The City
by Andrew Savulich

A remarkable collection of street photographs that perfectly capture the unique character of a New York City that doesn't exist any longer. In the years between 1980 and the mid-90s, the city was awash in a wonderful sleaziness, but the flashpoint violence that often splayed blood over the dirty sidewalks was a constant reminder of the danger lurking there. Mr. Savulich's camera records the horror and the heartbreak with a gritty immediacy that is frequently shocking and totally unforgettable.

Get to know the publisher: Penguin and Random House have merged. Read about great milestones in the histories of Penguin and Random House, here

Allen Lane, the founder of Penguin Books, wanted a 'dignified but flippant' symbol for his new business. His secretary suggested a Penguin and another employee was sent to London Zoo to make some sketches. Seventy years later Penguin is still one of the most recognizable brands in the world.

The Random House imprint made an impressive debut in 1928 with a beautifully bound edition of Candide by Voltaire. In the wake of the collapse of the stock market only a year later, Random House began focusing on trade publishing, the market for fine editions having all but vanished. Random's Modern Library imprint, with books selling at less than one dollar each, helped the company to survive the Depression.

Dear Friends,

As all of you who frequent the Northshire Bookstore know, we have a wonderful staff of booksellers, as well as people behind the scenes (buyers, receivers, bookkeepers, event coordinators, graphic designers, and others) who are passionate about books. And what we love most of all is when someone comes into the store, and asks what is the best book you've read lately. One of our booksellers in Saratoga, Amelia Stymacks  - who has been with us since that store opened almost two years ago - was so passionate about A Little Life, by Hanya Yanagihara, that not only did she recommend it to all of her fellow booksellers - a number of whom immediately read it and were as passionate about it as she was - she contacted the author and in a phone interview delved into what went in to the writing of the novel, how she created the characters, what it was like to leave the story behind, and really got to the core of the author's relationship to her book. Here are Yanagihara's closing remarks:

"The only other thing I wanted to say is that I am so touched, honored, and humbled by everything the indie booksellers - and Northshire in particular - have done for this book. I used to work in book publishing myself, and I know that bookseller enthusiasm is the thing that makes the house sit up and take notice: it's made all the difference for "A Little Life," and I am so grateful, daily, for your passion and advocacy. So thank you: it means everything." It is an amazing exchange between author and bookseller. Read the entire interview here.

I often hear customers say it is dangerous to come into the bookstore because it feels like an addiction, and I always respond that there are a lot worse. Those of us who are passionate about books are somewhat like evangelists. We want to spread the word.  Just ask Erik Barnum about Kent Haruf's exquisite new novel Our Souls at Night.

Have a wonderful summer, surrounded by your favorite books!

Best,

Barbara

New Books for June

Staff Pick! The Unfortunates (Hardcover), This first (I find it very hard to
believe) novel is about a year in the life of three members of a socially prominent family--matriarch, adult son, his wife. Money, class and madness, yes, and prose so good I shook my head in wonder. If you are the type of reader who underlines good sentences, forget it. There's not enough lead in your pencil.
The Unfortunates is a sensation. Reviewed by Stan Hynds
The Hidden History of America at War: Untold Tales from Yorktown to Fallujah (Hardcover),
By Kenneth C. Davis,
$30.00
Multi-million-copy bestselling historian Kenneth C. Davis sets his sights on war stories in The Hidden History of America at War. In prose that will remind you of "the best teacher you ever had" (People Magazine), Davis brings to life six emblematic battles, revealing untold tales that span our nation's history, from the Revolutionary War to Iraq. Along the way, he illuminates why we go to war, who fights, the grunt's-eye view of combat, and how these conflicts reshaped our military and national identity.
Staff Pick! Our Souls at Night
(Hardcover), By Kent Haruf, $24.00
This is a poignant story of two elderly people in a small town who, out of loneliness, decide to just sleep together, just talk and sleep in the same bed every night. Haruf's novel is understated, almost whispered, as he tells of the town's reaction and the pressure from her family to end the relationship. This bittersweet novel took me by surprise, I was unaware how invested I was with the characters until it was over, and I realized that this novel and it's people were going to linger with me for a good long while. Reviewed by Erik Barnum

Staff Pick! Dinner with Buddha (Hardcover)
The journey continues, taking Otto and Rinpoche on another road trip. Both physical and spiritual discovery drive the story, but the real meat of this novel is an understated series of lessons for living, dying and making sense of the world and one's place in it. Told with humor, wonder and wisdom, the reader is invited to experience the comfort of self knowledge and hope. Reviewed by Karen Frank
I Saw a Man (Hardcover)
By Owen Sheers, $25.95 An utterly stunning novel of love, loss, the insidious nature of secrets, and the enduring power of words."I Saw a Man"fulfills the promise of Owen Sheers's acclaimed novel, Resistance.
When journalist Caroline Marshall fails to return from assignment in Pakistan, her grief-stricken husband, Michael, leaves their cottage in Wales and returns to London where he quickly develops a friendship with his neighbors, Josh and Samantha Nelson, and their two young daughters. Michael's friendship with the Nelsons marks the beginning of a long healing process, until a terrible accident adds yet more grief, and the burden of a shattering secret.
Staff Pick, YA crossover! Uprooted (Hardcover),
Her whole life, Agnieszka has expected her best friend Kasia to be the girl chosen by the ancient wizard in the tower. She always thought he would take her away and, like all the other girls, Kasia would not return once her ten years was up. Agnieszka was wrong: the Dragon chose her instead. When she goes to live in his tower, she discovers her natural affinity for magic and witnesses firsthand the evil powers of the Wood, which she must help the Dragon stop before it destroys the kingdom. Readers will fall in love with not only Agnieszka, but the Dragon and Kasia too, and find themselves swept up in the natural magic of the Wood. Reviewed by Paige Mushaw

Children's Books

Staff Pick! The Octopuppy (Hardcover), By Martin McKenna, $16.99
Cartoony silliness captures an all-too-familiar childhood dilemma--you want one thing but get another. In Octopuppy, McKenna's Jarvis (the eclectic octopus) is the very epitome of this NOT THE PUPPY I WANTED phenomenon. Well-placed microexpressions balance Jarvis' wild eccentricities to create one of the weirdest, best-composed picture books of the year. Reviewed by Aubrey Restifo
Pip Bartlett's Guide to Magical Creatures (Hardcover), By Maggie StiefvaterJackson Pearce, $16.99 From bestselling authors Maggie Stiefvater and Jackson Pearce comes an exciting new series full of magical creatures, whimsical adventures, and quirky illustrations.
Staff Pick! Saint Anything (Hardcover), By Sarah Dessen, $19.99
Sydney is the "good kid," the one who has lived in her brother's shadow her whole life - idolized him until he got involved with drugs and alcohol and was arrested for paralyzing a boy while drunk driving. Now Sydney lives with the guilt of what her brother did, and with the short leash her parents have kept her on since. Dessen's most serious novel to date, Saint Anything will attract new readers and satisfy old fans with its thought-provoking premise, meaningful friendships, and lighthearted romance. ~ Reviewed by Paige Mushaw
