Winter Talk honors the season of winter. The harvest is long past and spring soon to come. Winter is a time to think, tell stories, and eat. Winter Talk is a moment to come together as community and talk, eat, create new relationships, and then talk some more, eat some more, and come to know our new relations.

The event is a three day conversation on the Christian Doctrine of Discovery (DOD) and its influence on Christian theology and polity, with an emphasis on the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) relationship with Indigenous tribes and peoples. Hosted by Landscape Mending and Philips Theological Seminary, Winter Talk is dedicated to furthering the conversation on the Christian Doctrine of Discovery and its dismantling.

The keynote speaker for 2016 is Robert J. Miller of the Sandra Day O'Connor College of Law at Arizona State University.  His published works include articles, books and book chapters on a wide array of federal Indian law issues and civil procedure, and he speaks regularly on Indian law issues across the U.S. and in other countries. He is the author of Native America, Discovered and Conquered: Thomas Jefferson, Lewis and Clark, and Manifest Destiny (2006), and Reservation "Capitalism:" Economic Development in Indian Country (2012), and he co-authored Discovering Indigenous Lands: The Doctrine of Discovery in the English Colonies (Oxford University Press 2010). Global Ministries announces new Advent curriculum for children
by Tom Morse, executive of mission education
Ahlan wa Sahlan: Welcome! Advent Stories for Children
is a new curriculum designed to help children connect the Christmas stories in the Bible to real children who live in those places today. In this material you will visit Nazareth, Ein Karem, Bethlehem, and Beit Sahour and meet Nagham, John, Ronza, and Marianne-- four children who live in the cities where the Nativity story takes place. See how they find meaning in the stories from the Bible that happened in their hometowns!

Each city features a lesson containing a letter from a child in that city as well as a craft and activity, and can be implemented in a variety of ways such as in Sunday school, children's church programs, or a special Advent children's event. Connect your children to Global Ministries' Middle East Initiative and help them understand how their faith is connected to real people and real places in the world today. The Bible stories are explained in their historical context and encourage children to consider what those stories mean for them.

Through personal stories, the message of Advent and the promise of hope, peace, joy and love found in Jesus' birth is conveyed in new and meaningful ways. Get your free copy
