Cross Country:
Your Sharks XC teams headed to Bishop Kenny on Saturday Night to join over 50 other teams and almost 1600 runners in one of the largest and most competitive XC meets of the year. With 9 of the top 15th ranked girls teams in the state and 7 of the top 15 for the guys in attendance, this was a good test for our Sharks on a nice evening and festive environment.

Our lady Sharks end up in 11th place out of 48 Varsity teams with over 400 Varsity runners  and were led by seniors Bella Poole in 18th and Ashley Carpenter in 22nd place,  proving our dynamic senior duo can run with the best girl runners in the state.  Sophomore Abby Reimer along with seniors Casey Boland and Courtney Henderson all ran strong races with excellent times to round out the scoring for the Sharks Varsity in meet so large the Varsity races had to be split into 2 races, our own Lady Sharks qualifying for the Elite race.

In the men's Varsity race, your Sharks took 12th out of 49 Varsity teams, once again led by seniors Dustyn Johnson in 31st place and Crisman Jones in 43rd place, quite a nice job when you consider 793 athletes completed the three boy's races that evening. Seniors JP Mauriello, Frank Blumenfeld and Connor Schramm all came through with clutch performances as our varsity team was down to the minimum 5 runners needed for scoring due to injuries of other key runners. The Varsity boys also qualified to run Elite.

Both our JV teams followed up last week's strong performances with even better efforts this week, With a half mile to go our boy's JV team was at best in overall 5th place but strong finishing efforts down the stretch allowed our JV team to pass approx. 40 runners and every other team except host Bishop Kenny to take home 2nd place hardware. With over 400 runners in this race, your Sharks were led by sophomore Andrew Kessler with an excellent 4th place overall finish, followed by senior Evan Wiener in 14th, junior Johnathan Fennel in 24th, freshman Perry Bechtle in 26th, junior Tyler Lowery in 31st, freshman Mark Davey in 40th and sophomore Palmer Mowlam in 58th to round our team scoring.

Our Lady JV team had another fine performance and finished 8th out of 38 teams with 432 runners finishing this race and this strong effort was led by juniors Alexa Burch in 25th place and Sara Lindell in 41st. Freshman Madison Santore was next in 48th, followed by senior Rachel Babcock in 54th junior Kimberly Halbert in 74th. Freshman Caroline Bing and junior Grace Kellaher rounded out the scoring for the JV lady Sharks.

Next week there will be a split squad with the Varsity heading to Gainesville for the UF Invitational and our JV squads competing in the Mandarin Invitational.

YMCA Youth In Goverment
Students motivated to learn more about how our state government works will want to sign up for the YMCA of Florida's First Coast Youth in Government program for 9-12 graders. The program provides students with the skills and confidence necessary for inspired leadership. A Parent and Student Informational Meetings will take place at The Palencia Club,  600 Palencia Club Drive on Thursday, September 12 at 6:30 PM. Weekly meetings will continue at The Palencia Club each Thursday from 6:30-8 PM September through February.

Since 1957, Florida Youth in Government has brought the best and brightest high school students to the State Capital for General Assembly in Tallahassee, to debate in the actual Senate and House chambers to learn responsible leadership in the American democratic process and to experience law making first-hand through five program areas: Legislative, Executive, Judicial, Lobbyist and the Press Corps.

This student-driven national program allows student to learn legislative protocol, formulate arguments and practice debate techniques by learning to "debate ideas not people". In the weeks leading up to the General Assembly, they will learn to draft, research and present a bill in order for it to become State law. Students will have an opportunity to travel to Tallahassee February 19- 21 to present the bill they have worked on. Over 700 Florida students experienced Youth in Government in Tallahassee this past February.

Involved students are routinely rewarded with scholarships, college credit, community recognition and most importantly the self-awareness and confidence to be leaders. Junior Youth in Government for Middle School students will begin February 27th.

The cost of the program is $60 (which includes all materials, transportation, overnight lodging & meals at YMCA's Camp Wewa for the Fall District Conference, and a  tee shirt), with additional fees for the Tallahassee trip. Registration form may be downloaded from http://www.firstcoastymca.org/explore/youth_in_government

For more information, please contact Leslie Cook at (904)278-9622 ext. 213 or email lcook@firstcoastymca.org. Visit Florida's First Coast YMCA at www.firstcoastymca.org  and the state website at www.floridayig.net.
