THE RAVEN STEALS THE LIGHT

Before there was anything, before the great flood had covered the earth and receded, before the animals walked the earth or the trees covered the land or the birds flew between the trees, even before the fish and the whales and seals swam in the sea, an old man lived in a house on the bank of a river with his only child, a daughter. Whether she was as beautiful as hemlock fronds against the spring sky at sunrise or as ugly as a sea slug doesn't really matter very much to this story, which takes place mainly in the dark.
 
Because at that time the whole world was dark. Inky, pitchy, all-consuming dark, blacker than a thousand stormy winter midnights, blacker than anything anywhere has been since.
 
The reason for all this blackness has to do with the old man in the house by the river, who had had a box which contained an infinite number of boxes each nestled in a box slightly larger than itself until finally there was a box so small all it could contain was all the light in the universe.
 
The Raven, who of course existed at that time, because he had always existed and always would, was somewhat less than satisfied with this state of affairs, since it led to an awful lot of blundering around and bumping into things. It slowed him down a good deal in his pursuit of food and other fleshly pleasures, and in his constant effort to interfere and to change things.
 
Eventually, his bumbling around in the dark took him close to the home of the old man. He first heard a little singsong voice muttering away. When he followed the voice, he soon came to the wall of the house, and there, placing his ear against the planking, he could just make out the words, "I have a box and inside the box is another box and inside it are many more boxes, and in the smallest box of all is all the light in the world, and it is all mine and I'll never give any of it to anyone, not even my daughter, because, who knows, she may be as homely as a sea slug, and neither she nor I would like to know that."
 
It only took an instant for the Raven to decide to steal the light for himself, but it took a lot longer for him to invent a way to do so.
 
First he had to find a door into the house. But no matter how many times he circled it or how carefully he felt the planking, it remained a smooth, unbroken barrier. Sometimes he heard either the old man or his daughter leave the house to get water or for some other reason, but they always departed from the side of the house opposite to him, and when he ran around to the other side the wall seemed as unbroken as ever.
 
Finally, the Raven retired a little way upstream and thought and thought about how he could enter the house. As he did so, he began to think more and more of the young girl who lived there, and thinking of her began to stir more than just the Raven's imagination.
 
"It's probably that she's as homely as a sea slug," he said to himself, "but on the other hand, she may be as beautiful as the fronds of the hemlock would be against a bright spring sunrise, if only there were enough light to make one." And in that idle speculation, he found the solution to his problem.
 
He waited until the young woman, whose footsteps he could distinguish by now from those of her father, came to the river to gather water. Then he changed himself into a single hemlock needle, dropped himself into the river and floated down just in time to be caught in the basket which the girl was dipping in the river.
 
Even in his much diminished form, the Raven was able to make at least a very small magic -- enough to make the girl so thirsty she took a deep drink from the basket, and in so doing, swallowed the needle.
 
The Raven slithered down deep into her warm insides and found a soft, comfortable spot, where he transformed himself once more, this time into a very small human being, and went to sleep for a long while. And as he slept he grew.
 
The young girl didn't have any idea what was happening to her, and of course she didn't tell her father, who noticed nothing unusual because it was so dark -- until suddenly he became very aware indeed of a new presence in the house, as the Raven at last emerged triumphantly in the shape of a human boychild.
 
He was -- or would have been, if anyone could have seen him -- a strange-looking boy, with a long beaklike nose and a few feathers here and there. In addition, he had the shining eyes of the Raven, which would have given his face a bright, inquisitive appearance -- if anyone could have seen these features then.
 
And he was noisy. He had a cry that contained all the noises of a spoiled child and an angry raven -- yet he could sometimes speak as softly as the wind in the hemlock boughs, with an echo of that beautiful other sound, like an organic bell, which is also part of every raven's speech.
 
At times like that his grandfather grew to love this strange new member of his household and spent many hours playing with him, making him toys and inventing games for him.
 
As he gained more and more of the affection and confidence of the old man, the Raven felt more intently around the house, trying to find where the light was hidden. After much exploration, he was convinced it was kept in the big box which stood in the corner of the house. One day he cautiously lifted the lid, but of course could see nothing, and all he could feel was another box. His grandfather, however, heard his precious treasure chest being disturbed, and he dealt very harshly with the would-be thief, threatening dire punishment if the Ravenchild ever touched the box again.
 
