Captain Stanley Lord adamantly refused to believe that the ship that he and some members of his crew had seen in the distance during the evening of April 14,1912 had been the Titanic. Lord slept fitfully during the night, occasionally being roused by his second officer, who was concerned that the vessel was sending up rockets. The captain would be vilified for the rest of his life for his inaction. This is an intelligent, immaculately researched speculation centering around one of the most enduring mysteries involving the legendary lost ship.

Dear Friends,

As many of you know, the Northshire Bookstore is celebrating its 40th anniversary this year.  And as I reflect back on how we've changed and grown, I find myself thinking about the many, many staff members who have dedicated themselves to our mission of working to make the Northshire the best bookstore we can possibly be.  Erik Barnum, our Sales Floor Manager for almost 20 years, is certainly one of those people.  Erik and Liz came to us from Washington, D. C., where Erik was the manager of Sidney Kramer Books, and we immediately recognized a kindred soul in his approach to bookselling.  Erik quickly put his mark on the sales floor, welcoming customers, making friends, hiring and training new booksellers, and becoming an indispensable member of our greater community.  Many might not know that Erik is also a thespian, and over the years could be seen on stage in local productions. He also is a fisherman and kayaker and would often spend his vacations enjoying the beauty and solitude of our nearby lakes.  Erik has a hearty laugh and brought humor, a love of books, as well as years of bookselling experience to our customers' experience.
Erik's last day at the Northshire was about a month ago.  He is on to new adventures.  Erik will be missed by one and all, and we wish him all the best.

Happy Spring!

Join us for a presentation and performance from jazz historian and musician Bob Gluck.
Miles Davis's Bitches Brew is one of the most iconic albums in American music, the preeminent landmark and fertile seedbed of jazz-fusion. Fans have been fortunate in the past few years to gain access to Davis's live recordings from this time, when he was working with an ensemble that has come to be known as the Lost Quintet.
In this book, jazz historian and musician Bob Gluck explores the performances of this revolutionary group, Davis's first electric band, to illuminate the thinking of one of our rarest geniuses and, by extension, the extraordinary transition in American music that he and his fellow players ushered in. The result is a deeply attuned look at a pivotal moment when once-disparate worlds of American music came together in explosively creative combinations.
Gluck's presentation will include a piano performance of musical examples.

Blaine HardenNew York Times bestselling author of  Escape From Camp 14, tells the riveting story of Kim Il Sung's rise to power and the young North Korean fighter pilot who dared to defy him.
