Porridge for Chess - Phiona Mutesi
Visiting VPC on May 18
In 2005, missionary Robert Katende, started a chess program for children in Katwe, Uganda, one of the country's poorest slums.
Phiona Mutesi attended just to get food, had never heard of the game chess, let alone played it. The short documentary, "The Queen of Katwe," shows the teen in her home in the slums of Kampala, Uganda and describes her journey from being homeless to becoming a global phenomenon, after earning the title of Woman Candidate Master at just 16 years old.

Phiona will be traveling throughout the country this spring, sharing her story and her staunch belief that Jesus is her savior. Phiona will join us on Youth Sunday, May 18. You don't want to miss this inspiring young woman.

 Looking for Ways to Connect at VPC? The Invitation to the Journey Class is a three-week class in a small group setting where you will hear from our pastoral staff and other church leaders about the unique attributes of our congregation and what we mean when we say "Becoming like Christ Together for the World."
