beginningGreetings gentle readers!

I hope that spring is finding you with it's warm breezes.  Pleasant as spring may be, it holds danger for our equine partners with the risk of laminitis, a serious metabolic condition brought on by the high sugar content in spring grass. Our equine therapist Cloud has been affected and is currently on sick leave. Please send healing thoughts his way as he recovers!

Our newsletter explores the healing power of horses for emotional wellness in humans. Whether your wish is to learn more about equine-facilitated psychotherapy and learning, experience it yourself through an individual session or personal growth workshop, or develop your skills in facilitating the process of EFPL, you'll find valuable information and connections in this issue's featured publications, presentations and events.

EFPL offers a very potent avenue of healing and personal growth which reliably produces profound positive changes for the participants. The horses demonstrate a non-calculated and casual ability to touch each heart in a unique way. How do they do it? As long as I have been in practice I never stop learning from them. They help trust in the process and in the unknown. Nature has a wisdom that transcends logic and planning, and horses can help us find and live in that wisdom. Enjoy and learn!

Gratefully,
Leigh

Webinar description:
The HEAL Model of Equine-Facilitated Psychotherapy and Learning (EFPL) is described as a foundational model for understanding EFPL. Using concepts from neuroscience, attachment psychology, and animal science, Shambo explains how a feeling-based bond with the horse lies at the heart of EFPL treatment for mental health. In the HEAL model, a six-stage process is used to successfully treat complex PTSD and other clinical disorders. Outcome research from actual client treatment is reviewed in support of this model.

Leigh Shambo, MSW, LMHC is a psychotherapist with a full time clinical practice in Washington State. She is also the founder and President of Human-Equine Alliances for Learning (HEAL), a non-profit that sponsors research on and equitable access to equine-facilitated psychotherapy. Through HEAL, Shambo offers professional EFPL Facilitator Training to qualified individuals world-wide. Through her research she is widely known as a pioneer in EFPL clinical practice and she recently released her first book, The Listening Heart: The Limbic Path Beyond Office Therapy.

*****  The Archeology of Mind by Jaak Panksepp & Lucy Biven

The Archaeology of Mind presents an affective neuroscience approach-which takes into consideration basic mental processes, brain functions, and emotional behaviors that all mammals share- the neural mechanisms of emotional expression. It reveals-for the first time-the deep neural sources of our values and basic emotional feelings. The book offers an evidence-based evolutionary taxonomy of emotions and a brand-new clinical paradigm for treating psychiatric disorders in clinical practice.

The Power of the Herd: A non-predatory approach to social intelligence, leadership and Innovation by Linda Kohanov

Linda Kohanov is beloved for her groundbreaking articulation of "the way of the horse," an experiential wisdom known to riders for centuries but little studied or adapted to off-horse use. Now Kohanov takes those horse-inspired insights on exceptional communication and leadership into the realms of our workplaces and relationships. Here we explore the benefits of "nonpredatory power" in developing assertiveness, fostering creativity, dealing with conflict, and heightening mind-body awareness.
