Bolles Invitational:
Three PVHS divers attended the Bolles Invitational on Saturday, September 14th.  The diving portion of the meet drew nearly 40 top divers, from high schools all over the state.  Meg Barnhorst was the top PVHS diver finishing 13th with a total score of 193.5.  Lora Frazier finished 19th with a total score of 173.3 and Pressley Pratt finished 29th with a total score of 127.2.

Cross Country:
This weekend your Shark XC teams traveled to Lake City for the Alligator Lake Invitational, joining 55 other teams and over 1600 runners on the course that will hold this year's Regional 3A meet.  In spite of key runners on both the boys and girls teams being unavailable due to ACT testing or injuries, the Sharks came with high expectations and boy, did they deliver the finest team and personal performances in the history of Ponte Vedra Cross Country!  Of the 44 runners who competed, all but 3 had either season or career best performances. The school now has a new Varsity Boys AND Varsity Girls Team School Record and a new Girl's Individual School Record!

The  Lady Sharks Varsity set the tone early as the sun came up  on race day with senior Bella Poole shattering her old PV school record by 27 seconds in her best race of her career here at PV, running 19:31 for 5000 meters. Bella finished 5th out of over 400 varsity runners to lead the Lady Sharks to an 8th place finish out of 33 varsity squads. Not only did Bella beat her previous school record, the Varsity team took home a new team record themselves!  Bella lead the pack and senior Casey Boland, coming back from a sprained ankle, had her best performance of the year to finish 38th overall. Sophomore Abby Reimer and senior Courtney Henderson continued their fine running this year with personal bests and juniors Sarah Lindell, Kerri Wonsock and Alexa Burch all had breakout career and season best performances. Freshman Madison Santore had her first varsity appearance with a season best time proving that she has a promising future as a Lady  Shark. Stephanie Stroupe and Kim Halbert rounded out the varsity squad with their own season best performances.

Inspired by the varsity squad, but having to deal with much warmer temperatures due to a later start time, the JV Lady Sharks never- the- less fought the conditions with 6 out of 7 personal records. Leading the Lady Sharks was junior Grace Keller in 27th place overall as she ran her personal best. She was followed by freshman Caroline Bing who had her own PR for the season. Rounding out the JV squad was freshman Madison Cooper, Mollie Bondra and Kelly Crolius who all scored points for the JV team and had a personal best performance.

Feeding off the girls performance, and not to be outdone, the boys varsity executed Coach Mowlam's "go slow early to go fast strategy"  to a tee and knocked 21 seconds off the schools overall team record average, running a 17:37 team average time for 5000 meters. Senior Dustyn Johnson came within 3 seconds of the PV boys varsity  school record and ran the second best time in PV history with a  time of 16:37 claiming 27th out of 300 runners in a race that had the, who's who, or the top runners in the state competing. Senior Crisman Jones became the 3rd fastest runner in PV XC history and just missed breaking into the 16"s with a 17:02 finish. Seniors JP Mauriello and Frank Blumenfeld also had PRs as did  Andrew Kessler, Perry Bechtle, Evan Weiner, Tyler Lowery, Brett Greene, and Johnathon Fennell all with SB or PRs

The boys JV also ran a very controlled race and as a result all but one runner had a personal record. The sharks were led by sophomores Mahi Sankar and Palmer Mowlam, followed closely by a pack of fast closing sharks including Nathan Worrell, Dylan O'Shea, Greg Kearney, Carson Foster and Kevin Kellaher.

Congratulations to all the athletes, Coach Amy Schottel, Coach Kerry Mowlam and Coach John Messinger on such a fine performance.

Next week your XC team is hosting the Ponte Vedra XC Invitational here at PV starting at 7:30 Saturday morning.  Over 30 teams will be in attendance here on our campus so come on out and cheer on your Sharks and let them know you are supporting their efforts.

Girls' Golf:
The Lady Sharks Girls Varsity Golf Team is off to a great start, boasting a 5-1 record with wins over Nease, Providence, Creekside and Clay Bucholz (Gainesville) -- to whom it avenged it's 10-shot away loss by handing out a 27-shot win at home.  Proving a talented team with depth all the way through the lineup, this season has seen all five of the "starters" earn medalist honors, including seniors Lauren Brychelle and Aleya Peete, juniors Nicolette Donovan and Cynthia Navis and sophomore Hannah Berman, who just joined the team as a transfer from Bolles.  The complete roster includes Nicolette Donovan, Cynthia Navis, Hannah Berman, Lauren Brychell, Aleya Peete, Sara McKevitt, Heidi Mathe, Kelsey Lecker, Ellie Lecker, Julie Snow, Jenna West and Theresa Irwin.  Coach Finlay and the girls would like to extend a thank you to Greg Lecker and his staff at Sawgrass Country Club for graciously allowing them to play and practice at his facility.  Sawgrass Country Club is a great home course!  You can find the girl's schedule on the website and they encourage you to come out and watch them play.  With big matches coming up against Providence, Bolles and Episcopal the team is just getting started as it gears up for the post-season.

Teen Driving Course
The St. Johns County School District is pleased to announce its partnership with the St. Johns County Tax Collectors Office to offer the Teen Defensive Driving course at all high schools in the district. This 28-hour program focuses on teaching students to be a defensive driver with knowledge of the laws that relate to the operation of a motor vehicle and safe driving procedures.  The "behind the wheel" training includes braking, backing, parking and lateral control movements. Once a student can safely control a motor vehicle, 20 additional hours will be spent with other students driving on a variety of roadways, including I-95, with a certified instructor.
The reduced cost of the Teen Defensive Driving Program is $200 with a 10 percent discount for students who acquired their Learner Permit through their high school's course. Scholarships are also available for students who qualify for free or reduced lunch programs.

For schedule information or to register, go to www.sjctax.us/DriverEducation.aspx or contact Ricky McIntyre at rmcintyre@sjctax.us or 904-209-2298.
