Fortune Smiles
Fortune Smiles

Six superlative stories by the author of the Pulitzer Prize-winning Orphan Master's Son. Johnson's intriguing tales range from bittersweet recollections by the wife of the "biggest lunkhead to ever win a Pulitzer," to the sanitized memories of an East German prison guard, to a story set on familiar ground for this author, South Korea.

Greetings,

With all the violence directed at African Americans over the past couple of years, or rather, the publicizing of the ongoing violence, I was struggling to understand race relations in our country right now. And coming from the whitest state in the union, what does it mean for us? How do we even have a conversation about racism when most of us don't interact with people of color where we live, work and play?

It was with this in mind that I picked up Ta-Nehisi Coates' timely new book, Between The World And Me. Written as a letter to his son, the book is a description of Coates' evolution of thinking on race from the Baltimore streets to Howard University to his current reality as national correspondent for The Atlantic. It is a hard-hitting, face the facts window into the reality of being black in America. It is an exploration of the shock waves of slavery. It is a broader warning on the destruction wrought by hubris and the domination by default mindset. Between The World And Me is an important, beautifully written, and penetrating book that I highly recommend. If you are black and looking for articulation of your struggle, here it is. If you are white and looking for a starting point of understanding or conversation, here it is. This is not an easy book - but it is deeply human, totally raw and clearly the work of a keen intellect and a vulnerable observer of life, both internal and external.

Be well,

Chris

Jim Kaat, who has the unique experience of playing for the Yankees as well as calling games for them in the booth, had a prime seat to watch it all unfold. In this book, Kaat and Greg Jennnings provide a closer look at the great moments and the lowlights that have made the Yankees one of baseball's keystone teams.

In a Dark Wood
On a cold November morning, Joseph Luzzi, a Dante scholar and professor at Bard College, found himself racing to the hospital. His wife, Katherine, eight-and-a-half months pregnant, had been in a horrible car accident. In one terrible instant, Luzzi became both a widower and a first-time father.
In the aftermath of unthinkable tragedy, Luzzi relied on the support of his Italian immigrant family, returning to his childhood home to grieve and care for his infant daughter. But it wasn't until he turned to The Divine Comedy a Dante poem he had devoted his life to studying and teaching that he learned how to resurrect his life.

Now retired and living in Three Pines Inspector Gamache is asked to investigate the disappearance of a young boy known for telling annoying tall tales. Secondhand Souls Secondhand Souls
(Hardcover)
By Christopher Moore
$26.99
It seems like only yesterday that Charlie Asher took on a very dirty job collecting souls and keeping the Forces of Darkness at bay. The new gig came with the Big Book of the Dead and a host of other oddities: creatures under the streets, an evil trinity of ravenlike Celtic death goddesses, and one very bad Underworld dude attempting to conquer humanity. Along with a cohort of other oddballs, Charlie faced off against these denizens of darkness and met his own end. But thanks to Audrey, his Buddhist-nun boo, his soul is still alive . . . inside a fourteen-inch-high body made from lunchmeat and spare animal parts. Waiting for Audrey to find him a suitable new body to play host, Charlie has squirreled himself away from everyone, including his adorable seven-year-old daughter, Sophie, who enjoys dressing up like a princess, playing with her glitter ponies, and being the Luminatus spouting off about her power over the Underworld and her dominion over Death.
Reckless: My Life as a Pretender
Chrissie Hynde, for nearly four decades the singer/songwriter/ undisputed leader of the Pretenders, is a justly legendary figure.
Few other rock stars have managed to combine her swagger, sexiness, stage presence, knack for putting words to music, gorgeous voice and just all-around kick-assedness into such a potent and alluring package. From Tatooed Love Boys and Brass in Pocket to Talk of the Town and Back on the Chain Gang, her signature songs project a unique mixture of toughness and vulnerability that millions of men and women have related to. A kind of one-woman secret tunnel linking punk and new wave to classic guitar rock, she is one of the great luminaries in rock history.
Rising Strong
Rising Strong (Hardcover)
By Brene Brown,
$27.00
When we deny our stories, they define us. When we own our stories, we get to write the ending.
Social scientist Brene Brown has ignited a global conversation on courage, vulnerability, shame, and worthiness. Her pioneering work uncovered a profound truth: Vulnerability the willingness to show up and be seen with no guarantee of outcome is the only path to more love, belonging, creativity, and joy. But living a brave life is not always easy: We are, inevitably, going to stumble and fall. It is the rise from falling that Brown takes as her subject in "Rising Strong."
