Fennell and Mahi Sankar  also ran some of the best times this season. Bishop Kenny High School took first place while Johns Creek and Bartram Trail ran for third and fourth.

It seemed the morning could not get any better for Ponte Vedra when the girls JV Lady Sharks broke the days 2nd place school trend by happily taking home first place honors.

Kerri Wonsock, Alexa Burch, Stephanie Stroupe and Madison Santore all walked away with ribbons for placing in the top 15 runners.  Grace Kellaher, Caroline Bing and Fallon Farrell were not far behind to round out the JV squad.

Teen Driving Course
The St. Johns County School District is pleased to announce its partnership with the St. Johns County Tax Collectors Office to offer the Teen Defensive Driving course at all high schools in the district. This 28-hour program focuses on teaching students to be a defensive driver with knowledge of the laws that relate to the operation of a motor vehicle and safe driving procedures.  The "behind the wheel" training includes braking, backing, parking and lateral control movements. Once a student can safely control a motor vehicle, 20 additional hours will be spent with other students driving on a variety of roadways, including I-95, with a certified instructor.
The reduced cost of the Teen Defensive Driving Program is $200 with a 10 percent discount for students who acquired their Learner Permit through their high school's course. Scholarships are also available for students who qualify for free or reduced lunch programs.

For schedule information or to register, go to www.sjctax.us/DriverEducation.aspx or contact Ricky McIntyre at rmcintyre@sjctax.us or 904-209-2298.
