CDBF 2013

News from the Colorado Dragon Boat Festival

January 28, 2013

Welcome!
Erin Yoshimura, CDBF Executive Director

Dear CDBF Community-

It's 2013, and we're deep into planning the best Colorado Dragon Boat Festival yet for July 27-28 at Sloan's Lake Park

I hope you had a wonderful Holiday Season, and a great New Year's. And of course, here's to a great Lunar New Year season, when so many Asian communities celebrate their traditional start of the new year. On February 10th, the Year of the [water] Snake begins so it's time for shedding and renewal!

There's a lot going on in CDBF-land, including the launch of all our application forms for the 2013 festival.

Race Team registration opens Friday, Feb. 1.

Marketplace and Taste of Asia vendor applications begin on Monday, Feb. 4

Performing Arts, Cultural Unity, Band Stage and Gateway to Asia performance and martial arts stage applications begin on Feb 4.

We're also already accepting creative submissions for the 2013 Image Contest. The winner's artwork will appear on our promotional poster or merchandise, so start thinking now about how to celebrate CDBF, our 2013 theme of Health and Fitness...a great fit for shedding and renewal.

Speaking of which, some "Chinese New Year" celebrations have already been held, but there are plenty still to come. You can see how many Asian and Asian American Pacific Islander organizations in the area celebrate the Lunar New Year in our always-updated calendar of events, and the list at the bottom of this newsletter.

One more thing: we'd like to personally thank Walmart for their $1,000 donation to CDBF! See the photo below for the big check that I was handed at a store opening at the new Lakeside location!

Thanks so much for your continuing support for the festival,

Erin Yoshimura

Executive Director

179 Days until the 13th Anuual CDBF!

Ready, Set, Signup Your 2013 Race Team!
cdbf race2012It's that time of the year, when race teams register for the Colorado Dragon Boat Festival's competition.

If you've never paddled (it's paddling, not rowing) in a dragon boat, it's about the most exciting time you can imagine. It's a whirlwind of effort, exertion and excitement, with your teammates all synchronized to maximize the energy efficiency to reach the finish line first.

We have both recreational and competitive divisions (for the truly serious boat racers and traveling teams). The recreation teams race Taiwan-style boats where a flag catcher perches on the dragon's head to snatch the winning flag out of the water. We also have a Youth Division (ages 13-17)  Competitive teams race sleeker, faster Hong Kong-style boats. The registration for both divisions begins this FRIDAY, FEB. 1.

You'll want to register your team right away, especially for the Recreational division, because the Taiwan-style boats are very popular!

Marketplace, Taste of Asia applications open Feb. 4!

2012 CDBF Taste of AsiaFast on the heels of the Race Team registrations, we'll start to accept Marketplace and Taste of Asia vendor applications for the 13th Annual Colorado Dragon Boat Festival on Monday, Feb. 4

That means if you create or sell arts and crafts, Asian or Asian-related products, offers services, represent a non-profit organization, or are a restaurant, caterer, food provider or a church or organization that offers food (especially Asian cuisine), you can come visit the CDBF website starting next Monday and click to the
Marketplace or Taste of Asia sections.

Decisions are made by committees, and emphasis is placed on CDBF's mission to support and celebrate Asian and Asian American communities and culture.
Calling All Performers! Applications Open 2/4
2012 CDBF Performing ArtsApplications for our FIVE performing arts stages also open next Monday, Feb. 4.

Yes, we have five separate stages you can perform on: Main Stage, Gateway to Asia, Gateway to Asia Martial Arts Stage, Cultural Unity Hip-Hop Showcase, and the new Band Stage we debuted last year.

Whether you're a performer of authentic traditional Asian culture or an Asian American who performs contemporary American culture like blues, rock or hip-hop, CDBF has a stage where you can display your talents.

Check out the various stages on our website, and come back starting next Monday to submit your application!
Your design could be on the 2013 CDBF Poster!
