Preparation is key for disasters
by Rev. Caroline Hamilton-Arnold, Week of Compassion
Natural disasters and damaging storms are the expected unexpected-though we know they happen with frequency and regularity, we rarely imagine we will be the ones in the path of the storm. To responsibly care for our families and communities, though, we should be anticipating likely disasters and preparing for potential damage. Week of Compassion urges Disciples: consider what storms or natural disasters are common in your area and make a safety plan with your family. Information While the Atlantic hurricane season officially started on June 1, August through October are the peak months. Already this year, tropical storms Bonnie and Colin have caused tens of thousands of dollars of damage. After an unusually wet spring in much of the southeast and along the gulf coast, this hurricane season could have high impact. Below is a short video released by FEMA reminding about safety measures before, during, and after a hurricane or tropical storm. If your area is affected by a tropical storm, hurricane, or other natural disaster, Week of Compassion is here to offer support. Contact Associate Director Rev. In addition to prayer and pastoral presence, we can provide connections to volunteer networks and FEMA representatives and financial resources for individuals and congregations. |