This triggered a tidal wave of noisy protests, followed by tender importuning, in which the Raven never mentioned the light, but only pleaded for the largest box. That box, said the Ravenchild, was the one thing he needed to make him completely happy.
 
As most if not all grandfathers have done since the beginning, the old man finally yielded and gave his grandchild the outermost box. This contented the boy for a short time -- but as most if not all grandchildren have done since the beginning, the Raven soon demanded the next box.
 
It took many days and much cajoling, carefully balanced with well-planned tantrums, but one by one the boxes were removed. When only a few were left, a strange radiance, never before seen, began to infuse the darkness of the house, disclosing vague shapes and their shadows, still too dim to have definite form. The Ravenchild then begged in his most pitiful voice to be allowed to hold the light for just a moment.
 
His request was instantly refused, but of course in time his grandfather yielded. The old man lifted the light, in the form of a beautiful, incandescent ball, from the final box and tossed it to his grandson.
 
He had only a glimpse of the child on whom he had lavished such love and affection, for even as the light was travelling toward him, the child changed from his human form to a huge, shining black shadow, wings spread and beak open, waiting. The Raven snapped up the light in his jaws, thrust his great wings downward and shot through the smokehole of the house into the huge darkness of the world.
 
The world was at once transformed. Mountains and valleys were starkly silhouetted, the river sparkled with broken reflections, and everywhere life began to stir. And from far away, another great winged shape launched itself into the air, as light struck the eyes of the Eagle for the first time and showed him his target.
 
The Raven flew on, rejoicing in his wonderful new possession, admiring the effect it had on the world below, revelling in the experience of being able to see where he was going, instead of flying blind and hoping for the best. He was having such a good time that he never saw the Eagle until the Eagle was almost upon him. In a panic he swerved to escape the savage outstretched claws, and in doing so he dropped a good half of the light he was carrying. It fell to the rocky ground below and there broke into pieces -- one large piece and too many small ones to count. They bounced back into the sky and remain there even today as the moon and the stars that glorify the night.
 
The Eagle pursued the Raven beyond the rim of the world, and there, exhausted by the long chase, the Raven finally let go of his last piece of light. Out beyond the rim of the world, it floated gently on the clouds and started up over the mountains lying to the east.
 
Its first rays caught the smokehole of the house by the river, where the old man sat weeping bitterly over the loss of his precious light and the treachery of his grandchild. But as the light reached in, he looked up and for the first time saw his daughter, who had been quietly sitting during all this time, completely bewildered by the rush of events.
 
The old man saw that she was as beautiful as the fronds of a hemlock against a spring sky at sunrise, and he began to feel a little better.

Souls 'have no colours'
 


Let's greet our dear friend Silver
Birch, who spoke for decades
at the Hannen Swaffer home circle. His medium was, of course,
Maurice Barbanell, the founding editor of "Psychic News" and editor
of "Two Worlds" for many years.

THEN Silver Birch welcomed a leading South African anthropologist who was present for the first time, the visitor said:
 
"I cannot tell you how grateful I am to be here. I have known about you for many years. I have been an admirer of you and your philosophy, and have known about your circle for many years.
 
"I want to tell you that having been to several countries in the last six weeks, I could never have dreamed that the night before my departure for home could have been so ardently blessed. I am profoundly thankful for this opportunity of being here tonight."
 
"I am very glad to have you here," said the guide. "It always makes my heart rejoice when I learn that I, as an instrument, have been able to help other people.
"You have knowledge of these truths. Your work shows you that no people, no nation, no country and no religion has the monopoly of the Great Spirit or the power of the spirit.
 
"Our concern is not with the colour of skins. This is purely physical - souls have no colours. There are no yellow souls, no red souls or no black souls. "All souls are equal in origin. Every soul is the reflection of the Great Soul, the Over-Soul, the Great Spirit, what you call God.
 
"Spiritually there are no barriers between any of the peoples in your world. The barriers are there geographically, physically or created by man.
 
"The colour of a skin or the fact of a nationality confers no superiority on people. Superiority can be attained only by service, by spiritual development, by mastery, by growth.
 
"So far as we are concerned, we see a vast human spiritual brotherhood in your world. We realise there is a common link that binds all together as members of one vast spiritual family."
 
The guide continued: "This is the lesson that your world has to learn, that we are all one in spirit.
 
"The whole purpose of earthly living is to serve, to help one another, and in so doing to foster spiritual, mental and physical freedom. Slavery of any kind is wrong because it contradicts every principle of goodness.
 
