Documentary film screenings about the aftermath of the earthquake on March 11th of 2011 in Japan to be held at Colorado College. Co-sponsored by Consulate-General of Japan in Denver. "Fukushima Hula Girls:" After the disaster, Hula girls at a Hawaiian theme resort in Iwaki, Fukushima tried to overcome and re-build the resort as a first step towards reconstruction of the area. The story tells us how they faced life with power issues and other struggles until the re-opening of "Spa Resort Hawaiians." "Can You See Our Lights? First Festival after the Tsunami:" Japanese summer festivals serve as a time to hold memorial services for the souls of the departed. Although some of the many places devastated by the disaster were unable to hold their colorful and passionate centuries-old festivals, the people of Rikuzen-Takada, Soma, Minami-Soma and some other cities decided to go ahead as usual. The program shows festival committee members busily repairing damaged floats and drums and encouraging the participation of dispersed former residents. What are the thoughts of the people holding these summer festivals? And what don't they hope to express in them? (719) 389-6607

The film is one of the most successful and critically acclaimed films by the legendary Japanese filmmaker Yasujiro Ozu. "Floating Weeds, drifting down the leisurely river of our lives," has long been a favored metaphor in Japanese prose and poetry and, in this 1934 film, it refers to a group of traveling actors who seem to be drifting aimlessly, carried by currents beyond their control. The film comes to life with Alex de Grassi's original acoustic guitar score based on a pentatonic blues motif that also suggests the sound of the koto, a Japanese harp-like instrument.
