Teen Direct
from the Suffolk Cooperative Library System February 2013 |
|
This book is simply scrumptious. The characters are delightful and the tale, told through through their interwoven stories, is satisfying and delicious. But there is a bonus: fabulous recipes! Can you resist Marigold's Lime Pound Cake, Will's S'more Cake, Miss Mallory's Peach Cake, or Cady's Almond-Cherry-Cake? These confections and several other tempting recipes will have readers heading for the mixing bowls and heating up the oven.
Reading Lisa Graff's A Tangle of Knots inspires thoughts of book and food parings, such as The Wednesday Wars and cream puffs. Think of a food and book pairing that seems especially appropriate and post it on our Facebook page. One lucky librarian who posts will win this delectable galley, along with some reading-friendly treats.

 | Kudos to Port Jefferson Free Library |
Port Jefferson Free Library was named the 2012 Educator of the Year by the Village of Port Jefferson. Accompanied by photos of the library's Study Buddy and Teen Green Team programs, director Robert Goykin and local residents extol the value of their community library. "John Kelsch, a Port Jefferson resident and father, said he encourages his 12-year-old son to participate in library programs. 'It's a safe, clean, caring environment for him,' Kelsch said when he stopped by to return a few books."

Teens Become Part of the Solution
|
Mastics Moriches Shirley Community Library's incredible literacy program includes teen volunteers who read to youngsters and play board games with them while their parents attend classes to learn English. This program so popular that it requires an entire wing of classrooms at the William Floyd High School to accommodate all attendees..
This is a win-win-win. Parents learn English. Kids get personal attention while reading books. Teens get community service hours.
|
Anime Manga Art Show |
The Huntington Station Branch of the Huntington Library has a thriving Anime-Manga Club. Originally organized as program for teens to enjoy reading and viewing anime and manga, the group has expanded to include an art component for those who enjoy creating their own art.
They recently celebrated their accomplishments with an art show. Work by individual members was enlarged to create wall posters. This group of young artists have created some thoughtful and engaging works of art. Congratulations to the teens and the library staff on an excellent show.

Time for 2013 Books! | Jennifer E Smith, author of the wildly popular The Statistical Probability of Love at First Sight has a terrific new title that is sure to be a hit with all Chick Lit aficionados. This is What Happy Looks Like is the story of Ellie, who inadvertently connects online with teen film star Graham.
When heart-throb Graham's latest movie begins filming in Ellie's small hometown, the two must navigate the stormy waters of a relationship as it progresses from virtual to in-person. Filled with humor, warmth, and just the right amount of romance, this story delivers exactly what the cover promises: a sweet slice of happy.
Sally Gardner, author of The Red Necklace takes readers on an exploration of a futuristic society with echos of the Nazi Germany and Cold War. The Motherland has relocated Standish Treadwell and his grandfather to Zone Seven, far away from the Mothers of Purity. One day Standish and his friend Hector discover the dark secret which the government is hiding. Maggot Moon's chilling narrative is complimented by a second story line, told through page art that follows a small fly throughout its own gruesome tale. Be sure to check out the author's interactive iBook page.
