Historical Society in new home

by John Imbler, interim executive director

The Disciples of Christ Historical Society is now fully moved into its new facilities. It is located in historic Bethany (WV) adjacent to the grounds of the Alexander Campbell study and mansion and across the street from the Campbell cemetery. The building was completed by renovating the Renner Visitors Center and adding an extensive archives room housing artifacts, portraits, institutional records, books, and journals from the early nineteenth century restoration movement to the present. A reading room, study carrels, and conference room provide welcoming, comfortable space for research and meetings. Of special note is the Peter and Lynne Morgan Gathering Place, an outdoor hospitality area for receptions, conversations, and relaxation.

To celebrate this settlement, a building dedication and blessing will be held on Saturday, Sept. 10, at 2:00 pm, EDT. Friends of the Society from the three streams of the movement will be gathered to join in celebration of this historical event. Those unable to attend in person can participate by viewing the service at Read more

From Refugee & Immigration Ministries of Disciples Home Missions
by Sharon Stanley-Rea, director

Ahead of the upcoming U.N. and president's summits Sept. 19 and 20, there is something simple all people of faith can do to help refugees around the world. Disciples Refugee & Immigration Ministries invites you to consider downloading or signing an electronic
postcard of support before Sept. 12 to increase humanitarian aid, support refugee resettlement, and improve opportunities for work and education for refugees.

In addition to signing on electronically, you can also print off your own postcards to have people sign at your church or at other events. You can also share the electronic postcard with friends.  All hard copy postcards should be mailed back to the address on the card. Please contact Disciples Refugee & Immigration Ministries, Rev. Sharon Stanley-Rea: [email protected]
or 202-957-7826 with questions or concerns.

Election eve prayer service
As the elections for a new President and other political leaders approach, Christians in this country are more concerned with the cultural implications of the election and its consequences, which can damage relationship beyond repair.

The Council on Christian Unity of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) believes that Christians still can get together at the places of prayer as one body of Christ no matter what kind of political opinions we hold as citizens. In order to help you organize an ecumenical prayer service for election eve/day, Rev. Kara Markell, Lake Washington Christian Church, Kirkland, WA, has created a liturgy for an Ecumenical Prayer Service for Election Eve/Day.
