Bitter Sweet Autumn

This has been such a beautiful start to the autumn season. With exception of these last few days, the weather has been temperate and even unseasonably warm. Glorious fall colors inspire us to showcase our colors and style as well. The beauty of Nature reminds us to celebrate the natural beauty that is ours by birthright. In this issue we look at twists in what's trending and catch you up on our antics at the Antic. We salute a young man's great good fortune and our own bittersweet fortune in the misfortune. I'm inviting readers out to support the Reel Sisters Festival and commemorating the public birth of my perfume baby and the passing of an old friend. Fall can make you both thoughtful and thankful.

Atlantic Antic

AE @Atlantic Antic

This year's Atlantic Antic is reported to have had over 2 million attendees!  And let me tell you, we had an absolute blast this year!  Our booth was set up right in front of the salon.  We had DJ Hard Hittin' Harry spinning hot beats and we had a crowd that just wouldn't wait and couldn't help but bop to the beat.  And to my great delight Anu Essentials products were well received and sales were brisk.  They loved the make overs we did on models like Keshia using the Anu Essentials product line. All of our models were lovely and if you'd like to see more pictures from that day, click here.

$65,000 Rock Found on Beach

A young boy walking along the beach came across a rock that turned out to be worth approximately $65,000.00.  It was real ambergris.  If you saw some ambergris laying on the beach would you recognize this treasure?   It is an essentials ingredient in one of my perfumes. Can you guess which one?  Read more

Healthy Hair Affair

Last month we were a sponsor at the Healthy Hair Affair in Washington, DC and it was such a lovely experience.  It was the first time this event took place and I was really impressed. I did not expect to see so many beautiful heads of healthy natural hair.  And it was the first time that we had presented the Anu Essentials line of natural hair care product publicly and it was very well received.  Sisters are interested in in knowing how to properly take care of their hair.   See the pics that I took on the KK FB album.  The beautiful sister above is Cipriana of UrbanBushBabes. Cipriana moderated the panel I was on and yes, that is all her real hair!  Amazing!!!

A Renewed Trend In Extra Long Braids
Solange
Have you noticed that there is a new trend in very long braid and twist styles? I don't know why it surprised

me to see this trend, but there is a downside to this eye-catching style.  But here's the skinny on this

I Fooled You!
AE @ KK

As you might imagine, I was overjoyed to finally display my line of Anu Essentials Natural Perfumes at the salon!  It's been a labor of love to learn this craft and create my line.  I am very proud to finally have them available.  I have them set up in the salon now, so please take the time to stop and "smell the roses," so to speak.  There are perfume strips available for you to sample the different scents, or feel free to spritz a little right on your wrist.  Wait a few moments to see how the scent changes and evolves on your skin.

When I found the perfect display unit made of mirrors, I was very excited and I set everything up just so, using some accent pieces of Vaseline glass that I used to collect.  But something told me to fill the display boxes with empty bottles.  I am glad I listened to my inner voice, because one of the boxes went missing.  In other words it was stolen!  I guess that's what is called a crime of opportunity.   It saddened me that someone would actually steal a box of my perfume...  But in this world, it takes all kinds.  For the other 99.9% of our clients, I wish you wonderfully fragrant moments.

Ollie is Gone
1945-2012

Some of you may remember that when we were in TriBeCa we had a Nail Tech, who later became a Loctician with us, named Ollie Calvin.  Ollie was a sweet and generous spirit whom everyone loved.  Ollie recently made her transition.  We will miss her, but will always remember her beautiful spirit, her sweet laugh and talented hands.  If you would like to attend the memorial for Ollie, it will be held on her birthday October 17th at the National Black Theater from 6 pm -9 pm.  That is at 5th Avenue bet. 125th & 126th Streets in Harlem, NY.

Reel Sisters

I'm excited to announce that the Reel Sisters of the Diaspora Film Festival returns this weekend. This year the Festival celebrates its 15th anniversary with a great lineup of programming. There are narratives, docs, features and shorts, an editing workshop with the editor of Eyes on the Prize, a chat with Daphne Maxwell Reid, the Brooklyn debut of Soul Food Junkies. It all ends with an award ceremony hosted by Terrie Williams, entertainment by vocalist Imani Uzuri, poetry by youth troupe Swag and steelpan music by the amazing CASYM. Come out and enjoy the festivities and support women filmmakers.
