Hal Watkins passes away
by the Watkins family

watkins portrait Dr, Harold R. Watkins, president emeritus of Board of Church Extension (now known as Disciples Church Extension Fund) died on Dec. 2.

A graduate of Bethany College, Bethany, WV and College of the Bible (now Lexington Theological Seminary), Lexington, KY, Hal began his career serving as organizing pastor of Park Avenue Christian Church, Tucson, AZ, followed by a pastorate at First Christian Church, Tuscaloosa, AL. Board of Church Extension, the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) General Unit which assists Disciples congregations with capital planning and financing, recruited Hal to serve as a general representative with primary responsibility of new church beginning in January, 1958. The job required extensive travel, with Hal having visited nearly 200 congregations each year in his first 10 years of providing counsel and fund raising leadership. Hal served as Board of Church Extension's President from 1980 through March 1995 after serving in every executive position of the organization.

In his retirement, Watkins spent the 1996-97 and 1998-99 academic years as the director of field education at Lexington Theological Seminary and was the interim president of LTS for the 2001-02 academic year. He also was called upon to help coordinate the merger of Church Finance Council into the Office of General Minister and President in 2007-08. Read full story

Executive pastor of North American Pacific/Asian Disciples resigns
The North American Pacific/Asian Disciples Board has received the resignation of Rev. Jinsuk (John) Chun as executive pastor for North American Pacific/Asian Disciples, a position he has held both in interim and settled capacities for three years. His resignation was effective, Nov. 30, 2015 to allow Rev. Chun to spend more time with family and concentrate on improving his health.

Chun said, "I am so grateful that NAPAD provided me with abundant gifts and the opportunity to serve the church. I will never forget your love and I will keep it my whole life. I will always pray for NAPAD."

John Roh, moderator of the NAPAD board, stated, "The NAPAD family is sorry that John is leaving his position as executive pastor, but we have decided to accept his resignation and honor his will. We would like to thank him for his leadership and commitment to the NAPAD community, regional, and general church. We wish him the best in his next endeavor."

The NAPAD board is meeting December 10-12, 2015 in Oakland, CA. Sharon E. Watkins, General Minister and President will attend as usual, but will also be available to consult as is customary during executive leadership transitions per The Design of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ).

Advent Resources from the NBA
This resource page has been updated with a new meditation/call-and-response for the activist community. Particularly in light of the recent (and repeated) instances of tragic violence, this is a powerful piece, written by Angela Whitenhill, therapist, minister, and convener of the Mental Health and Congregational Care Affinity Group research and design team - she also provides a voice recording presenting the text as spoken word. Additional materials will appear next week.

Church uses domain name to draw unchurched
Building on the idea of blogger and pastor Cary Nieuwhof, First Christian Church of Colorado Springs recently bought the domain name www.christmasincoloradosprings.com and created a webpage aimed at those who might be skeptical of "church" or who have felt judged in the past and yet still long for some connection at Christmastime.

Senior Pastor Chuck Blaisdell notes that Advent and particularly Christmas Eve are the largest attendance for many congregations and that church members often don't know how to invite friends and co-workers to services without seeming pushy.  Being able to simply share this website  address can be a easy way to invite such folks, Blaisdell said.  Blaisdell further notes that  "The website re-directs to a page on the church's website that explicitly addresses folks who may think that the word 'church' means banal, bigoted, and boring. We say very directly that that is not so, that all are truly welcome, and that we understand that families come in all 'shapes and sizes.'"  Blaisdell also said that Nieuwhof's key point is that non-church people don't search for Christmas Eve activities by church, they search by location - hence the Colorado Springs reference in the website name. Blaisdell said that buying four different versions of the address cost $11 and it took about an hour to write the page that those addresses forward to.