"You have been privileged to have had your eyes opened, to have beheld the wonders of the larger life and what it has to offer you. In return, you have tried to help others as you were helped when you sought the way.
 
"There is no earnest, sincere cry from the heart that is unheard. There is an awareness in our world of every sincere desire to serve, uplift and to sustain others who are less fortunate than you are. Never be weary in well doing.
 
"You live in a land where there are many problems to solve. If the motive is to help, they can be solved without violence or bloodshed. But the motive must be sincere and to help others to gain in time what is their inalienable right.
 
"These are the precious truths which must be applied in your land as in other lands. I repeat them to you because you have a contribution you can make. If I have helped you, I am grateful. This is the whole purpose of my mission."
 
After a personal message Silver Birch said: "If ever you have a lingering doubt in your mind, pause and reflect on what has happened.
 
"You will always see that the finger of the spirit has pointed the way for you. Always this truth should be your foundation. Just as the way was pointed, it will be shown again.
 
"As I have said so many times, we can only do things in our way and in our time. We will play our part. We will not fail you. All we ask is that you play your part and do not fail us.
 
"Together we can bring light into dark corners. We can replace ignorance with knowledge, superstition with truth, sickness with healing and mourning with comfort.
 
"This is the whole reason behind the tremendous organisation in my world. Advanced beings of high estate, who return only to help, say that your world can learn how to get rid of its excrescences and be flooded with beauty.
 
"Thank the Great Spirit for this opportunity that we have to communicate with one another."
 
Answering a question about the anthropologist's scientific and literary work, the guide said: "You are being guided and helped. You need have no fear of what the morrow will bring forth. All your needs will be supplied."
 
Earlier, greeting two old friends, a healer and his wife, Silver Birch said: "As I have always told you, you are as welcome here as I know I am welcome in your home.
 
"I regard you with a fatherly affection and hope that you will accept being members of my growing family. You still have plenty of work to do," said the guide to the healer. "The plan, as I see it, continues to unfold."
 
The visitor mentioned that, not long before, he was asked to broadcast on healing.
 
This led Silver Birch to say: "Happenings like that are straws in the wind. They are the means by which the power of the spirit and its truths reach more people and souls are touched. "It may be a word that quickens the soul into activity and brings illumination because it is ready. When it is ready, it can begin to unfold its own latent divinity, so always be grateful when the opportunity comes for you to play your part."
 
The visiting healer put some of his problems to Silver Birch by saying: "Over a period, I have not been too content with the absent healing I have been doing.
 
"I feel that people write to me on rather a casual basis, so I am not quite sure if I get through to them.
 
"Should I continue with the absent healing? Is it doing any good? What should I do to improve it?"
 
Silver Birch replied: "Yes, you should continue with the absent healing which is just as effective as that done by the laying on of hands. The reason is simple. "Everyone who approaches you makes a link and creates a path along which the power of the spirit can travel to reach them.
 
"You cannot do any more, to use your phrase, to get through to them than you are doing by being available.
 
"Thus you become the transmitter, the catalyst for the spirit power that reaches out and the amalgam travels on that path to reach them.
 
"You can make it more effective only by increasing your receptivity, which in turn increases your attunement with the beings who co-operate with you. This is something that only time and effort can achieve.
 
"If you pause for a moment and look back, you will realise that you have attained a degree of attunement that never existed in the past. Would you accept that?"
 
"It is a degree I have never even contemplated," said the healer.
 
"With it comes a growing awareness. The next stage you will find is what I hear my instrument call a 'knowingness,' which is not good English, but conveys what is involved.
 
"So far as you are concerned, you are dealing with intangibles, imponderables. But these are infinite in their potentiality. "Adjustments have to be made according
to your capacity so that the greatest possible force emerges that can be used for those who are sick.
 
"All we ask is that you do your best. We will do our best and together we will help souls who have nowhere else to turn.
 
"But if they do not respond, you are in no measure to blame. That is their problem, not yours. If they fail to respond it means they are not spiritually ready. "These matters are determined by the operation of spiritual laws. It is not possible, nor is it desirable, that every healer should be able to cure all the individuals who seek his aid.
 
"They receive according to their capacity. The adjustment is always perfect because it is spiritually measured. Just go on: you are on the right path."
 
Here, the healer asked, "Would you say it was true that all the patients who come are helping me to fulfil myself?"
 
