Coastal Advocacy Group Becomes DU Life Sponsor

Louisiana Director of Development Bob dew recently presented a Ducks Unlimited Life Sponsor Award to Simone Maloz, Executive Director of the Louisiana coastal advocacy group Restore or Retreat (ROR.) ROR became a life sponsor through its $10,000 contribution to DU for the Bayou L;Ours Terracing Project in Lafourche Parish.  This habitat enhancement project, which will restore 130 acres of coastal marsh for wintering waterfowl, is being delivered by Ducks Unlimited with support from ROR, ConocoPhillips' Louisiana Land and Exploration Company, and the Lafourche Parish Government.

Regional Restoration Focus of ROR-NWF Summit

Restore or Retreat (ROR) and the National Wildlife Federation (NWF) hosted the "Third Summit on Coastal Restoration for Lafourche and Terrebonne" at Houma on November 6.  The Third Summit builds on our past efforts to connect NGO capacity with the restoration priorities, funding possibilities, and ongoing projects of these two parishes.   An inaugural summit in 2011 in Terrebonne Parish, and again at Nicholls State University in 2012.

"We were so pleased with the results of our first two regional summits, we knew we should make this an annual event," said Simone Maloz, Executive Director of Restore or Retreat.  "Once again, we were able to connect our region with interested and influential organizations that can help us advance our mission to save our irreplaceable region."

Over 60 participants heard presentations from the CPRA, NFWF, and Lafourche and Terrebonne Parishes.

The day began with NGO panelists, participants, and stakeholders hearing from parish coastal representatives Archie Chaisson III and Nicholas Matherne, who relayed restoration and funding priorities of Lafourche and Terrebonne Parishes, respectively.  The group of 60+ then heard from representatives from the Coastal Protection and Restoration Authority (CPRA) on the future of restoration in the State and current plans to implement the 2012 Master Plan in both Terrebonne and Lafourche Parishes, as well as post-spill funding possibilities that might be available to assist in financing.

The keynote luncheon speaker was Tanner Johnson, Director of the Gulf Environmental Benefit Fund of the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation (NFWF.) NFWF will receive nearly $2.4 billion over five years from BP as part of a $4 billion settlement negotiated by the U.S. Department of Justice to resolve federal criminal charges stemming from the 2010 Deepwater Horizon event.  Of those billions, $1.2 billion will go directly to Louisiana for barrier islands and river diversion projects, and Mr. Johnson is the key advisor of those funds.

The day concluded with NGO panelist delved into our theme "Get on the F.A.S.T. Track," referring to getting projects Funded, Aligned, in a Strategic and Tactical manner.  The groundwork was laid for many future discussions on how these NGOs and tactics they bring can support and propel these parishes restoration efforts forward.

Proven once again, now more than ever, we must continue to grow and foster relationships and partnerships like those created at the Third Summit, so we can continue to restore our coast, community and culture for many, many future generations.

Thank you for a successful event!!
