Disciples of Christ Historical Society breaks ground for new archive
DCHS board with shovels

On Friday, Oct. 2, the board of the Disciples of Christ Historical Society celebrated new beginnings in a historic place. With the groundbreaking for a new archive facility, complete with greetings from Hal and Evelyn Watkins, DCHS is on its way for a planned fall 2016 opening of the facility. For those familiar with Disciples history, Bethany College is a touchstone of the Stone-Campbell Movement. Founded in 1840 by Alexander Campbell for "the instruction of youth in the various branches of science and literature, the useful arts and the learned and foreign language," as laid out in the original charter, Bethany is celebrating 175 years of academic pursuits. It is located in West Virginia adjacent to the Campbell Mansion.

Now in the 21st century, Bethany College is celebrating two moves of historical importance. The archives of the
Disciples of Christ Historical Society will be moved there and the college has just named a long-time Disciple as its 20th president.
President Elect Tamara Rodenburg said, "On the eve of this historic 175th anniversary, I am honored to join Bethany College. As Bethany becomes the new home of the Disciples of Christ Historical Society, we lift up the wisdom of the past as we face the challenges of our common future. Value based leadership and transforming dialogue requires critical and reflective thinking -persons educated in the various branches of science, literature, arts, history, philosophies and religious traditions. We are being called, once again, to be a society of the learned conversant across disciplines and languages for the sake of transforming the world."

Housewarming party, but not for my house, please!

This summer I bought a new home in the city - it was everything that I dreamed of - bigger than I could imagine coming from a one bedroom apartment in the suburbs. The purchase embodied responsibility - it was a real adult, life-changing choice. But moving in proved to be t
he tough part. Like other new homeowners, I grappled with my old furniture not fitting in quite right, dishes breaking, and installing new shelving. As I worked through each of these issues, I thought about all of the people who didn't have old furniture or dishes, people who came without possessions to this country and to this city. While I was struggling with coat closets, others struggled with not owning coats.

So when it came to throwing a housewarming party, I suggested to my guests that they bring housewarming gifts to the incoming refugees and asylum-seekers in this country. "Let's help set up their home," I wrote on the e-vite. I gave provided lists of what they needed - bed kits with sheets and pillows; bath kits with towels and toiletries; school kits with backpacks and pens, glue and crayons. After I cooked and prepared drinks for the party, the guests arrived with huge bags from Target, TJ Maxx and other stores and as the party went on, the pile of things going to Disciples Refugee & Immigration Ministries grew. Rather than resentment for these long lists, many expressed thanks for the opportunity to help new Americans. For my friends, it was a quiet, positive action that showed their support for immigrants. The next day I packed my car to the gills with these gifts and took them to church. These items went to a family of nine from Syria when they arrived at our CWS refugee affiliate office in Lancaster, PA.

My friends and I marveled at the generosity and kindness that we can generate when we work together.  I invite you also to consider having a housewarming party (even if you didn't just move!) to help raise funds or collect items for incoming refugees and asylum-seekers from   around the world.

Mental Health and Congregational Care: NBA responds to the call for welcome and support
by Rev. Monica Wedlock Kilpatrick, Director of the Disciples Care Exchange and NBA Affinity Group Ministries

As the health and social service ministry of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), the National Benevolent Association (NBA) takes seriously its call to create communities of compassion and care. In doing so, the NBA has been called to engage in dialogue and action centered on the issue of Mental Health and Congregational Care. In an effort to open up this dialogue, and in response to the passing of GA-1523 "Becoming A People of Welcome and Support to People with Mental Illness and/or Mental Health Issues" by the 2015 General Assembly, the NBA has called together a research and design team tasked with structuring a Mental Health and Congregational Care Affinity Group, to launch in early 2016. Read more

Alexander Campbell also spoke to US Congress

While not an official joint session of Congress like the recent papal visit, President of Brite Divinity School Newell Williams shared this nugget he found in research prompted by Rev. Kevin Bowers' Facebook post. In the second volume of Robert Richardson's Memoirs of Alexander Campbell, p. 587-588, you will find -

"In the later part of May, 1850. . .he received a pressing invitation from both Houses of Congress to deliver to them an address in the Capitol on the 2nd of June.  Being introduced into the House of Representatives by Mr. Phelps of Missouri, he found it full to overflowing, and after a hymn and prayer, addressed the assembly from John 3:17, exhibiting the divine philanthropy in contrast with patriotism and human friendship, reasoning in a grand and masterly manner from creation, providence, divine legislation and human redemption, and holding the audience in the most fixed attention. . .an hour and a half."

Careful readers will also note that John 3:17 is part of the scriptural references we are using for the current Mission First! pilot project. For more about Mission First! go to missionfirst.disciples.org
