Northeastern Region celebrates Haitian members' accomplishments
Photo, story contributed by Rev. Mary Ann Glover, regional minister

History in the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), particularly Northeastern Region, was made at this Regional Assembly. Seven Haitians (three pastors) completed the three-year education process which will lead to their obtaining standing in the Northeastern Region. The three years of study covered the 16 areas of competency required by the Commission on the Ministry. This is the first group of Haitian pastors in the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) to complete this process and involved many hours of painstaking translation in monthly classes.

DCHS relocates to new home in Bethany, WV
by Rev. John Imbler, interim executive director

The Disciples of Christ Historical Society has just completed its move from Nashville (TN) to Bethany (WV) adjacent to the historic Campbell study and mansion. Near the Old Meeting House and across the road from the Campbell cemetery, the area is steeped in the rich tradition of Alexander and Thomas Campbell as they engaged a new religious experiment on American soil. Bethany College has provided invaluable support to this project, and the community has been welcoming to its new resident.

Although construction of the facilities is in its final stages, the climate-controlled archives room was sufficiently outfitted with compactor shelving to receive 11 semi-trailer loads of books, papers, memorabilia, and artifacts representing four centuries of ministries and missions of the three streams of the Stone-Campbell movement. The finished complex will be ready for its dedication service on Saturday, Sept. 10 concluding with the Kirkpatrick Lecture by Dr. Newell Williams, president of Brite Divinity School, Fort Worth (TX), and communion in the Old Meeting House.

To help offset the costs of the move and construction, a capital campaign is underway which has already realized gifts and pledges from over 50 individuals and families. Notable among those is a $100,000 gift from the Irvin C. Chapman Foundation of Orange, CA. In order to participate, contributions or pledges can directed to Disciples of Christ Historical Society, PO Box 1986, Indianapolis, IN 46206.

Ecumenical dialogue with Roman Catholic partners continues in Canada
submitted by Rev. Dr. Robert Welsh

The Fourth Session of the Fifth Phase of the Disciples of Christ-Roman Catholic International Commission for Dialogue took place in Calgary, AB, Canada, from June 17-22, 2016. The general theme for the present phase of dialogue is "Christians Formed and Transformed by the Eucharist."   After an introductory meeting (Nashville, January 2014); the Commission approached the topics related to what it means to be "Formed by the Eucharist" discussing "The Structure of Liturgies among Catholics and Disciples" (Rome, June 2014) and "The Significance of Eucharistic Catechesis - 'Knowing by Doing' " (Bethany, WV, June 2015). The 2016 session approached topics related to "Christians Being Transformed by the Eucharist," focusing on the general theme "The Eucharist and Relationships within the Church." The overall goal of the dialogue, which started in 1977, is the full visible unity between the two communions. Read more

Georgia congregation to help host interfaith commemoration of 9/11
submitted by Rev. Dr. James Brewer Calvert

At 3 pm on Sunday, Sept. 11, a pot-luck, covered dish meal will bring together the citizens of Decatur, GA, and surrounding communities for the 15th Anniversary of the 9/11 tragedy that claimed over 3,000 lives and, in so many ways, changed the world as we know it. At 4:00 pm an interfaith service will focus on Remember, Reconcile, and Relate. A broad coalition of local citizens is planning this event, including Catholics, Jews, Muslims, and Protestants. Area musical groups have been invited to offer their voices.

Pastor James Brewer-Calvert is one of many people of faith who serve on the 15th Anniversary of 9/11 planning team. Brewer-Calvert said, "We are hoping for a solid turnout from our many neighbors from across the city. Our prayer is that this event will foster new relationships as well as provide room for us to grieve and remember those who gave their lives - the police, firefighters, and EMTs who went into danger so that others could get out to safety. We are intentional about being interfaith and multicultural because people from all walks either died on 9/11 or have been affected. We are all implicated; we all suffer; and more than ever we need one another for healing and moving forward with grace."
