Dear Colleague:

I am sending out this broadcast e-mail to get some help from our colleagues for a follow-up survey by the American Chiropractic Association (ACA) regarding actions of Aetna Insurance Company affecting the chiropractic profession. This survey can be very important to SOT doctors and it is important for our voice to be heard at the ACA. This survey may take a few moments of your time but it will be well-invested time.

Aetna Insurance Company and SOT

Aetna Insurance Company has had a long-standing policy "Coverage Policy Bulletin - Number: 0107," which lists sacro occipital technique as a chiropractic method of evaluation and treatment considered not a covered expense by Aetna because it is investigational and experimental. SOTO-USA has repeatedly contacted the American Chiropractic Association (ACA) about this situation and they are now conducting a survey relative to Aetna policies. For a history of SOTO-USA's actions with Aetna, click here.

The ACA is conducting a focused investigation into the practices of Aetna and what is viewed as their unnecessarily restrictive policies and the inconsistent application of those policies. Some of you recently completed an online ACA survey that allowed the ACA to gauge the problems you are experiencing with Aetna. The ACA is now ready to move to the next phase of their data gathering.

The ACA has been working to appeal Aetna's policies through the ERISA process. The ACA is optimistic about this ERISA approach and is now encouraging providers who have experienced similar difficulties to pursue ERISA appeals. To that end, we are "drilling down" with our questions with another short survey to gather the specific information we need to pursue an effective resolution of the problems caused by Aetna. That survey can be found here: ACA Survey - click here.

Please complete the survey by October 31st.

For those of you who assisted with the last survey, the ACA is very grateful for your help. The response was almost ten times their usual response rate. We encourage you to help the ACA further by completing the next phase of the survey and clicking the link above. For those just becoming involved with the process, please complete the survey as well and thank you for participating.

 What is "ERISA?"

The Employee Retirement Income Security Act (ERISA), a law passed by the U.S. Congress in 1974, sets standards for:
♦ Administering private employee health benefit plans ("plans"),
♦ Disclosing financial and other information to plan participants ("enrollees/beneficiaries"), and
♦ Processing of health claims

ERISA: Introduction to New Regulations (Apr 2004)

Sacro Occipital Technique Organization - USA is a non-profit, professional organization formed to promote the awareness, understanding and utilization of the Sacro Occipital Technique method of chiropractic as founded and developed by Dr. Major Bertrand DeJarnette.

The SOTO-USA family all looks forward to seeing you October 23-26th, for the 2008 Clinical Symposium in Dallas, Texas. It will be a great opportunity learn the essence of SOT or advance your SOT training with integrative classes in SOT, CMRT, and Cranial. For those interested in working with the dental profession treating TMD then this symposium will be leading the way. If you are unable to attend this year then please mark your calendar for October 22-25, 2009 in Las Vegas for our 10th Clinical Symposium.