Silver Birch replied: "Yes, and it is a two-way process. You help them and they are helping you, just as I strive to help and you help me when I come here. "This is the law of co-operation always in operation. The spirit works through harmony, cooperation and good will. "Whenever you find a sick person has been made well, rejoice. If any kind of spiritual awareness has come to these sufferers as a result, that is a cause for even greater rejoicing because it is far more important than healing physical bodies.
 
"You are co-operating with the Great Spirit. You are the channel for a divine power to achieve its purpose.
 
"This is far greater than anything that the conventional, traditional, orthodox churches can do because the power of the spirit is not welcomed by them. "Be accessible. Be available. Do the best you can. Because you have seen it happen, you know that we always give service for service and you have nothing to worry about."
 
Answering a comment made by somebody else, Silver Birch said: "No instrument should promise, 'I can heal you' or say, 'My guide can heal you.'
 
"This is not the way it works. What we will do in any circumstances is the best that we can, but we are governed by conditions. However sincere instruments may be they are not infallible. They can make mistakes.
 
"We are not infallible and can make mistakes. There is only one infallibility, the Great Spirit, because the natural laws are perfect and cannot make any errors."

RECIPROCITY & RESOLVE



We enter the final phase of fall's transition into winter prepared to take up our responsibilities and be practical as well as productive. Remember the inner child as the air chills and we wend our way to its grown-up doorway at the solstice. Persistence is strong; we can separate ourselves more easily from what we must let go and change our mind's strictures so more is possible. Self-determination becomes more effective as we progress inch by inch around blind corners. The need to simplify comes natural.
 
We find that living with fear has resulted in character development. The ability to choose our battles will become critical but Vesta will help us walk away from the right ones. Venus in Scorpio increases sensitivity and stirs up emotional depths also activates magnetic attraction. In the first week of December a pressure release valve will let go. Please remain steady until the explosion-proof-resonating-horn sounds an all clear. Mercury in Capricorn will help us with a "keep calm and carry on" sensibility.
 
Juno is a tempest at the best of times and in Scorpio it can be at its most dramatic and demanding best. Relationships, partnerships, contracts, agreements, karmic bonds and ancestral if not karmic issues are in focus. Justice, equality, fairness and honesty are important. Quickened high energy sustains a busy and continued chaos. Breakthroughs, brilliant strategies, exciting insights, tipping points and turning points are some highlights of the month. Overall we are curiously restless. We are seeking variety while carving out new pathways.
 
The remnants of patriarchal oppression will be resolved but the new patriarchal feminism poses a problem that can get out of hand. A meeting of many brilliant just and integral minds will evolve such things as corporate involvement, the legal or educational systems and the institutions of government and politics. Our attentions turn to what is possible, where growth and development can be served and we turn away from the negative event field of the past.
 
Many of us will get on a roll, others will still be disentangling themselves from inexplicably snags and a growing incompatibility sets us apart from that which is not meant to be. The month ends on very lucky, fortuitous, beneficial and opportunistic energies that are excellent for building toward prosperity again.

22ND The Sun gallops into freedom-loving Sagittarius but immediately runs into the barbed wire fencing of privatisation-in-the-parklands. Serious concerns will meet us at the gate, or it will be our new objectives that will be our first priority. Being impeded forges the steel of intention. If we have neither serious concern nor new objective then we can jump the fence happy-go-lucky. With responsibilities and communications attended to our spirits are raised by optimism. We are free to play, be spontaneous, follow our curiosities and find some fun. Momentum is lively, distractions can be many. Those without care or concern will find a quick wit will get carried away, go overboard, or speak without forethought. Too much enthusiasm and optimism jumps the gun and is quick to form assumptions and conclusions. If we have our blinders on we will miss the turn and be unable to correct our course. Steady as it goes!
 
The Gibbous Moon is a magnet for information gathering. Great opportunities will open up, karma will be dissolved and purposeful promise will then be acted upon. We make headway toward our intended destiny. Where there has been injury, pain and woundedness there will be learning and repair. We touch base with our ancestral memories and uncover family secrets. But there is deviousness and deception afoot at the same time so please be wary of astral spirits and lower entity human beings. Strong ambitions guide people and it is every man for himself and woman for herself in those circumstances. The baton of karma is passed from one person to another. As we complete our tasks we earn our grace and synchronicity creates the circumstances that tag the next person to carry the baton. Others take up the task of carrying that same baton because of the consequences of their actions. This person or persons will be in league with its burden. We have no part to play other than letting go for we have learned and earned the right.
 
