This year, we invite you to join us in CELEBRATING 25 YEARS OF LIFE! We are so very grateful to have been a part of the Austin area response to the AIDS epidemic since 1988.
Back then, there was little to do except give comfort against a disease that was a mystery, with unknown cause, treatment or cure. Thanks to incredible medical advances, brought about in part by people willing to stand up, come out and make an issue of deserving those advances, we have gone from helping people die to helping them live fuller, more productive lives. We are grateful to have clients from the 1980s still with us today.
Yesterday, we received an unsolicited affirmation from just such a beneficiary of our services, Client 829, who says in part "Thanks to the services provided by The Wright House I am still very much alive....An old curmudgeon like me can offer hope and proof that an HIV diagnosis is not a reason to give up but instead a reason to live your life fully and completely. Chase your dreams, make your life what you want it to be....In these tough economic times it is so very important continue to support The Wright House....Thank you... for your dedication to those of us who value you, appreciate you and would not be here without you."
Our many financial supporters have made such outcomes possible for 25 years. Here, we salute some of our most recent:
|
- The Shield-Ayres Foundation - Although based in San Antonio, the hand of the Shield-Ayres Foundation can be seen at work in nonprofits throughout Austin and surrounding areas, as well as in other parts of Texas and out-of-state. Currently supporting Case Management.
- Janssen Therapeutics - Supporting Case Management programs vital to clients' well-being.
- Austin Gay and Lesbian Pride Foundation - Formed in 2010, the Foundation is an all-volunteer organization dedicated to managing/organizing Austin's annual PRIDE celebration.

Chart from Giving USA 2012, The Annual Report
on Philanthropy for the Year 2011, Executive Summary
|
So...We have been around 25 years now. While we have always had generous individuals supporting us, dollar-wise, we have also been driven for the most part by governmental and quasi-governmental sources. We are now fortunate to be funded by several charitable foundations.
What may surprise you is this--generally speaking, 80% of nonprofit support comes from individuals! Not foundations, not corporations.
Now that's sustainability. When a nonprofit reflects this model, it will be around to continue its good works.
