Here is some more "food for thought" which I am sending out in the months between my regular In The SpotLight newsletters. These are excerpts taken from past newsletters I have written that still have much relevance today.

I would love to guide and support you in working on this challenge. Please consider my Getting Over Stage Fright workshop and/or personal coaching if you would like my guidance in learning how to transform this fear. If you have already taken my workshop, please consider taking the workshop again if you need some further reinforcement in using the tools.

If you are interested in attending the workshop, the next one is being planned for January 16-17th, 2016. I encourage you to sign up as soon as possible so we are sure to hold a spot for you. I hope you will be able to join us for the workshop so you can have a strong start to the New Year and move your progress to a new level in 2016. You can find out more information about my workshop by visiting www.performanceanxiety.com/upcoming_workshop.htm.

If you want to do some personal coaching with me, please contact me directly at janetesposito@performanceanxiety.com. I would love to hear from you.

Enjoy the newsletter!

Warm regards,

A Wiser Way to Approach Fear and Anxiety

Most of us have predictable patterns of reacting to our fear and anxiety about public speaking or performing. We often try to resist and run from our fear and anxiety and judge ourselves very negatively for being so afraid. Or we may try to fight off the uncomfortable and scary feelings and sensations that make us feel we are losing control of ourselves. All of this happens in a very rapid, automatic, mostly unconscious, and highly conditioned way. It feels as though we are hijacked by our fear and anxiety and we go into fight or flight (or freeze) survival mode.

This highly reactive and conditioned way of responding to our fear and anxiety does not serve us well, though we often resort to it when we are feeling so vulnerable and threatened. Yet, it is this very pattern of negative conditioned reactivity that gives the fuel to our fear and anxiety and sends these feelings spiraling to greater heights and depths.

So, we must learn to practice a better way...a more conscious way...to respond. When I was at a retreat with Tara Brach recently, she spoke of a process of attending to all difficult and uncomfortable feelings that lead us to feel vulnerable and overwhelmed. She used the acronym RAIN to name the process and described it as follows:

R - Recognize what is going on inside of you - this means to step into more of a detached, observer stance and note (in a matter-of-fact kind of way) what is happening without all of the emotional reactivity, negative judgment, and storyline that gives it the power to overwhelm.

A - Allow and Accept what is happening - this means that no matter how difficult and uncomfortable the feelings are, you give them permission and space to be there rather than judge or shame the feelings (and yourself) as wrong, bad, stupid, or ridiculous. You can certainly acknowledge to yourself that it is not your preference to have these difficult and uncomfortable feelings and, at the same time, not fight the reality that the feelings are there. Imagine relaxing and softening the edges around these feelings and allow them space to move through you without the obstruction of inner tension and resistance tightening around these feelings.

I - Investigate what is going on and get to know your inner experience - this means to mindfully pay attention to your inner experience, including your body sensations, thoughts and beliefs, reflecting upon what is going on without getting lost in intellectual analysis or grim and scary stories about your inner turmoil. It is a nonjudgmental, curious look at what is happening, feeling compassion and care towards yourself as you explore your inner world.

N - Not Personal - this means seeing what is going on not as your own, unique personal drama (or deficiency) but, rather, as a universally shared human experience that happens for many human beings when we feel highly vulnerable, threatened, and feel as though we are losing control. It means learning to perceive the anxiety and fear as waves of experience that pass through you in an impersonal way rather than creating a story about yourself as having personal weakness or something to feel ashamed or embarrassed over.

Consider how you might use this RAIN process - either the process as a whole or parts of the process - to create a more conscious and effective way of responding to the fear and anxiety rather than reacting to it in a way that fuels it further.