23RD We nurture children but they also nurture us. Our playfulness and imagination will nourish our wellbeing. We will also find fantasy ideas to be fulfilling. Gently sort out idealisms, sympathies and unrealistic ideas. Apply compassion by volunteering for worthy causes. Being too sympathetic is the pitfall of these energies; caring can be undeserved. Not recognising that someone is draining a hole that cannot be filled creates unfortunate circumstances. Do not slide into situations because of idealistic aspiration. Escape mechanism, dietary allergies and poor nutrition are ailments that need to be addressed.
 
Circumstances and situations are making it easier to separate from things that are not working. We can also attend to things that cannot be left undone. Feeling more disciplined and responsible we take on hard physical and mental work. Persistence is strong; good for starting a course, diet or exercise program. We are more in touch with our bodies and can feel what maintenance it needs. Maturity of purpose increases our focused priority. We can make long range plans now that we know the score. Passions are channelled by self-motivation and work.
 
24TH The lines and boundaries get blurred; we cannot maintain an impermeable stance. There is a good and difficult side to consider. In this condition things become questionable because of overanxious, unrealistic and hasty conclusions. Psychosomatic conditions create inhibition and maladjustment or flights into escape or fantasy. We flounder if we cannot tap into the intuitive flow of calm continuance with no expectation. That would be the good side. Be careful with machinery, driving or working with sharp tools and implements. We get irritated with the little things that are normally very easy to do. Take extra time. Emotions can be psychically draining and lead to low energy. Pull up from emotional nose dives. Safe sex is imperative to avoid stds. Our judgement in that department can become questionable.
 
We need to believe in ourselves and be self-determining. Follow someone who is a good role model or aspire to be one. Self-worth, self-confidence and independence are linked to a positive identity. Children may need to make their own decisions. It is very hard to stand back and let them grow into themselves. It is hard to feel effective right now but the effort we are making is restorative and resituating. Nurture the self through physical exercise, martial arts disciplines or team play. Energy and action are nourishing. Enjoy the boost. Take up a program to get lean and mean...well fit as a fiddle; at least feeling better. It is possible to take parenting too far. It is possible for a child to make unwarranted demands of a parent. Mostly it is the end of one phase and the beginning of another in the parent/child relationship.
 
25TH No matter what is happening around you, keep taking steps forward. Even if you cannot see the path ahead, make progress inch by inch. The illusion of limitation has become intensified in our individual electrical field. We are meant to break free of the thin lining keeping us back. There is an ethereal counterpart to this veil that is more permeable. It allows us to tune into other dimensions and collective wisdom. Free things up, manage the flaws, choose the unconventional path and make every decision one that will create the future.
 
The Full Moon has a high degree of karmic activity contained within it. We cannot help but work on our evolutionary purpose. We are released from reincarnational patterns and set free. At this point we can be faced with two things. Either there is a lot of work to do or we receive a lot of rewarding end result. Positive partnerships can be formed for business purposes. Financial needs will be met with not much more to spare but do not worry. If someone has planted the seed of deception they may be watching for it to hatch so it can grow. Do not throw water or fertiliser on such ill begotten kernels of harmful mischief. Do not feed gossip, rumour or dispersion of another's character. Criticism gets too carried away and it has a boomerang affect.
 
26TH  Simplify everyday life, question everything, believe nothing is static; move through disappointment, discouragement or pessimism. We may take things too seriously, give into negative states of mind and doubt the ability to reach goals and ambitions. Uncertainty, confusion, unclear objectives and the inability to cope with the overwhelming cloud of insecurity will envelope us if we let this happen. Ideals can be shattered if they will not withstand the test of time. Let it go if it wants to. Accept that it will not come back. It does not belong. The dissolving of structure or set up can in many cases be a welcome and positive result. We can be allowed to move on.
 
27TH The stationing of Chiron releases the last of the inner conflict it has in store. As it prepares to move direct we deal with microscopic issues. Once it is direct we will no longer inflict ourselves with wounds or stir up the pain of the past. We can pull the key elements of our life together, repair and improve it more swiftly without limitation. More in touch with the external world we can see the big picture. Learning to live with fear has resulted in character development.
 
29TH The Disseminating Moon will dispense some constructive criticism.We might not be ready to hear it but it is good for us. The ground may shake under our feet as life changing realisations become our property. We cannot mistake the message and the impactful influence it has.
