Miami congregation goes to Cuba
submitted by Rev. Vilson Hurtado
Members of the Christian Church Disciples of Christ in Miami traveled to Cuba in late July. They ministered to individuals as well as brought gifts to a local church.
"Marlene, an elder of the congregation, has been one of the few privileged foreign Hispanics to pray for Juan. His family took him out of his house, made of sheets of wood, cardboard and without floors because he could not resist the 100 degrees inside. Juan, covered with towels and a plastic bag, suffering dementia is in need of total care. He resides in Purilimpia, a neighborhood where its inhabitants walk long dusty streets 3 times daily to get water. Forgotten by the state and no right to collect food, Juan and his family live at the mercy of the rain hoping their beds not get wet and the hot sun. On the other spectrum 3 kilometers away the sun is enjoyed alongside Varadero beach, full of foreigners, whom are wealthy ready to enjoy the country detained in half past a century." Answering the call
by Krystal Jacobs
God calls those to serve his Kingdom from all walks of life. In the past, you would have had to wait for a window of opportunity to allow you time to travel for class, sufficient financial means, and/or fewer family obligations to allow you to fulfill your call to ministry.
Mid-America Center for Ministry (CFM) recognizes the need for accessible ministry education and opens wide the window of opportunity, allowing busy people from all over the world to take quality, relevant, online ministry education courses. Time previously dedicated to travel, is now time students can do coursework. The online courses in the Certificate in Pastoral Ministry program allow students to complete assignments on a schedule that fits their needs - after work, between soccer games, and even in the middle of the night, anywhere they have internet access.
Offering the courses online also allows CFM to contract with the most experienced and qualified instructors who are leaders in their field. Currently we have instructors in nine states and students from 33 states and Canada.
CFM has plans to offer on-site event offerings in the future that will be recorded to allow more persons to participate from the comfort of their own home, church office, Sunday school group, or wherever most convenient.
