Something Different
  Cardboard cover
It isn't often that a series  "jumps off the cart", but this Mixed Martial Arts series from Rosen dispells the "boring nonfiction" stigma of nonfiction series.
Each slim volume provides basic information and profiles stars of the sport. Here's the cool part: step-by-step photographs guide readers through basic moves, many with such intriguing names as:"guillotine", and "monk choke".
The back matter includes a glossary, more information, further reading, and an index.
This is a book that begs to be experienced!

Graffiti Moon cover Jerry Spinelli is at the top of his game with this absolutely enchanting story of leaving childhood, and knowing that it is time to go but still aching for the joys of playgrounds, bikes, ice pops and cartoons. Jack is king of the land of kids. He and his Amigos taunt girls, look down at the Newbies and Snotsippers, and roam the range of Hokey Pokey.
The language is so beautiful and lyrical, it begs to be read aloud. I don't think I will ever be able to look at a full moon and not think of a golden soccer ball.

Yes, my love for Stargirl will never go away.  But there is now a new place in my heart for Hokey Pokey.  What a treasure. I have an ARC.  Post a favorite memory of your childhood on Facebook and the joys of Hokey Pokey could be yours.

 Lucille Bear and Bad Kitty
Bad Kitty in the Mitten Tree
How did Bad Kitty find his way onto the Mitten Tree?

Bad Kitty and Lucille Bear paid a visit to Sachem Public Library, where teens hosted a mitten activity for young children: reading mitten books and supervising a mitten craft. This was a perfect compliment to the beautiful Mitten Tree on display. You can read more on the Montauk to Melville blog.

Book a visit with this winning team for a visit to your library today.

World Book Night logo  Mark your calendar for World Book Night: April 23, 2013.
World Book Night is currently accepting applications from individuals who would like to give away 20 copies of a selected title. Please read the guidelines carefully.

The list selection this year is diverse: everything from The Lightning Thief and  Looking for Alaska, to Bossypants and The Alchemist. There are titles for a variety of readers. Which one will you select to share?
 Picture This
Here are some really intriguing iPhone, iPad apps that will make sharing photos even more creative.

Threadlife allows you to share videos, similar to Instagram.  However, the videos are brief, only 3 seconds. You can then "stitch" your videos together to create a little "mini-movie".
Qwiki allows you to take six pieces of media, anything from a video to a map to voiceover for multimedia storytelling.
Photoset allows you to group sets of photos together, emphasizing specific photos. The finished set can have captions and links.  It will be published as a web page, with a unique URL.

 Hokey Pokey Bonus
World Book Night logo Jerry Spinelli's Hokey Pokey is a treasure box of delightful quotes.
Here is one for fun:
"But heck, the world is the world and boys are part of it, like flies. Without them, what would there be to swat."

Notice the difference in the book covers? The cover shown here is the cover for the galley - what you'll get if you win the Facebook contest. The cover shown above is the final cover.  Which is your favorite?
