Come for STEM  Stay for MINECRAFT
Minecraft logo
Minecraft is the incredibly popular game which ties in well with this summer's Beneath the Surface theme. "The creative and building aspects of Minecraft allow players to build constructions out of textured cubes in a 3D procedurally generated world. Other activities in the game include exploration, gathering resources, crafting and combat."

Brent Loffreto will also present information and ideas on Minecraft at the April 4 workshop.

Authors Unlimited is Looking for Teen Volunteers

Applications for Teen Volunteers are due Friday March 22.  Here is what teens have said about the experience:

"People say it all the time, but honestly that was the best day of my life."

"Author's Unlimited was one of the most memorable days of my high school career!

It was an all-around great experience for volunteers, authors and visitors and I cannot wait for next year's program."

Two Totally Different Heroines

There has already been a great deal of buzz about Alaya Dawn Johnson's debut YA novel The Summer Prince. June Costa falls in love with the Enki. Together they explore daring new art and discover hidden government secrets. June is not the only one captivated by Enki's charms. The country falls in love with the ruler who will be sacrificed to the Gods at the end of the year.
Set in a futuristic Brazil, Johnson creates an exotic world with a dazzling facade which obscures deep fissures and hidden secrets.
Here's the exciting news: Alaya will be a featured author on April 27 for Authors Unlimited. She will be able to offer insights into the amazing world of Palmares Tres.

Gail Carriger's Etiquette and Espionage is one of those books that is so much fun to read. Sophronia has been sent to a Finishing School (there is a double entendre here) where she learns the proper way to curtsy and counterintelligence, while encountering robotic pets, vampires, and an steampunk airships.
The writing is witty. Here is
sample: "How it worked? What kind of a question is that for a young lady to ask? How often have I warned you against fraternizing with technology?"
Enjoy a proper cup of tea in your best bone china cup while you savor the delights of Flywaymen, mechanimals, and the correct way to bat one's eyelashes.

Thinking Beyond the 3 D Printer

3 Doodler
3 Doodler
While 3 D printers are all the rage, there are other Maker projects that have interesting implications for libraries. Take a look at this 3 Doodler.  This looks like a concept that might work well for youth projects and programs.
Lucille Bear and Bad Kitty on the Road
Snow people in Mattituck-Laurel
Bad Kitty and Lucille Bear headed out to Mattituck-Laurel and Floyd Memorial Libraries for a afternoon of fun on the North Fork.
They managed to sneak inside the snow photo props and were having so much fun that it took Lisa and Barbara some effort to extract them. They love to steal the show!!

But it was all good because Lisa and Barbara had a wonderful time exploring two great libraries.

You can read more on the Montauk to Melville blog.
