David Kagiwada: a legacy of reconciliation and peace
by Lynette Li, NAPAD director of communications and transformation ministries

David Kagiwada The Rev. David Kagiwada, a Japanese-American minister, was one of the founders of the North American Pacific/Asian Disciples of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ). NAPAD celebrated David Kagiwada Sunday on Sept. 13, 2015. This year marks the 30th anniversary of Kagiwada's passing. Kagiwada was known as a strong advocate for racial justice, reconciliation and Christian unity, fundamental values that undergird NAPAD's ministry to this day. He served congregations in California and Indiana.

Rev. Sylvia Mills worked alongside Kagiwada while he ministered at a congregation in Indiana. In her recent sermon at Westview Christian Church, Indianapolis, Mills shared the deep compassion and affirmation for all that sustained Kagiwada's ministry. She challenged for all to embody the welcome Kagiwada had for all. Another minister, Rev. John Mansell, recalled having Kagiwada as his senior minister. He told of an occasion when Kagiwada publically spoke up for a teenager who was condemned by their local community. Mansell was deeply impacted by how Kagiwada responded in such integrity and courage. This measure of integrity and courage was consistent in how Kagiwada ministered and advocated for racial reconciliation.

Following his death, NAPAD established a scholarship fund in his memory to support NAPAD seminarians. Kagiwada scholars contribute significantly towards the life of our church and have continued his legacy of advocating for reconciliation and justice.(See some of their reflections.)
