By Rev. Howard Ullery
Relationships are fundamental in life; all life is connected. At the same time, conflict is natural. We have different perspectives, experiences and interests. Resolving conflicts and maintaining healthy relationships are a challenge in living. Recognizing these realities and responding to the need, the people of the Lacey Community Church, a dually aligned congregation of the Northwest Regional Christian Church, partner with the Dispute Resolution Center of Thurston County to help provide mediation services for people of our larger community.
Mediation in this context is an empowering process. Trained mediators facilitate conversations between people in conflict helping them to name critical issues, develop creative solutions and form effective agreements. Not all mediations are successful, but far more often, they provide mutually satisfying results that defuse tensions and enhance relationships.
The major contribution of the LCC congregation is providing use of our building for extensive mediator training and mediation sessions. Sharing our building is a way to encourage ministry that meets a need and makes life better for our neighbors. In the process, several members of the congregation have become mediators and all have gained insights about reconciling differences.
Unity and peace represent core values for the LCC congregation; in our understanding, these values are ingrained in our denominational identity and grounded in the gospel message. Reconciliation and restoration of relationship, then, are central to living in community and living in faith. Facilitating mediation is an expression of faithfulness and love which we are honored to share.

Former president of NBA passes away
Richard R. "Rick" Lance, former President of the National Benevolent Association of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), died on April 21, 2016. Lance served as NBA President from 1982 to 1996, succeeding William T. Gibble upon his retirement. By 1988, Lance had led the NBA to be recognized by The Non-Profit Times as one of the top charities in the United States. In his 14 years as NBA President, he led NBA growth from 42 to 82 care-giving facilities across the United States, and assets increased from $78 million to $305 million. "Rick was not a corner-office president," said Leon Whitney, former NBA CFO during Lance's tenure. "He cared about the people we were serving, as well as the local and nationwide staff who were helping him get the job done. He made us dream big, then plan big. He stretched us and made us grow." NAPAD opens search for executive
We invite applications for the position of Interim Executive Pastor (IEP) for North American Pacific/Asian Disciples (NAPAD) Ministries.
|
Well, look at that!
We have an app now, Disciples! Available in both the Apple store and Google Play (for Android users), you can download this handy tool either by going to http://disciples.org/app or searching for Disciples of Christ BlueBridge on either site (This may be more challenging since we are new to the stores and don't have a lot of reviews yet to move us up in the ranking.)
Not only will we be providing app-only content, but this will be invaluable to General Assembly participants next summer as we beef up the content for the event as it approaches.

National Pastor offers thoughts at retirement
By Rev. Dr. Huberto Pimentel
Pimentel's last day in the office at Disciples Center is Friday, April 29.
What lies behind me is rich, powerful, is a sown seed waiting to grow. All these experiences as National Pastor worked for good, because they were part of the will of God in character formation and discipline development. Approaching the retirement day is great, is mixed feelings, but also it is part of the life in ministry and call to be a servant. What is much better is what lies before me. It is a future, it is something promising, and I am eager to embrace it. Read more
