Washington Avenue Christian Church of Elyria, OH, , the largest financial supporter in Ohio of the church's general mission funding system, received the James P. Johnson Stewardship Award July 21 from the Christian Church Foundation.

Foundation Vice President Darwin Collins said the church has consistently demonstrated through the years its commitment and passion for linking stewardship and mission. "Under the exemplary leadership of their pastor for the past 30 years, the Rev. Dr. Janet Long, this congregation in the Rust Belt has been anything but declining. Since 1985 when Dr. Long arrived, this congregation has nearly tripled its budget, increased its permanent funds invested with the Foundation to over $1.6 million and the church has raised more than $2.2 million in capital and debt reductions."

The award, named in honor of Foundation President Emeritus James P. Johnson, recognizes a congregation at each General Assembly. It is the sixth congregation to be recognized for exemplary efforts in stewardship and outreach.

"Numbers alone cannot illustrate the passion of this church to fulfill Christ's call to care for the marginalized within their community and world," Collins said. "The Washington Ave congregation demonstrates in many ways their commitment to be generous in the service of Christ...from the building of Habitat for Humanity homes, to donating thousands of dollars and volunteer time to the Cleveland Christian Home, to becoming a Circle of Caring congregation with the Week of Compassion, to tithing their debt reduction campaigns toward major gifts for the capital needs of ministries beyond their doorsteps, to shopping carts filled to overflowing in support of local ministries.

The Rev. Dr. Janet Long received the award on behalf of the congregation. More than 30 church members attended the Foundation banquet honoring the church.

Learning communities wind up
Administration DOC Talk included pastors and general ministry staff.

From the Sunday workshops and core lectures on Sunday to the DOC Talks on Monday and then workshops Tuesday and Wednesday, Disciples have been equipped to SOAR!

Wafa Goussous brought her experience from her work in the Middle East to the Global/Ecumenical community. Spencer Burke's work at The Hatchery in Los Angeles encouraged us to consider creating communities of common cause in new ways in his

core lecture on innovation. The Faith Formation community kicked off with an examination of personal faith formation as foundational to trusting God and sharing faith with others. Frank and Joyce Thomas led that sharing of their coaching experience and personal journeys. Administration as ministry was the theme for Phil Bergey's talk for those nuts-and-bolts workshops in the administration community. Miguel De La Torres started the examination of justice issues given his long history of work and study on justice issues.

Monday's DOC Talks were a new way of approaching the theological founding of the learning communities. In several different styles of presentation, Disciples responded to the thoughts of the core lecturers from a Disciple perspective. Generally, one person would lead off and two others would join in along with discussion among the community members.

Sunday's workshops were a collage of topics from veteran concerns to healing and stewardship to Ferguson. The workshops for learning communities were Tuesday and Wednesday morning and delved further into the new church movement, monetary and building concerns, a variety of justice issues, concerns of our brothers and sisters around the world as well as worship and spirituality.
